Rügen (Ruegen or Rugen, 2024) is the largest island of Germany. Rügen is located in the Baltic Sea and part of the German State Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The island is connected with a bridge and causeway to the mainland of Germany and linked to the city of Stralsund. Rügen is 52 km long and 43 km wide. It has many cliffs, headlands, beaches, bays, lagoons, birds and the Jasmund National Park which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rügen is an important tourist destination. The total population of the island is 77,000.
