On the Survivor subreddit, Lex was asked during his "ask me anything": "Hi I have another question. What do you remember about the Sue Hawk quit? And do you know how CBS helped her "deal with it."?
    "
    This was the resposne:
"Oh god...this is a mine-field of a question and we could talk about this all night as well. I remember a LOT about it. That was a bad situation, and I really don't think Hatch meant anything by his actions...it really didn't seem that big a deal when it happened. But Sue's reaction...nearly a day later(!) was pretty bizarre. After she quit, she actually started reconsidering and wanted to change her mind and come back into the game. All of us still in the game got a late night visit from production who wanted to know if we would be okay with her coming back into the game, despite the fact that she had quit. (I think that the producers wanted Sue back in because she was a popular player.) Everyone on my tribe unanimously responded "FUCK NO.""

The tricky part for CBS, is that they never post-texted on screen, to say that Richard was innocent, and Sue was getting help. Someone else here said this too, and I agree. Now, after the "Dan" exploits, where they DID post-text on screen, they are now stuck when it comes to Richard. They'd have to own up to what they did, before they could invite him back. The part I don't agree with, is Jeff being the sole bad guy. NO decision on television is made or decided by one person, even if they ARE the executive producer. They all answer to a board of directors. Richard blames him, but I don't.

"A whole day later." Often the first response to sexual assault can be to brush it off and want to feel it didn't hurt you and then later feel awful about it so "a whole day later" is a dopey thing to say. Richard was naked he said "want some of this sweetheart" he waggled. He admits that he was naked to intimidate other players in the game. I actually love Hatch as a character on Survivor and a well spoken individual but all of the things I just mentioned are bad. I don't think Richard purposely rubbed against her but writing off Sue's experience even while accepting she's unstable is also probably wrong. I think we and Survivor production recognise now that being naked to intimidate other players is a form of sexual harassment. But Richard never realised that at the time and the producers didn't realise that. Probst saying Richard shouldn't be on a family show because he's a nudist is complete and utter bullshit though since all they had to do is say "no nudity this time." Done.

  • @seal3081
    @seal3081 Před rokem +21

Dude why are you naked on the show in the first place? Just because the producers allowed it on the show doesn't mean it's ok. Ya live ur own life, u don't have to be like everyone else, but the others have to be around you on the show and don't want to see your junk. Just because you are gay doesn't mean you can't sexually assault a woman, just being naked is harrasement. You twist your words to make yourself a victim.

100% he outright said on the show that he used nudity to intimidate other players. He made weird creepy comments to Sue during that challenge. Did he intentionally molest her? No. But he's not some blushing virgin here.

      @gurutruecrimeguru1405 Před 4 lety +38

She says "Oooh that's gross" not gross pervert. And then Probst says "Come on no one cares about that." I guess comments intended as humour really got to her. That's what you said originally Richard that you thought she was tough as nails and could handle a joke and then she got sensitive but you aren't remembering what you said on a TV interview. And the whole using nudity to intimidate unfortunately actually crosses the line. That wasn't understood at that time though although maybe it should have been.

Clearly cbs producers and lawyers had to investigate these claims. And ultimately no charges where filed and invited him back twice and very likely invited him back for season40. He was not found guilty in courtof this or no one else from all stars have yet to say any such incident happened and yet he was not in season 40.

While i agree doing this in a regular everyday setting would be harrasment, Survivor is not a normal everyday setting.
There ia a ton of emotional toll that comes from Survivor on all facets and people need counseling after being on the show. The show was never meant to be sunshine and lollipops, there are rules and Richard using his nudity wasnt agaisnt the rules. People do a lot of things on Survivor that wouldn't be tolerated in eveyday life, and things are ginna happen on the island that cause trauma, but you cant blame Rich becauee he was using an advantage that was afforded to him. Calling what he did harassment is very unfair as he only did it as a tactic in a challenge to someone who initiated contact with him. Sue and anyone else who would be uncomfortable by Richs nudity had every opportunity to get away from him and not be close.

He’s really out here trying to win us over while admitting he used his fat nakedness as a tool. That’s harassment and the show shouldn’t have let it happen- but he did that. He used his own body as a weapon in the game- it wasn’t sexual and it didn’t have to be. It was WEIRD and inappropriate.
This was my comment. Definitely didn’t think the actual guy was here. You’re a real character and a fast talker, but you need to learn to apologize. You have to take accountability for your part or real people in your life are just gonna be like, “Uh-huh. You’re right. You still got lunch?”
Maybe you want a bunch of meek fools and moochers you can manipulate in your life. Your energy is _perfect_ for the game, but not so primed for insight or enlightenment.
The second you admit your faults in this, I am just one person who means nothing but I would respect you for it. I 💯 agree Sue blew the sexual aspect of it way out of proportion, but that does not excuse your actions. Even if CBS allowed it, you still did it and you still see nothing wrong with pointing the finger at _everyone but yourself._
I see through that. I think a lot of people do. I really think you should swallow your pride on this one before you choke on it.
And just FYI, I’ve always liked you better than Sue. I’m not taking any sides. If you can dish out criticism, you should be able to take it.
Bottom line: You admit to being naked to make people feel uncomfortable. That’s harassment, not strategy, and I don’t care WHO said it was okay.

At the end of that All Stars episode they should have had text on the screen like with the Dan incident, “Producers carefully analysed footage from the challenge and determined that Richard did not make any contact with Sue. Our professional psychologists are continuing to assist Sue with any trauma experienced.” Because they portrayed Richard as sexually assaulting Sue, they’re now stuck in a position where they can’t invite him back after the Dan situation. If they bring him back they either have to face the backlash from the #metoo crowd or admit they crafted an untrue narrative years ago. So unfortunately Richard and the fans suffered.

I also find it funny that you find the notion of him preserving his bodily autonomy to be a "weapon." Even after doing this, she STILL approached him. I think it's a pretty warranted concern speaking it ACTUALLY did occur to him? It validates why he took this precaution to begin with...

Secondly, you look great!!!! I honestly laughed (well more like chuckled) when you said that you never had no interest in sexually touching a woman, I totally get it, I myself am gay and have no interest in woman like that, so I found it more humorous than anything. Also after rewatching the episode during the challenge, what was Sue yelling right before the incident happened, it sounded like something baby??? I also feel like had this incident with Sue Hawk been such a big deal it would have been covered/talked about the live reunion. I'm extremely disappointed in production that you will not be on this season of Survivor due to the incident with Dan last season- I think this a poor excuse not to have one of the all the greatest winners be on an all winners season- I mean let's face it, you set the precedence of how to play and win Survivor- that it's not an olympic game, it's about numbers (an alliance) and strategy. There's no comparison between the All Stars situation and what Dan did last season, at least in my mind.

I'm inclined to believe this, because it's not a question that execs in corporate media will happily throw anyone under the bus to make a buck, and if Sue did seek legal action and lawyers were involved, I'm not sure that you'd really be able to really get away with lying about the incident. I have to ask though, if CBS knew there WAS no instance of sexual assault, and perpetuated it anyway, is there a case to be made for slander?

CBS received a lot of criticism for not intervening in all the Dan/Kellee situation earlier when they could and now they would ignore all of that and bring back a guy that rubbed his genitals against another contestant... yeah, sure way to go CBS!

Nowadays it is easy to be connected with other players post show and also connected to the Staff like producers. Back then it was not that uncommon that once the contestants went home they did not stay connected or communicated like they are now in 2020

Wow, Rich! I recently decided that watching every season of Survivor, from start to finish, would be my quarantine "project," after stumbling across an episode from season 21 during a night in at college. Before this, I knew of Survivor and had watched a season or two growing up, but that's about it. While my friends thought you were cocky, I knew from episode one that your intelligence, charisma, and strength would lead you to the very end. In other words, it was clear that you had a plan. I am currently on season ten, and a winner has yet to top your performance in my eyes. Additionally, very few players in general so far have seemed to express a true understanding of the game and the importance of both manipulation and staying in the majority. When the "incident" occurred on All Stars, I sympathized with Sue, and was bothered by what you did, but I didn't believe that you meant any harm or realized your actions would result in the effects that they did. Now, after watching this video, I feel terrible that any of that happened at all. I feel fortunate to have this new perspective of the way things went down, and I am so sorry that CBS has completely amplified and misrepresented the situation, publicly and wrongly dragging your name and reputation through the dirt. Many fans of Survivor, including myself, know that you were 100% taken advantage of by both Sue and CBS. So, just know, we are on your side. I hope to see you in the limelight again soon, and on the positive side of things, where you deserve to be.

This was my comment. Definitely didn’t think the actual guy was here. You’re a real character and a fast talker, but you need to learn to apologize. You have to take accountability for your part or real people in your life are just gonna be like, “Uh-huh. You’re right. You still got lunch?”

I 💯 agree Sue blew the sexual aspect of it way out of proportion, but that does not excuse your actions. Well said Richard....At some point in any successful business there is collateral damage, and that's where the lawyers waivers come into effect. The business of television is about ratings and advertising revenue...and writers and producers make decisions to keep the viewer engaged. So yes, they skew the show to create interest, curiosity and longevity. At the end of the day it's a huge business that employs so many people...provides big salaries and even bigger bonuses to the executives. Like many other businesses it's also about keeping the shareholder happy...and increasing the value of the company....because bonuses depend on it. It's not just the business of television. Every company with shareholders strategizes endlessly about the product they deliver with the sole purpose of increasing share value. Whether they sell television, oil, equipment or food, somebody in the process takes the hit down the line.
I believe you are good. They were wise to pick you in seasons past and you delivered well. Regardless of what the viewer thinks or knows, it would have been wise and entertaining (and perhaps even controversial) to include you in season 40.

I didn't watch the show back then, so I don't have any personal attachment to Sue or Rich, and I don't have any first- (or second-) hand knowledge on the situation. What I do have is a lot of experience both practical and through research with abusive behavior. I am very concerned by the comments here and the statements being made in the video.
The first thing I have to clarify, because apparently not enough people know it, is that sexual assault and harrassment is not about sex or attraction. It is about power. When a gay man in a bar "honked" my breast because he didn't think I should be there, that was sexual assault. When Rich decided to play the challenge nude, rubbed against another player, and then made a "joke" sexual in nature, that is at the very least sexual harassment. Self-admittedly his intent was to intimidate. THAT, not attraction, is exactly the psychology behind sexual assault and harassment.
The second thing I need to point out is how much gaslighting Rich is doing in this video. This isn't just explaining his side. It is an orchestrated attack on Sue's character to make her a less credible victim. Just the word unstable being used once was enough to be gaslighting, but he said it repeatedly in order to invalidate Sue's perspective.
Like I said, I have no personal stake in either of these people, but just based on this video alone, this man seems every bit a predator.

Sue was a horrible person to people on the show, just horrible and when that incident with her a rich happened she brushes it off and people laughed, no one took it seriously until sue very much over reacted later and it was a scary scene but because she was “sexually assaulted” but because she was angry about life and maybe things that had happened in her past, she mentioned numerous times that her husband would be upset, why? Cause she was assaulted I don’t think that was what she was getting at, she was worried about something. I don’t know her husband but I do know of husbands who have blamed their wives for things that are not their fault. I don’t know but sue seemed like a really toxic person before this incident, I wouldn’t want to be around her.

    • @xbluefish24x
      @xbluefish24x Před 4 lety +9

@@christinme23 That's very possible. It's entirely possible she was already in some sort of traumatic experience at home. Or not. Her being a negative force on the show doesn't really change what happened. Whether or not Rich pressed up against her, he did at the very least intentionally play nude in order to intimidate, and he made the lewd comment. Trauma is not something that is easy to gauge, and it's not something the brain can typically recognize while it's happening. Sue's 24-hr "delayed" reaction is completely normal. Some victims of sexual assault or harrassment don't process the event until weeks, months, or even years later.

Mac Attack Not the OP, but:
      1) It’s not an argument. It’s a fact. Sexual assault is about power, not sex. That’s why it is used as a weapon of war. It’s exerting power over another person and violating their sexual integrity. Every educated and informed academic and legal source will tell you the same.
      2) The legal definition.
      3) Again - using your sexual organs to intimate other people and make them uncomfortable is the very definition of a sexual offence.
      4) The very definition of gaslighting implies you are trying to make people doubt what they know. By trying to paint Sue as “unstable”, Richard is attempting to make her appear less worthy of respect, and human decency - thereby making her more deserving of being sexually harassed and assaulted. Alternatively, he wants people to believe it never happened.

Because I had seen comments talking about the incident. So I was like “let me go watch that season”

Head over here” and she was like “no, I want to go that way.” Which made no sense since Richard Hatch was already heading from that way.
Looking from a perspective from now, it’s clear that Richard Hatch should never had been naked, but Survivor never made that part of rules of a pressing issue, considering Hatch and others had done similar stuff in taking clothes off during challenges.
Only Sue know her true intentions, whether it was a way to get back at CBS, or get a pay day, or Sue actually felt affected by it.

Thank you for posting your very well articulated version of this unfortunate incident. In today's hyper sensitive times, and without discounting anyone's right to feel, we as a society have become way too quick to dismiss that intent does matter and that an actual truth exists. Without getting too far into the weeds on the season 39 situation, there was a five or six scene montage of Dan's touching which did indeed come across to me as creepy, especially when taking into account the context in which it was presented. However, I also came to the conclusion that same night that an editor with the amount of footage they have contestants could create similar montages for most people that have played the game using a collection of completely innocent interactions. Long time fans will remember the Ted and Ghandia incident from Survivor Thailand surrounding contact that occurred as a result of them sleeping next to each other. We were shown Dan draping an arm over a female contestant, etc during the night hours in that montage without being shown if he was even awake and aware of what he was doing. That seems like very reckless editing by CBS to me. I would assume with such close sleeping quarters and with contestants trying to keep each other warm similar interactions are more the norm than not. The early seasons of the show placed more of an emphasis on actual survival than they do now, so I don't really see the need to force contestants to freeze at night in close quarters. Do you have any suggestions for how sleeping arrangements should be handled in future seasons of the show? Perhaps there is enough discussion fodder here on the overall topic to warrant it's own video. My quick take is that although I like to see people tough it out it is probably time to give everyone their own blanket and provide enough materials to create a shelter with adequate space and waterproofing. Thanks for creating your channel and I wish I was watching you on the current season.
Last quick thought, people often dismiss your gameplay in season one as just having come up with the idea of an alliance. The true brilliance of your gameplay was to bring together a diverse collection of individuals morally AGAINST the idea of an alliance and keeping it strong to the end. In addition, the drop from the last immunity challenge was perfect and was light years ahead in strategy from what anyone else had come up with during the early seasons. Well played sir!

I just saw this episode for the first time. It's nice you have a platform to tell your story. You do have to realize YOUR actions upset her. If you hadn't taken your clothes off and went up on her and made a comment she wouldn't have reacted that way. I think you said "you want some of you this?" Or something like that.. even Jeff was disgusted and said come on guys. I get your intentions weren't bad but it offended her. I don't think most who are sexually assaulted say much in the moment but it eats them alive which is why she freaked out and quit. I get it. It was offensive. I get your side but you have to understand her side too. It was inappropriate & for the love of God, keep your shorts on lol

She could have just went around. She waited for Richard and put herself in that situation. Richard just reacted to her.

As for Sue’s FTC speech, I think she got too emotionally close to Kelly. I recall her saying something about a death of a female close to her (can’t remember if it was a family member or a friend), and I think she felt so betrayed by Kelly. I think she definitely was emotionally unstable, and I don’t know if it was responsible of producers to let her back on.

4 years after winners at war, and yeah. I think Richard has a great point about him being the scapegoat for CBS. If they really thought he was who the show portrayed him to be, then they wouldn't of ever even considered inviting him back.

Love you, God bless you! You have been will always be one of my very favorites. I have always believed in you and totally agree, we hear you! Reality does matter. We must remember at the end of the day the editing is in their hands and it is about how they can make money over the drama of all cast members. ❤️❤️❤️

  • @megakoopa-pokemonandmore6152

I think the reason you were cut was because of season 39. Now they have to take extra precautions because of all the things that happened. Also it now unfortunately might be because of the criminal record and I really hate to say it, again because of season 39

CBS has a disaster of a season and times have changed. They needed to play it safe for this season. It sucks we didn’t get to see Haych, but is the reality right now.

Hi Richard, sorry this might be irrelevant but have you made a video detailing how you guys live on the island in terms of hygiene. I'm so curious about whether you guys use deodorant and body lotion and lipbalm etc.

I just got done watching season 1 and you created survivor! If you had actually did something wrong I would hope that CBS would have never talked to you again. What they aired is purposely confusing. Even Jeff’s reaction to Sue is like “ she is making this up” best of luck to you !

I was kicked off of Survivor Reddit as well for expressing my own benign opinion. It’s a toxic echo chamber that does not allow for any disagreement. Deviate from their narrative, you get downvoted your oblivion or worse, shadowbanned where you can post, but no one can see it. They will reap what they sow in karma.
