I never use this on a pad. If you want to use a toner to make sure you remove all traces of dirt and/or makeup, use a cheap toner instead and then pat the Paula’s Choice BHA treatment over that. It’s too expensive to waste on a cotton pad. If you have no worries about expense, do it, but to save $$, apply with your clean hands.

    Hi Melissa,
Your explanation is up to the point, actually helpful, and very short. I didn't get confused at all, thank you.
I am a beginner, so I wanted to check if I am doing this correctly:
    AM Everyday Routine :
    1. Wash just with lukewarm water. (pat dry)
    2. Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant - from your video (wait 2 mins)
    3. Minimalist 10% Vitamin C Face Serum for Glowing Skin (wait 2 mins)
    4. The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Oil Control Serum (wait 2 mins)
    5. Cerave Hyaluronic Acid Serum for the Face with Vitamin B5 and Ceramides (wait 2 mins)
    6. CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 | Oil-Free Face Moisturizer with Sunscreen
    PM everyday Routine:
    1. CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser | Moisturizing Non-Foaming Face Wash with Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides, and Glycerin - I have dry skin, so I selected this. (pat dry)
    2. Minimalist 0.3% Retinol Serum For Face For Anti Aging. (wait 2 mins)
    3. CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion | Night Cream with Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide
PM every three days Once Routine:
    1. CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser | Moisturizing Non-Foaming Face Wash with Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides, and Glycerin - I have dry skin, so I selected this. (pat dry)
    2. The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Exfoliating Peeling Solution (wait 2 mins)
    3. CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion | Night Cream with Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide
    Doubts:
    1. Is cleanser one time a day enough because doing it two times a day might take off too much oil? I saw many people saying nighttime is good for cleansing. If so, what should I do in the morning? Directly wash with lukewarm water and go to step 2 directly.
    2. I heard Cerave Hyaluronic Acid Serum needs a little wet face to lock the water in, so do I spray with a mist bottle using water after applying serum and before applying hyaluronic acid serum?
    3. is my AM routine in the correct order?
    3. is my PM routine in the correct order along with every three days once chemical peeling method? ( I skip retinol on the night I do exfoliation).
    4. I want to know the best vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, retinol, AHA BHA, and moisturizer options. (I can spend around 30 - 40 per product if the product is good)
    5. is it fine to use PC BHA 2% to exfoliate every day in the morning and at night every three days once The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Exfoliating Peeling Solution?
    6. Where does COSRX Snail Mucin 96% Power Repairing Essence 3.38 fl. oz 100ml, Hydrating Serum for Face fit into my routine (will it replace Cerave Hyaluronic Acid Serum or both to be used at different steps or is it used as moisturizer right before SPF)?
    7. If I use Cerave Hyaluronic Acid Serum or COSRX Snail Mucin 96% Power Repairing Essence for hydration, does it come in as a second step right after washing my face, or should I use either of them after serums?
    8. CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30. Is this SPF enough, or must I use explicit SPF sunscreen again? I will mostly be indoors as I am a software developer.
I know I have asked many questions, but you seemed to be the right person on CZcams, to be honest, to get a proper answer from my perspective.
I have to point out that I do have rare acne pop-ups, and my skin is dry to normal kind, with hints of acne scars (redness on cheeks, used to have rosacea). For reference, My ethnicity is South Asian (Indian, Male, 25), so I would say brown to white color ( on the fair side of brown, so redness is visible).
Thanks once again for the awesome content.

      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  Před 6 měsíci +4

      Hey! :)
Why do you use PC BHA if you have dry skin?
      1. I recommend washing the face with a suitable cleanser for your skin type in the AM and PM to properly remove any residue of sweat, dirt, and skincare products from the skin. Choosing the right cleanser is really the key! You could even use a mild, hydrating foaming cleanser like the one Cetaphil or Beauty of Joseon offers. Additionally, you may find it helpful to use a 'reusable makeup remover washcloth' - that's what they're called - in between to get everything properly off the skin, especially when washing your face above the sink.
      2. No, if you’re using a Hyaluronic Acid Toner, Essence, Serum, or Cream, you do not need to apply it to wet skin. Hyaluronic Acid in a product formulation has already absorbed all the water it can absorb - as all these formulations contain water - and therefore does not need additional water on the skin. In fact, doing this can lead to diluting the product, not properly absorbing into the skin, can cause pilling, and even an uncomfortable and tight feeling.
      3. The order of application of your AM routine looks good. However, I wouldn’t use The Ordinary Niacinamide and Minimalist Vitamin C serum in the same routine as they can conflict with one another, losing potentially some of the benefits. So, you could use Niacinamide in the PM before applying your Retinol, but not necessarily after the Peeling Solution - in that case, just follow with hydration.
      4. Yes, your PM routines look good!
      5. Vitamin C: Geek & Gorgeous, Timeless, and Paula’s Choice have great pure form of Vitamin C products. Beauty of Joseon and Minimalist have great Ethylated Ascorbic Acid Serums, and The Ordinary Ascorbyl Glucoside (Vitamin C Derivative) is great too!
Niacinamide and Hyaluronic Acid: Any brand... really! The Ordinary, The Inkey List, Minimalist, Good Molecules, Paula’s Choice, Geek & Gorgeous, Beauty of Joseon, etc...
Retinol: Good Molecules Gentle Retinol Cream, Paula’s Choice 0.3%, Geek & Gorgeous Retinal. However, since you have dry skin, you may also like The Ordinary, Minimalist, etc., something in an oil formulation.
AHA/BHA: The Ordinary, Geek & Gorgeous, COSRX, Beauty of Joseon, Minimalist, Paula’s Choice, and so on...
Moisturizers - I do not have dry skin; that’s why I usually prefer something light. However, CeraVe, Cetaphil, Geek & Gorgeous, The Ordinary have great ones.
      6. How often you can use PC BHA, Retinol, and the Peeling Solution during the week really depends on your skin tolerance. However, I recommend starting slowly to see how your skin responds and then, if still needed, you can always increase or decrease the frequency if sensitivities should occur. Generally speaking, I wouldn’t use PC BHA in the AM when using the Peeling Solution in the PM. Alternatively, just use the Peeling Solution 1-2 times a month and use PC BHA more often.
      7. Use COSRX Snail Essence before applying your serums but after the Peeling Solution. Use either the Essence or CeraVe Hyaluronic Acid Serum.
      8. The order in which you use your HA Serum or the Snail Essence depends on the product formulation. CeraVe’s Hyaluronic Acid is a bit like a light lotion; that’s why you would use it after your water-based liquid serums.
      9. If you do not really have a lot of UV exposure and you stay mostly indoors, CeraVe AM Moisturizer with SPF should be enough. In that case, you likely also do not really need to reapply it throughout the day. However, if you spend a day mostly outdoors, I recommend using a sunscreen with a higher SPF and use it instead of CeraVe AM Moisturizer.

@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Wow, thanks for a superb response. This gives me so much clarity I can explain it in words.
      1. So you do not recommend using PC 2% BHA because I have little dry skin? Or limit it to 3-4 times a week and avoid it in the mornings if I used AHA BHA peeling before night? - I haven't used it yet but was about to because once I do AHA BHA peel, my skin pores get very small, and my skin becomes clear. This PC BHA 2% does the same, so I wanted to use it. Or Do you recommend I use PC 8% AHA instead of this for everyday use to minimize pores and clear skin?
      2. So, do Vitamin C and Niacinamide not go well because of this particular combination of brands, or should they never mix them and keep Vitamin C in the morning and Niacinamide at night?
      3. What would you suggest I use: Cerave Hyaluronic Acid Serum or COSRX Snail Mucin 96% Power Repairing Essence for hydration between these 2?
      4. So, instead of just using lukewarm water, I can use a mild cleanser in the morning and CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser at night. Do you think that will work? Or should I use CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser twice in the morning and night?
      5. Do you know if I need to include any essential step/product in both of my routines or do you have any suggestions?

@@sreenidhiiyengarm9812 If your skin responds well to PC BHA, you do not need to change it. However, usually, AHA is recommended for drier skin. Still, PC has several exfoliating acids available in different formulations like liquid, gel, or lotion.

It sounds like you're using too many products containing salicylic acid and using them too often. I suggest using just one of them, either your salicylic acid cleanser or gel, and adjusting the frequency to once per day every other day. Then, gradually adjust the frequency over time. I also recommend using a non-exfoliating acid cleanser, ideally a balm cleanser such as The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser or Geek & Gorgeous Mighty Melt Cleansing Balm, to properly cleanse your face while keeping your skin hydrated.

Yeah, that's the irony, lol. Essentially, yes, that is what the majority of people are thinking, and I believe it's best to do that. I also use them that way and posted about it on the community forum a couple of months ago. Dirt and grime aren't so much of an issue since you already remove them with your cleanser, but the flakes may become problematic. So, I personally apply the product on its own and leave it overnight. Then the next day, I just cleanse my face again. That method has shown the best results for me. You can also cleanse your face, apply it, and then after 15-30 minutes, rinse it off and moisturize. I mean, there are many ways that you can experiment.

We should apply the exfoliant on dry skin right? But if I want to apply moisturiser after, can I straight away apply it because moisturiser need to apply on damp skin so should I wait for the exfoliant to absorb first?

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  Před rokem +7

Damp skin refers to when the skin has absorbed some water but has been patted dry on the surface, so it does not appear any different from the outside.
      Here's the recommended skincare routine:
      Cleanse your face.
Pat dry your face, leaving the skin slightly damp on the inside.
      Apply BHA.
Wait a couple of minutes for it to work.
      Apply moisturizer if needed.

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  Před rokem +12

No, that is a bit weird.
      The correct order would be:
Cleanser: Start by cleansing your skin.
      Pat the skin dry.
BHA liquid exfoliant: Apply the BHA liquid exfoliant as it helps to loosen the dead skin cells, allowing the products that follow to penetrate better or more effectively into the skin.
Wait 1-2 minutes for it to work.
Hyaluronic acid or niacinamide: Apply either hyaluronic acid or niacinamide. Technically, it doesn't matter which one you choose as both are water-based and have a similar texture.
Apply sunscreen: Finish off by applying sunscreen to protect your skin.

      Hey! :)
I tend to pop my pimples when they are ready! However, using the exfoliant right afterwards may lead to stinging because the acid gets into the wound, so I would probably wait a day or two until it's closed again.
I always use a soft microfiber/makeup remover cloth in between my cleansing step so that I can take everything properly off the skin. That way, I can apply my toner or exfoliant with my hands and do not need to worry about any residue :)

You might have acne on your nose due to several factors. These include the clogging of sebaceous glands with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria; fluctuations in hormones leading to increased oil production; diet and lifestyle factors like stress that may contribute to acne; and the use of skin care products that can irritate the skin or clog pores, especially if they are not non-comedogenic.

While Paula's Choice 2% BHA is renowned for exfoliating and improving skin texture, achieving the "glass skin" look you're referring to involves more than just one product. "Glass skin," as popularized in the beauty world, signifies skin that's exceptionally smooth and translucent. However, it's essential to understand that the portrayal of such flawless skin often involves makeup, filters, and editing, creating an unrealistic standard.
Paula's Choice 2% BHA can be a beneficial part of a broader skincare routine, but achieving and maintaining that desired look will likely involve a holistic approach to skincare, including hydration, protection, and other targeted treatments. Also, remember that everyone's skin is unique, and results can vary.
It's great to have skincare goals, but prioritize healthy skincare and self-acceptance over chasing possibly unrealistic standards.

Hi! Why do you recommend to not use moisturiser in the night for oily skin? TEWL happens to every skin type. Shouldn’t we protect our oily skin from dehydration? Oily skin often can be dehydrated regardless of the amount of sebum our skin has produced.
Looking forward to your response because it seems we have different opinions on this subject.
    Cheers!

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  Před 6 měsíci +2

Yes, but all these formulations contain ingredients with hydrating properties. In this case, it's primarily water, but also ingredients like methylpropanediol and butylene glycol. Essentially, you're providing hydration to the skin. This is true for 99.9% of these products, meaning you provide the necessary hydration along with the SA (salicylic acid) you wish to use on the skin.
The oils we have are sufficient to seal in that moisture, so there's no need for additional oils or other sealing agents.
However, when it comes to exfoliating acids, using moisturizers afterward opens up another can of worms. It becomes questionable to use them after these acids, as they can potentially be brought out of their pH range, rendering them ineffective.

      Thanks for your reply Melissa.
I feel like I could clean/ clear my pores more with a clay mask.
I have been practicing this routine for one month now (i started exfoliant once in a week, to once in 5 day, to once in 4 day, now from tomorrow I am going for once in 3 day).
I can see minor improvement on my existing pimples (but also noticed new pimples coming - maybe due to periods).
But my face tends to be too oily some time (still someday i feel like my face is not much oily as before)
Sorry, the cleanser I am using is Cetaphil (not Cerave) Oily Skin Cleanser - It’s showing Creamy type (as cleanser type)
So you are recommending not to introduce clay mask with AHA content to my routine ?

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  Před 4 měsíci

@@ARBASAKBAR Okay, well, yes, essentially, that is what I meant, but it may or may not be beneficial. It's really hard to say, as I experimented with these clay masks as well, but they were extremely drying, and I felt like they were not that good. However, you may enjoy them; I'm really not sure about that, as I have not gone back and tested other formulations. But it's probably something to keep in mind.
Apart from that, my acne seems to be highly correlated with food additives and processed food. So, in case you consume many products containing them, I would suggest looking at these and narrowing them down. This way, it can improve without any treatments. But yes, hormones can also play a big role. I always get a few pimples during my period, and they are just unstoppable. What works best for me is a benzoyl peroxide cleanser or gel, which I then only apply to the areas where they appear during that time, and it helps to get rid of them faster for sure.

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  Před 4 měsíci

@@ARBASAKBAR Well, you can exfoliate daily if you use a gentle exfoliant. However, it ultimately depends on other skincare products you are using during the week, as well as your personal skin tolerance for these ingredients. So, it's best to test it out and see what frequency works best for you.
Overall, if you experience a lot of oiliness, the best thing you can do is use paper towels or blotting paper to tap it off. You could also use mattifying products during the day, but they only work to a certain extent and, of course, it depends on what you may be doing during the day.
And, I am currently using Benzac benzoyl peroxide gel/cream. It's available in different strengths. However, depending on your area, it may have different names, so look for good products in your area.

Yes, that's what I mentioned in some other replies. The reason is that it exfoliates the skin. As a result, the buildup of dead skin reduces, which can make your pores in some cases more visible. SA (Salicylic Acid) can decrease oiliness, and this might make the pores less apparent. So, if that was the primary concern, using SA could technically work. However, if that wasn't the issue, then there's no guarantee it would help; it might even have the opposite effect. In your case, it's likely just genetics, so there's no way to change this.

Here's a simple way to determine your skin type at home:
Cleanse Your Face: First, cleanse your face with a mild cleanser, and gently pat it dry. Do not use any other skincare products immediately afterwards.
Wait for an Hour: After cleansing your face, wait for an hour. This allows your skin to return to its natural state, free of any cleansers or moisturizers.
Assess Your Skin: Now, it's time to determine your skin type.
      Here's how:
Normal Skin: If your skin does not feel tight, dry, or oily, but feels comfortable, you likely have normal skin. Your skin's texture would be smooth, soft, and has an even skin tone.
Dry Skin: If your skin feels tight, especially around your cheeks and forehead, and you can see some flaky areas or redness, you likely have dry skin. Dry skin lacks the necessary amount of oil it needs to keep it moisturized.
Oily Skin: If your skin looks shiny, particularly in your T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) and you can feel oiliness when you touch your face, you likely have oily skin. Oily skin is characterized by overactive sebaceous (oil) glands.
Combination Skin: If your skin is dry/tight on the cheeks but oily in the T-zone, you likely have combination skin. This is a very common skin type.
Sensitive Skin: If your skin tends to get red, inflamed, itchy, or irritated often, you likely have sensitive skin. You might react to certain skincare products or environmental factors more easily than others.
Try this at home and let me know what type it is. Then, I can help you set up the routine with the products you have. Additionally, you can watch this video as it should assist you in setting up the routine:

But after a few hours (even when I didn't use anything after using the cleanse and I was at home) when I touch those areas, I can feel oil on my fingers. The signs are mixed (at first more like dry, and then oily) but I heard that oily skin causes sebaceous filaments and enlarged pores that I have. So I still not sure what is my skin type. Now, what do you think? How can I treat the pores with the products I bought?

@@mortezamalek895 It sounds like you have combination skin. You have the right products, now you just need to figure out what works best for you.
My suggestion would be to start with this routine:
      AM:
Clean your face with CeraVe foaming cleanser.
Pat dry with a clean towel.
Apply sunscreen (if you're exposed to the sun; otherwise, just use the moisturizer, or leave your skin as is).
      PM:

Pat dry with a clean towel.
      Apply Paula's Choice 2% BHA.
      Wait a couple of minutes.

      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  Před 3 měsíci

Generally, if you do not have any UV exposure, you do not need to use sunscreen; that's somewhat nonsensical. Moreover, if you apply it in the evening, you can technically leave it on until the next morning.

BHA refers to salicylic acid, so no, it's better to choose just one formulation.

Hey, I switch between retinol and Paulas choice on different days but which cleanser can I use for both?
    For retinol i use:
    -Pure cleansing oil
    -Retinol
    -Moisturizer
    For Paulas choice:
    -Pure cleansing oil
-(Can i use after that a foaming cleanser with glycolic and salicylic acid, because for retinol i think its not good)
    -Paulas choice
    -Moisturizer
    For peeling
    -Pure cleansing oil
    -Peeling
    -Moisturizer

Hey! 😊 Since you're using an Exfoliant (PC BHA) and a Retinol, I recommend using a non-exfoliating acid foaming cleanser, such as one of these: czcams.com/video/qMd1tWxPWLM/video.html.
Only use an oil or balm cleanser when trying to remove your sunscreen and/or makeup that may not come off easily with just your regular cleanser. In that case, you can also do a double cleanse like this: czcams.com/video/vfyPow-SeAo/video.html.

Do you have oily, acne-prone skin?
If so, follow the routine below:
      For your evening (PM) routine:
Start by cleansing with a Cerave cleanser. After washing, gently pat your skin dry.
Next, apply Paula's Choice exfoliant and wait for 2 minutes.
Then, apply G&G Hydration Station or The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + Beta Glucan.
Avoid heavy creams and harsh scrubs unless you have a gentle one, such as Paula's Choice The Unscrub. Remember, you're already using a BHA, which acts as your chemical exfoliant.
      For your morning (AM) routine:
Clean your face and pat it dry.
If desired, apply one of the recommended moisturizers and wait for 1-2 minutes.
Lastly, if you're exposed to the sun, apply sunscreen. For example, you could use NIOD Survival 30 or Good Molecules Mineral SPF.
This routine should be beneficial for your skin type.

You may want to try their BHA gel or lotion instead. However, I also highly recommend looking into factors such as lack of sleep, stress, and your diet to address the root cause of your acne! See here: www.youtube.com/@MelissaVanDijkOfficial/community

If I’m using squalane serum by the ordinary then when do I use the Paulas choice exfoliant in my routine? When using squalane you’re supposed to combine it with water so how do I do that if I’ve dried my face out with the exfoliant?

So, do you have the 100% Plant-Derived Squalane?
If so, you can apply it after the exfoliant.
Clean your face with a mild, non-exfoliating acid cleanser.
      Pat dry.
      Apply Paula's Choice BHA 2%.
      Wait a couple of minutes.
      Apply 100% plant-derived squalane.
Apply an additional moisturizer if needed.
Alternatively, you could mix 2-3 drops of the squalane with a pea to a bean-sized amount of your moisturizer and apply that mixture instead of applying both separately.

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  Před rokem

@@arundhativashishth4099 What does a healthy diet mean? To me, not much. You can eat healthily and still react to food or spices like an allergy. Or if your food has been treated with toxins. Such things can cause inflammation in your gut, leading to stomach pain, not properly digesting the food, and then getting acne from it. I recommend just eating food where you know that your gut can tolerate it well - whatever type of food that may be. This way, you can reduce the inflammation and see a reduction in your acne. I recommend choosing a 2% Salicylic Acid Cleanser or 4-5% Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser. You can still alternate between that one and your regular cleanser.

Yes, you could add a Salicylic Acid (BHA) product to your current skincare routine. However, I also recommend extracting your blackheads from time to time with a tool (or get it done by a professional) and then maintain with your exfoliant.
