- Remember Wings nation, without Börje Salming... We would not have Nick Lidström, who had Börje as his rolemodel and the reason why he choose to start playing defence aswell as wear #5 (that Salming wore with the nationals) to begin with. Not only swedes in general owes Börje all the respect in the world, Detroit fans do to. Myself as a young kid, i started follow Red Wings hockey the last year Salming played here with us, my father was a huge Salming fan so it was just natural. A year or two later this Lidström kid followed Börje's fotsteps once again and made his rookie debut in Detroit and i was hooked for life on Red Wings hockey. Thank you for everything Börje, rest easy now... ❤️❤️❤️

Börje Salming, the King and Legend, what an amazing guy and player he was. He also opened the door to NHL for the Swedes and other European players. We miss you Börje and thank you for everything.
Class act by the Red Wings' broadcast crew.
Thanks for sharing. Last words I saw him type on his iPad, “I am thinking of all of you”. Great hockey player but a better human.
Great upload, thank you for this. I'm glad I'm able to rewatch this, and share it to others. As you've well stated in the description, he's an amazingly important person to the history of hockey. Mr. Salming was an amazing person, and as we know, it gave birth to another person in Nick Lidström.
There's always a need for people of legendary caliber and character, as they give rise to future generations of Legends. Börje Salming is bigger than a mountain in my mind.
Love this respect from some very classy gentlemen!
ken and mickey are class acts

@@tallesttreeintheforest Thanks
Thank you to the Red Wings commentators, from this Leafs fan. Salming was a great player who did put up with a lot of crap.
I can't help but notice how awkward Jimmy Howard looks the whole time John, Mickey and Ken were reminiscing about Borje.
That is so funny
👍😢🇸🇪
The infamous cut on Salming’s face came from the stick of New York Islander Lorne Henning not Paul MacLean.
And I've read it came in a 1986 game against Detroit, he was knocked down in front of the Leafs net and Gerard Gallant's skate cut his face and states "The injury required facial cosmetic surgery that involved more than 200 stitches". Where did it actually come from? lol
@@gonuts4donuts Börje actually said in an interview later that it was around 400 stitches, crazy... What a warrior, until the end. Nobody like him. I didn't even cry on my fathers funural that I loved dearly but have a hard time show emotions i guess... But I cried my eyes out about this the last few weeks, maybe cause we basically was watching a funural of a living person who wasn't really alive anymore in that sense. Huge loss for the hockey world.😭❣
The Islanders injury you mentioned happened in the playoffs in the mid-1970s. It didn't result in a significant amount of stitches, but it was a serious eye injury. So serious in fact, Börje lost partial vision in his right eye for life.
The skate cut was as mentioned above, from Gerard Gallant in 1986.
Gerard Gallant when he was playing with the Red Wings accidentally cut Borge's face when Borge was knocked down in front of the net resulting in 300 Stitches Nov 26 1986.
🏒💙🇸🇪
