  • This is another project I have on the go, and although it has apparently been coming along quite well, the engine, clutch and gearbox need a little more attention than I was led to expect, as can be seen here!

Thank goodness you found that backwards split-link.
    Potential massive disaster averted there.

Having been brought up on Triumph and BSA twins, and fed derogatory propaganda about everything else, it was a wonderful revelation to discover that RE twins are a delight to ride. AMC twins have a good deal of charm as well, in their own way.

I've got a 1959 Constellation which I'm also rebuilding. In the past I owned a 1959 Super Meteor which was a brilliant bike. Later I bought a Constellation with higher compression and more performance, but to be honest, I preferred the Super Meteor.
Mainly because the Constellation had higher compression it used to blow its head gasket and make a chirping noise, also the scissor clutch had less plates used to slip, so you couldn't really used the extra grunt. The Super Meteor on the other hand, had slightly lower compression and a normal push road clutch with more plates in it, so it didn't slip. Therefore, it had a much more useable performance and could easily lift the front wheel if you pulled away too quickly. So im trying to make my present Constellation more like the Super Meteor and have changed the gearbox shaft so I can fit the earlier clutch. However, now you've said the shafts are shorter I'm going to have to check it out ! 👍😊

Hi John, I said in the video that the shafts are longer in the twins than they are for the singles. I don't know if scissor mainshafts are the same length as pushrod types for the twins, but would assume they are. Both types are available new from Hitchcocks, as it happens.

Ok, thanks for that, I will have to check the length of the s/h shaft I have fitted.
If it is too short, at least I now know Hitchcock's have the right ones, so thanks ! 👍😊

On the S1A Interceptors, I replace the stud & nut with a bolt and helicoil the 'ole. In order to remove the jockey sprocket &/or other bits, I found I had to remove the stud, which is a massive pain to do and not good for the crankcase thread. I imagine the Connies are the same? I had the cases split when I did the helicoil & probably do not recommend doing it in situ, unless the thread pulls out when you go to reassemble. Always struck me as a bit daft having to remove that stud in order to disassemble the timing gear, but could not get it to bits otherwise. Perhaps if I had a link in the chain... but I wouldn't recommend that either. I look forward to seeing how it goes. TTFN Jack

it can only hold so many surprises paul, i suppose its mostly uphill at first
but as you fix things it has to level out hey ,and that `was a good runner` lol!
but i`m sure that prophecy will come true 😇👍 with a following wind .

Hi Paul, might be a duplicate, but I have an Enfield gearbox that doesn’t appear to have a hole through it. I bought it recently for a back burner electric trials bike project. If it was of use I’m sure we could come to arrangement, swap or whatever. Cheers Richard

So the owner brought you partially disassembled bike with a goal to put it together? But engine . primary and a gearbox were not touched / checked by anybody and during assembly you find all this problems? I see all this black oil in under a timing cover and wander what surprises you would found taking this engine apart.

Fit a new timing chain , when they stretch they can throw the timing out by nearly a tooth , do not spoil your brilliant work foe a halfpenth of tar .....started my time in 1968 so not a novice
