JVC M70 Restoration and Bluetooth Mod

  • This is a JVC M70. So far I have restored 3 of them. This one came to me recently and it had no powering up issue. The radio had no sound, but the cassette reels spun when the buttons were pressed. It was a very strange and interesting condition.
    I started with troubleshooting a power failure issue. Checking from the power transformer, replacing a fuse, clean all switches with contact cleaner. At some point I tried playing music with AUX in, and the sound came out from the speakers. However, even the volume was set up to the max, it was so small sound. Anyway, after I cleaned up all switches and controllers, I found out that pressing cassette button would send power to the amp and radio sound was on. In this situation, when I turn ON the main power switch, the radio sound went off. Very interesting. So I guessed that cassette deck power switch is only working switch, and the main power switch had something to do with this power frailer mystery. After cleaning the power switch witch was "leaf type switch", this mysterious power failure issue disappeared.
    The next thing I found was that the cassette deck lost some parts. I ordered same cassette deck from Korea as a replacement. The arrived cassette deck's play/record head condition was really bad, so I used only necessary parts of it. After replacing parts and tested cassette deck, the auto stop feature did not work. So again, I replaced whole button mechanism. This time everything worked perfectly. In the film, I took apart cassette deck 2 times, however, to tell you the truth, I needed 5 times re-do for complete the cassette repair work. LOL.
    I like M70, it is well built and well balanced machine. Enjoy the film.

      Teddy takes lots of pictures before he disassembles these boomboxes as a helpful reference so once a repair/restore is done, it makes it easier for him to re-assemble them and ensure everything is in the right place, working correctly. He also makes notes as he goes; this is handy when a service manual isn't available.

      Your boombox has a power switch problem. Either function switch ( you select tape, radio, etc..) or main power switch. As you are now using the cassette deck button for the main power switch, that means power supply as well as amp board, radio tuner board are all OK. Probably easy fix.

      First clean the entire body with mild detergent, use goo gone to clean more detail. For the silver color plastic, you want to you a little bit of stainless cleaner along with goo gone. Do not use to much stainless cleaner otherwise you will remove surface painting. Clear plastic lens, glass clean with rubbing alcohol, then polish it with plastic cleaner. Any type of plastic cleaner will help you to clean it. If there is a scratches you need to use water sand to remove it first, then polish it with plastic cleaner.

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  Před 5 lety +1

      If you are talking about app I am using in the film to adjust the tape speed, it is called Tuner T1. I use A440 hz tape to adjust the speed. You need to create or buy any kind of tone adjustment tape. If you have a good speed tape deck, you can record A440 hz tone from youtube video. It does not have to be 440hz, any frequency test tape can be used with Tuner T1 app.

    Чудо аппарат - двухмоторная протяжка уровня кассетной деки среднего класса, мостовой усилитель мощности, НЧ динамики 20 см.

      You need to change the power input selection from USA mode to European mode. If it does not have such a selecting switch, then you can not use it as you said the difference of the voltage and hz cycle. If you set it to European mode, then still it is showing slow speed, then you need to check the motor run capacitor. Replacing it will bring your R2R speed to the normal.

      @teddyhashee  Před 4 lety +1

      Some type of the cassette deck has a hole in front of the motor and you can use tiny screw driver to adjust the motor speed. But most of the boombox, probably you need to open up the body in order to adjust the speed.

    • @RoughJustice2k18
      @RoughJustice2k18 Před 4 lety

      Some Sharp and Sony twin-cassette boomboxes have trim-pots on the board to adjust normal and/or high-speed; there are none on the back of the motor. Trim-pots on the back of the motor tend to be easier to adjust than those on a board as there is not much in the way but they are prone to drift when the temperature changes due to the motor spinning and creating heat which affects speed. Board trim-pots don't suffer this problem because they are generally further away from the motor.
      ** Back of the motor or on the board is where you should find some adjustment pot for tape speed, depending on the model. **

      I'd take the JVC PC-55 if we're talking a component system boombox. The one-piece boxes like this M70 are different, I personally prefer this style.

      Changing the belts is not so difficult, but removing all necessary parts from body in order to leach the cassette deck is a little bit of tricky thing.
