Ηello, greetings from greece. Sorry to disappoint you, but here is the difference; your ancestors never forgot hinduism so you are contnuing true hinduism as your ancestors tought you. On the contrary, in greece the twelve gods died out 1000 years ago because nobody believed in them. The rituals were completely forgotten. The modern people that call themselves polytheists come from ancestors who have been christians for ages and don't remember anything of the old religion. They just reproduce what they see in movies and read in books.
You Indians have saved the reputation of Hellenism. Back some years, the Christian Orthodox Church wanted to turn Parthenon on Akropolis into a christian church. Indians from London England revolted and they shut down their hybris. Recently the Indian England's PM Sunac, refused to see the pseudogreek PM, Mitsotakes, to talk about the Parthenon marbles. Greece is a dominant christian state which supress indigenous, and speculate on our heritage. With love from Helllas.

Since ancient Greeks and Indians had trade relations, many of our philosophies have travelled between our civilizations. In all our scriptures, Greeks are referred to as "Yavana" (pronounced Yuh-vuh-nuh). Many of our astrological texts are ascribed to ancient Greek scholars.
And most interesting of all. When Alexander came to India, he is recorded to have visited a Krishna temple in Takshashila (Modern Pakistan) and after knowing about Krishna he is said to have identified Krishna as the Indian equivalent to Hercules (as far as I remember). And his army used to carry an Image of Krishna in front while marching to show solidarity.
It is quite common in India to draw parallels between our gods and Greek gods to students when we study greek history in schools.

I am a hellenic polytheist in Athens and I loved this video! There are some organisations but community is hard to find because our numbers are small and when you don't know who is of the same religion you don't know how to support the community. It is difficult to find like-minded people especially the younger generation to perform rituals and honor the gods. But it's not just the ritual part. A community is far more than one dimension. We don't have common spaces, we don't have some kind of hellenic portal, where we can find businesses for example to support, organise events of not just religious nature etc. Thank you for this video!

I have a thing for polytheism, it really has influenced me, especially Greece.
The main organizations in Greece for Hellenism have over 2000 members that was in a 2005 poll/census, but maybe as much as 100,000 so your community isn't small.Look up the YSEE and Labrys

A lot of Temples and sacred places were destroyed and churches were built on top of them. A lot of lore and ancient knowledge was lost. Some ancient traditions were preserved due to the fact that Christianity incorporated them so it could spread easier throughout Greece. That's why you see a lot of people here practising pagan traditions without them knowing. Norse, greek, slavic and all kinds or paganism in europe have the same core beliefs and are extremely similar. Also admitting that you practise paganism is a big no no. Can't wait for the next video!

I still feel kind of bad for these sacred places being destroyed by this annoying global rule of Christianity that I just can’t stand. I mean, I think Greece is a lot more better as a polytheistic nation than a monotheistic one, it’s made the people look kind of ridiculous. 🤔

As an Hellenistic polytheist in the US this video was for me a gift from the Gods, because you explore the breadth of polytheism and show that these ancient pagan religions were and are paths to self-knowledge and to opening up to other cultures, spiritualities, and life-ways! The ancient Greeks opened minds and hearts to knowledge, giving us philosophy and science and love of nature. Thank you for a wonderful lecture and may Odin continue to guide you on your path.

Wow, this video touched home. As a Greek and even though raised in Catholicism, I was taught early in childhood about the Greek Gods and to respect them because it's our heritage so Tragoe was quite right about how the people there perceive religion. I was definitely influenced by paganism early in life which is probably why Odin tapped me on the shoulder and put me on this path. Thank you for this wonderful video.
That's right, Deborah. Greeks are taught about the old gods from an early age, but just as an artefact of the past - not as something that's still alive today. Sadly.

I am not sure if this is still the case for other greeks but my People (Pontian greeks), have this tradition of honoring the death of someone close for 40 days (not being allowed to shave and other things) and we have a table in honor of the 40 days after their death with all their favourite foods. That comes from ancient Greece because they said that it took 40 days for a stick to reach Tartarus if you throw it from the surface of the earth
My roots are from Ikaria and Pontic as well and we have always been taught the 40 days is connected to the Bible with 40 being an important number like 40 days of fasting by Jesus. We’re supposed to wear black and not bake desserts either as it will show that you are celebrating and tempt “death” to come back and take another. I always knew the personification of death was totally Ancient Greek religion. Fascinating stuff I want to read so much more about the actual beliefs of the Ancient Greek polytheistic religion morals wise etc

We also hold a meal in the memory after 40 days in Eastern Europe, didnt know that's pagan thing tho... 😮 thought it had to do w the 40 days/years thing that appears in the Bible... the wandering in the dessert for 40 years of the Israelites, as well as Jesus' fasting for 40 days b4 being tempted by the devil & starting his ministry...
My parents are from the northern mountains in Greece so it’s nice to see you visiting one of the islands. My parents are Greek Orthodox but I was raised with lots of folk healing as well as my mother taught me dream interpretation & we were taught about the gods. So my roots have always been deep rooted paganism with a smatter of religion which was interesting.

This is by far one of my favorite videos you’ve done so far. I 100% agree that as followers of this faith and as followers of Odin it’s important to learn as much as you can from other cultures and belief systems. I would love to see more videos exploring paganism/polytheism from around the world, because at the end of the day we all have similar goals to honor the old ways and our ancestors and we have so much to learn from one another. I consider myself an Anamist. However, one of my favorite things about your videos and other practicing pagans is that we see commonality in one another. We all have the want to share and learn folklore and traditions even when it is not our own. My favorite video yet. Loved the addition of interview of someone with knowledge with a different pagan knowledge.

Secondly, thank you for bringing some awareness to greek paganism. Greek pagans have been trying for years to get official recognision from the state without success unfortunately.

@@Tragoe Greek state and the church are not separate in Greece so it is very hard to get recognition for pagan/old religions. Like stated in the video it is considered that you are a devil worshiper. Funny thing though we are still using Zeus's name in many sentences, good and bad. 😂 We still hold "pagan" rituals like banishing the evil eye, and still honour the sea and the mountains. We have a pagan story for every hill, nook and rock. Even the prayers that people use to wish good health or good luck usually have pagan origins.

I'm of the belief that pagans across the world worshipped a lot of the same deities but with different names. For instance, I think Thor and Zeus are one in the same, along with Freyja and Aphrodite, etc.

Love the music greeks are very religious and superstitious so I guess that they are a blend of Christian orthodox but have deep seated pagan beliefs and rituals too I grew up Greek Orthodox but always felt strongly towards paganism best wishes to all from Australia
I'd say that the younger generations of Greeks are not so religious, Gordo. Christian churches only have older people in them.

the awesome thing about hellenic religion is that if these folks took any dictionary on myth and rites and festivities - for every holiday there were many rites, and for those there was a festival, processions (people would walk in line for example with phalic shaped breads), athetic games, fair food to be eaten like focaccia breads, dancing - they would find out there are probably more than 500 ceremonies and festivities to do every year which took places in all of Hellas (old name for all thatg's Greece), if you take ALL the gods.
So the funny thing is that most Greek individuals even then "probably" used to worship only one god, depending on what god was needed or liked the most in that town/region they lived in, and ofc their life choices/careers, even though ofc the bigger cities like Athens (main divinity Athena ofc!) held other deities. For example Ephesus, or Crete, was absolutely ruled by the goddess, Artemis, being the site of the biggest temple, or Artemision. So mythology compendiates all gods, but adoration is a people's thing, and ppl can manage to "love" and adore one god during their lives. Infact, even tho if they attacked Ephesus the natural thing would be to pray to Athena, why would they, since Artemis is the main divinity? That's why some attributed warlike qualities to Artemis too, enhancing, updating her identity, making her more universal! Only difference is they knew one religion comprised many gods. Or did they? I mean what's the difference between saying many gods is one religion, and each of those is one religion?
Jacob, I know you do a lot on European paganism. However, have you ever done anything on paganism in Asia such as Japan, Korea, Laos, Cambodia, or even somewhere like China?
Some traditions say Odin is Hermes/Mercury and Thoth, he traveled the world teaching and learning about different peoples. The Corpus Hermeticum teaches more about this if you haven’t read it.

Is the same in Italy especially where I come from in Sardinia. All Catholic traditions are actually very pagan. We had letters from the pope in the 1700' sending people to try eliminate pagan customs. Herbal medicine is still strong and so many much as Imbolc and Beltane festivals, all with Catholic names and Saint linked to them. But yeah if you ask no one is pagan, the stigma is strong especially the one from organized religions regardless of which one.
Awesome video. I'm considering taking a one man holiday to Thessaloniki this summer, Any suggestions for things to do for a man with no knowledge of the Greek language but a burning passion for history, art, and hiking?
Stay near the White Tower in the bay. That is the main tourist area. Its safe, most people speak English and there is plenty to do. And its within walking distance of all the museums, train station, and boat tours. Walking up to the Acropolis was fun, but its like a 30 minute walk to the top of the hill, stunning views though. Id recommend staying out of the non-touristy sides. I never felt unsafe, but there were clear signs of heroine use everywhere, and I was approached by some less than favorable people.
Overall its very safe, just watch out for your normal scammers, if you don't look greek, they will target you quick. I had a Nigerian man sprint crossed the street to try to scam me. But it happens to everyone with street performers. When I was out with the other greeks they still came up, played music and asked for money. Nothing that I haven't see before but if you are not used to it can be awkward.
I found the majority of people to be very friendly if you get in a good conversation. Buying drinks/meals of others is a great way to make friends (and its cheap to do so).

The ancient archetypes come from Egypt as I understand. The heirophants spread across the world and taught different regions about the archetypes and the stars. These developed into their own forms such as Vedic and Hellenistic astrology, and others. I believe all religions come from what was the melting pot of ancient Egypt.

It's true that the word "pagan" makes one think of heathens , heretics or something "not good and pure". I follow the Elusinian Mysteries in my own private way b/c it was actually around for 2,000 yrs until 392 A.D. when Theodosius edicted Roman Christianity as the official religion of the Roman world. I don't see a problem with practicing both beliefs. After all, a lot of Christian rituals come from the practice of ancient traditions.

Why are the people of Hellas referred to as "Greeks," when there is no such thing? The people of that part of the world are known as Helliness, the country is officially known as Hellas, legally, embassies are Hellenic, passports denote as Hellas and in the United Nations as Hellas and the people acknowledge each other Hellinass/Hellinida; so why the deliberate persistence of the use of Greeks and Greece? Does this have something to do with the “Greek Orthodox Churches' deliberate attempt to suppress this identity with the ancient religion of Hellenism (Ἑλληνισμός)? Following this, if the Parthenon, the temple of Poseidon and most of the world-renowned heritages in Hellas, are in fact, temples of worship for the indigenous religion of Hellenism, are people permitted to officially worship there and hold religious ceremonies; if not, why not?

They're referred as Greeks because it comes from Latin...graecus, which is the word that has let say spread the most to all languages. In Spanish we call them griegos, from graecus, and Grecia which comes from Graecia (like for example Magna Graecia) but we call Grecia as well sometimes El pais heleno, o los helenos o la cultura helena o helénica (not often). That's the way it is with languages, nothing wrong.

Hello, if you want to really know greece you should see an orthodox liturgy (direct descendant of the ancient greek theatre) or see a tama (direct descendant of ancient greek offerings to god Asklepios). there are no real polytheists in Greece, just people pretending to be. True polytheism died out 1000 years ago.
