Though young and quite new to ballet and Balanchine, I was in the right place at the right time. I saw Farrell and Martins dance this ballet at least 5 or 6 times (c1979-1982). I Remember that in the opening Dance of the Blessed Spirit, the flawless fluidity was such that Martins seemed not to be lifting Farrell but rather catching her and bringing her down to earth, so weightless did it seem to me then. I will never forget this. Thank you, Mr. Clifford.
I first saw this dream of a ballet in the lobby of the theater, where it was shown on a screen. It was indeed a dream. My first acquaintance with Farrell and Martins and Chaconne. I hear she is back to coach Diamonds at NYCBallet. She should have been there all along.
This is perfect. Ethereal. Dream-like. My favorite Balanchine ballet. Love Gluck's music. Farrell and Martins are unsurpassed. I was privileged enough to see them together live at City Center in the seventies. Lucky enough to have this video.
The set is gorgeous. The lighting is wonderful. This pas de deux is one of my favorite of all time. It is the plush epitome of Suzanne Farrell. Sheerly sublime. The choreography is unique and splendid, and an incredible manifestation of the magical music.
In un'ambientazione eterea il balletto duale che sembra trasognare e in un'albescente clima il corollario danzante come dolce esclusivo sogno di perfezione e levità. BRAVISSIMI TUTTI.BIGHIN GIULIO RENZO.
I've always loved this ballet. I think I first saw this on TV, then in performance at the State Theater. Hard to believe that this was so long ago. So much has happened since.
I think Balanchine really was the Man of Lamancha. He was in love with Farrell. She didn’t return the favor. But it made her the luckiest dancer in NY. She was just lucky!
@@speteydog2260 Well I think that it does take more than hard work to be as stellar as she is - but I think that without extraordinarily hard work added to "luck" and genius you'd only get halfway there - if that.
I love Peter's solo in this. The sets for this ballet are so fantastic. Peter, Suzanne, Balanchine, and the music. I never get tired of watching Chaconne.
The incomparable Suzanne! What an incredible dancer! Such speed, musicality, elegance; no words can do her justice; I'm amazed at how fast Martins can dance being a taller dancer. And his partnering of her is superb. He & she are supreme!
This has always been one of my favorite Balanchine ballets. I wish the company would do it again. The opening adagio is perfection and still gives me chills. Martins is so perfect in his allegro its almost hard to watch and I love how Farrell's Farrelisms play off of that. Every composition student should have to watch this to see how theme/variation carry from duet to group and back to duet. Thank you so much for sharing. I have an old copy on VHS that is unwatchable and now I can enjoy again!
Really lovely. And interesting to see how the baroque music highlights the limitations of dance to music that is so formal - how do you express dynamic difference (forte, piano) used so much to mark repetitions when the dancer has the same steps and the eye of the audience is looking at the entire body - how to insert ornamentation while keeping the same general form is a much greater challege to dancers than musicians. Fascinating to watch how the choreography and dancers deal with this.
I am so very happy she is finally home at NYCB. Now she is teaching the dances that was choreographed for her by Mr Balanchine. I love this ballet. Farrell and Martin had that great chemistry when they danced together.
@@jcliff26 I meant I am happy she is back home even if she is just coaching the dancer's on 'Diamonds' only. You would know more Mr Clifford from your friends in NYCB. I had hoped they invited her to stay until she retires. ☹ I would of loved for her to stay and teach the dances the way Mr Balanchine would of wanted it. I have been waiting for a long time for her to be back at NYCB in light of how she was treated and was fired a long time ago. Please do keep us in touch Mr Clifford. Thank you! 😊
@@jcliff26 Oh no! I would have sworn that once the door was open that she would be spending more and more time at NYCB *and* SAB! Here's hoping for the future...

Beautiful comment!
Suzanne Farrell - one of the Goddesses of ballet.
a taste of heaven.

There will never be another Suzanne Farrell 😢…..she is a gift from another space❤❤

Speaking of the set, what is it supposed to be?
This piece should be performed more often, world wide!
Suzanne is just spellbounding. And this whole piece makes you speechless!
Absolutely incredible. Thank you so much for this.❤
Wow! Nothing like Suzanne Farrell & Peter Martins. Oh those legs! They’re all quite lovely actually,
Meraviglioso... e Meravigliosa!!!
Those are fprofessionals music and movements fluid together nice to hear andnice to watch my own soul is involved

Who is in the ensemble/corps de ballet that would eventually become well known?

Yes but she also worked incredibly hard.
@@jcliff26 A lot of dancers work really hard. It’s a fickle world, The World of Ballet.
@@speteydog2260 You don’t need to tell me. However Suzanne did work harder than most and I saw this on a daily basis.

He married Maria Tallchief, a different ballerina. I think he made his choice
Balanchine must have been inspired by his Christian background, this is so beautiful!
@jcliff26 Can you show part 1 & 2?

She is exquisite. Both are wonderful. Thank you!
Probably the most perfect set of sequences in all of ballet.
Exquisite--in spite of its restraint, and perhaps because of it! Ah ha, mid-way through, fast foot work. Clean. Nice.
Lovely! The Gluck music with such beautiful dancers.
Thank you!
Thank you for posting this! I saw it on TV ages ago and always wanted to see it again.

She is hardly that. She was invited only to have two coaching sessions for DIAMONDS, unless you know something I don’t.

M D I agree and have stated that many times. We will see if she’s invited back but so far she was given only two days on one ballet.

What is the name of the song?! I know I've listened to this music before.
DANCE OF THE BLESSED SPIRITS from Gluck’s opera “Orpheus and Eurydice.”
It in NOT a song...no body is singing. It is an instrumental piece of music by a German classical composer - Christoph Cluck
