- While regularly staying up late at night with my newborn, I had plenty of time to study all of RuneScape's earliest update logs and Bluerose13x history in order to create the perfect list of Best in Slot combat gear with way too much precision. I hope you enjoy it. Share your thoughts about ANYTHING - did I miss one?

Hey, everyone. Thank you all so much for the kind words and support on this video. I'm looking forward to making many more nostalgic videos similar to this one in the near future. Stay tuned!
I also want to share some incredibly helpful additional insights from the comments that slightly change some considerations from the video:
There were no stat checks for gear at release so you could wear adamant at level 1 instead of level 30. Black, Red, and Blue Capes had different stats until the ability to dye capes made them all equal - blue was best followed by red then black. In RS2 it was possible to change Family Crest Gauntlets but not until August 2005 (not March 2004). Dragon plateskirts were released a couple months after the legs in March 2005. Metal boots didn't have a strength bonus until 2006 or so. The Abyssal Whip was released on February 15th (misspoke), not January 15th. The first Whip was supposedly received at the end of February 2005.
I also discovered that the Green Day album came out a year earlier than I said in September of 2004 so it's me. I'm the American idiot.
Lol "I'm the American idiot," got me. Good content, keep it up! The nostalgia train is real. Started playing in what must've been 2003/4. Just got back into it.
early rs2 post-launch platebodies still had gloves attached, so wearing gauntlets with platebody wouldn't be possible 25:20

A small story of how I got my first whip. I was a pretty big noob and could never afford one. My brother was a much bigger player and he had a friend who lived in Europe, we were in the US. His European friend had the slayer level to kill Abyssal Demoms and while he slept, my brother would use his account to grind demons for whips to sell and split the profits. One day while my brother was at a party and I was at home, I snuck into my brothers room, found the paper with the login info and got on. I grinded out demons til a whip dropped, took about 3 hours. I traded it to my account and replaced all the food and supplies I had used on the account and put it back where he was originally logged out at. They never knew and that’s how a total noob was able to get a whip.
Absolutely devious and yet something we all would have done if given the opportunity.
Pretty smart thinking for a kid
I woulda took everything 😂
I joined a clan and won a whip about a week later from some celebration event. Needless to say, all the OG clan members were PISSED that some FNG took the top prize of the day 😂😂 I will never forget that day 😊
I also had to grind all weekend because I didn’t have the attack level to wield it lol.
It really felt like Jagex was timing their updates just to crush BlueRose. We will never stop stanning our queen.
Yes, they were stopping monopolizing gear 😂
Jagex par excellence lmfao
The funnest part watching this was seeing Classic's BIS gear development largely be "Bluerose gets an important Smithing level milestone and Jagex comes in with the steel chair" numerous times
"Jagex comes in with the steel chair". What does this mean?
think a chair match in WWE or w/e lol
“WATCH OUT WATCH OUT WTCH OUT”
@@quirkyelephant punish/hurt them out of spite
From wrestling, where they hit each other with steel chairs
>Bluerose grinds her ass off to get to new most powerful item
Jagex: I'm about to end this items whole career
The timing makes me really wonder whether it was intentional or not. Was it really just a coincidence that it was quite literally the very next day?
Definitely not, but she would have become way too rich otherwise. She would have had a literal monopoly on the item production.@HamOSRS
Blue rose was scummy. Price gouged worse than the guy who jacked up the aids medications 700%
Rune was definitely planned ahead of time anyways, the levels to 99 and name just make sense. Clearly they did seem to rush the update out after she got the smithing level though. Maybe they didn't like her or thought she was botting.
@@GhostLyricistI suspect it was shock. "Wait, someone ALREADY got there? God, we need new content for her."
As a guy that's been playing since early February 2002, this video is top quality content and took me down memory lane. Thank you
I'm glad you enjoyed the trip down memory lane! The new series hitting the channel next will scratch that same itch.
@@HamOSRS Sounds great bro. Earned a new subscriber, and I'll turn the bell on. Can't wait.
I know I started in 3rd grade which was 01/02 but how in gods name do you know the month
@@HamOSRSvideo question I started in 01/02 but I’m wondering when I started jagex had stated the game had been available since 99 you just stated 01 .
Edit this based on the copyright for RuneScape starting in 99
@@G-bl8hjRuneScape opened in January 2001. Prior to that, there was a web game called DeviousMUD made by the Gower brothers but that very quickly shut down while they began working on RuneScape.
You can find out the age of an account by talking to Hans in Lumbridge, but be careful keep his answer to yourself because that info can be used to steal an account via account recovery.
Hit me right in the nostalgia. I spammed lyrics to American idiot at castle wars all day everyday as a little kid. Good times, good times.
I wonder if they are holding a smithing update hostage, out of spite for Bluerose13x
9:24 the teacups in the water was an AWESOME and underrated visual gag. That was great lol
10/10 great video, this is the kind of content i love to see. Interesting & informative, no clickbait thumbnail, just enough humor and perfectly paced and not one subject is drawn out too much. Genuinely loved the video and you got my subscription!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and that gag. It was one of my favorites to sneak into the video.
@@HamOSRScant be understated how great this video was to watch. Long time player since classic and watching this kind of thing always sparks my interest
Ill be watching the next upload for sure
@@RickyThaRat You're going to love the main series on this channel coming very soon then. It's in the same spirit as this video but it's not in video essay format.
The quality, editing, and attention to detail in storytelling is crazy good. Wow. Keep it up dude. I enjoyed every video edit and visualization.
The editing really is incredible, but it's not my own. I'm a pretty big fan of their work too needless to say.
I was just a kid, maybe 6 or 7 when I played for the first time way back near the beginning. This game’s been with me for life. What a nostalgia trip. Great video!
I'm glad to hear you were able to enjoy a stroll down memory lane! Stay tuned for more!
Good vid, I remember collecting runes to trade bluerose to make my rune square shield when it first came out, also I was one of the people perma banned for pvping with the knife bug. Good times
i miss these days so much.. I have vivid memories of being in 5th grade, sitting at school drawing zammy armor, thinking about how the night prior i unlocked water bolt and was excited to run home and train with it.. Ugh... I need to go back.
Just checked your channel, and you casually come back after 14 years and drop this fire? Sheeesh, gj bro, subscribed!
Debating whether or not to make some old videos public again, but we'll see. It was a different game on CZcams 15 years ago.
I watched this video and was amazed by the amount of research and dedication you created for this. I started RS just as the construction skill went live, so this was a great trip down memory lane. I went to your channel, and you only have 500 subscribers?! This is top tier content, and I can't wait for the many more videos to come.
Half of my subscribers are from 4 years of making videos up until 16 years ago. The other half are from yesterday!
Great video man, keep it up. I loved the references to your personal rs experience.
This was great, love this kind of content. Would love to see more video essays/time pieces.
The main series on this channel coming soon won't be in that same format, but it should be very similar in spirit to what you're looking for.
This was great make another. I went to your channel thinking you have been doing this forever because of how well polished it was
Thank you! To be fair, I did start making videos on this channel in 2007. Just a very long break in between.
"You probably still have an obsidian cape and a combat bracelet today in old school" I DO NOT LIKE BEING CALLED OUT LIKE THAT THOOO
I used to be pretty bad at bossing, but I found Vorkath in 2018 to be the confidence boost that I needed to tackle other bosses as well. You should check out the new rat boss Scurrius if you want to get better at PvM mechanics. It does a really good job of teaching you the basics and giving you the confidence you need to utilize the skills you already have. Good luck against Jad and the Culinaromancer! You've got this!
I have 94 strength and have never even ATTEMPTED to get a fire cape yet. Or fight any boss for that matter, outside of simple quest bosses.
I've been playing RuneScape since 2005, and I've only died once. Because I'm way too scared. I don't really take risks. Though I have completed 102 quests and have 203 quest points. I just don't try anything with advanced combat mechanics, like prayer flicking, or anything where you really have to learn patterns and timing, etc.
My health pretty much *never* goes below half, because I'd panic too much if it did. If I ever got hit for 20+ damage, I'd probably react by screaming and closing my laptop 😂
I did do Recipe for Disaster last year though, so I have the Barrows gloves.
@@ShizuruNakatsuI too still play like a HCIM 20 years after losing all my items by dying to a Dwarf in the Mines in Classic 😂. You know, you can practice the Jad fight risk free on an alternate profile if you head to a quest speed running world and select Beneath Cursed Sands. You will start with a fire cape so you can use that to get into the inner circle of the TzHaar city and practice the 1 Jad challenge as many times as you like risk free. You've got this!

Class video this is a proper nostalgia trip and it's well presented! And humorous :D Looking forward to future content!
Thank you! Stay tuned for more very soon.
Wow, this was an incredible deep dive into Runescape's development history. Honestly even with all the research I did for Time Traveller Ironman I still learned so much. Nice work!
Thank you! This means a lot coming from one of my biggest inspirations for resurrecting my channel. Love your series!
This brought back so many good memories, thank you for making it!
Also, the level of research and time it would have taken to make this video shouldn't go unnoticed. Well done!
Glad to hear it, stay tuned for more nostalgia trips coming soon!
Love this video, I hope this video leverages your content to the right people and you smash it!
Cool video my guy. Great editing and quality.

In my heart, I want to believe you had already written your Green Day joke and we just happened to upload our cover *the day* before this well researched and well written video was uploaded.
That's exactly what happened lmao
I got a good laugh out of the mind goblin joke 🤣 Love the illustration of it!

Thank you, I appreciate it! We are launching episode 1 of a brand new series that we are so excited to share with the world in about a week and a half or so. Stay tuned for more very soon.
me currently rocking the 2007 bis because I just started again and wanted it from my childhood.
A quality made video, only a few minutes in but going to sub and like to show support.
Thank you so much! We have big plans for a unique new series coming soon that you won't want to miss.
Me thinking how have i not seen this channel before these are some good quality vids, then seeing the subscriber count. I see a golden gnome in your future!
There's a small chance you saw some old videos on this channel 15 years ago on my first try at video making, but my best video back then only had about 86k views. In any case, I'm no stranger to this game even after a long break. Either way, thank you for the kind words!
That was a really well made and interesting video!! 😃👍🏼👍🏼 I’ve been playing since roughly ‘05/‘06 and I learned a lot there, particularly about classic, which I never actually got to play. Nice job! Subscribed! - Machinist_2
Thank you! I always say that any day that you learn something new is a good day.
Very cool to see this in a video. Some of these things you've always just wondered
been playing this game for 17 years with no true breaks inbetween and i only just make this timeline in the last two updates lol, thats wild.
The video i never thought i needed but definitely did. Very well done sir! Sub well earned!
Thank you! Stay tuned for more very soon.
It's worth noting that when whips came out, they cost ~60m gp, and they attacked as fast as throwing knives which made them massively op... Jagex had to nerf to what it is today.
I didn't know like ANY of this :)
Glad you could learn something new! Lining up everything to happen in timeline order revealed a lot of interesting patterns.
Deserve more subs for sure! Amazing vid
Ayy, 1000th subscriber! Great video keep up the great work :)
This is a great video. You can tell that you are a true fan of runescape.
Thank you!
Really cool runescape history lesson, and clearly a lot of work was put into this video. Bravo
Thank you! Most of the research went toward the main series on the channel which will be premiering in about a week and a half. Stay tuned!
I hope we can expect more content out of you. This was great
The main series of this channel is premiering very soon. Stay tuned!
As someone who's also super intrigued in runescape classic and rs2, this video was a real treat!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! The next video was delayed unexpectedly but it will be a nice tribute mostly to some niche memories from RS2 as well as a couple from Classic. Stay tuned!
Yo this video rules! Hope to see you do more in the genre :)
Thank you! Definitely more to come. The main series hitting the channel soon will be similar in spirit but a unique twist on how it's presented.
@@HamOSRS That's awesome ^_^ personally my favorite part about this one was seeing an overview of the game's development over the years, because it helped me understand how the development of skills like smithing and slayer corresponded with where people's characters were at the time. As someone who played a stint in 2006-8 but never had membership, it's been fascinating seeing the progression of skills, items, and regions over the years since now that I'm playing more "seriously" all these years later. Really makes everything feel more cohesive and logical.
Anyway, rant over! Excited to see the next video, regardless of whether it does more of what I described :)
People had the levels to obtain whips a good bit before the d scim came out; you can view historical hi-scores using the wayback machine. For example, as of March 4th, 2005, at least 21 people had 85+ Slayer.
3 or 4 commenters have confirmed the same - thank you for the clarification.
Your videos are really good, I hope you keep making them
Stay tuned for more soon! There was a delay with the third video, but we will resume work on it as soon as possible.
this is the runescape we all would want to play again, if the devs ever bring it back, its the graphics that captivated all of us to play this game. The amount of players playing was insane. The diffciculty of making money back was really hard,, like i remember when cowhides were the best money maker back then. Also the highwayman was definitely the npc i always had to avoid XD. As a f2p player back then, dragon slayer was the hardest quest I ever tried and was also very scary to do.
I remember training on hill giants with my buddy man. For a few hours just two kids talking shit and clicking on game. Those were the days...training with someone and setting training times for logins.
It was sad when I realized I would never talk to some of those people again...
wow this is amazing thanks :)
Oh man. I'm looking forward to more of this haha
High quality video... I love those kind of stuff, maybe consider making Ranged/Magic BiS for RS2/2004 onwards
It’s crazy how I’ve been watching these videos and I haven’t played RuneScape since 2007 I’m 24 now I miss it sometimes
Check out Old School RuneScape for a fun nostalgia trip.
I played RS around 2005-2010 then stopped. But started watching content about it just recently starting 2020, and lemme tell you this video in particular is hitting me with tons of nostalgia lol. I specifically remember working my 15 yr old ass off to get the "meta" items of the era back in 2010.
Some people got whips before getting 85 slayer. There was a developer oversight for a while where rings of recoil worked on slayer monsters. So with some rings of recoil and an inhuman amount of patience, it was possible to kill abyssal demons without the slayer level requirement.
awesome video! Thank you
amazing video man, little time capsule
Forgotten but not lost, well done lad.
Awesome video 😊
Thank you!
I vaguely recall people getting abby whips on day 2 or so. There was a bug where you could use ring of recoil or whatever, and someone eventually got it.
Not sure if Jagex took it away though, but most likely banned the few who got it.
I think granite mauls were within first few weeks for sure though. Everyone went crazy over them for several weeks until abby whip became more available, then the price plummeted. I believe it was like 1-2m, then crashed to like 100-200k in a few days. Whips starting at 40m, and in a few months heading into 3-5m.
Really nice content
31:38 That makes me wonder what would have happened if Jagex had never tried to put a combat triangle in Runescape, but had made a different method of comparing the different combat styles. If Jagex had decided that melee would be tanky, and magic would be a glass cannon, I wonder how different OSRS would be now.
I just wish we had a 2004 melee only Castle Wars server before the combat triable without ancients.
@@HamOSRS I started playing in 2004, but I didn't become a member till like 2006 iirc. I have never experienced that. I am not sure that old servers would bring back the nostalgia, since people mostly play for the gains rather than for fun. How many people play castle wars on OSRS now? To my knowledge, players are afking for the collection slots rather than for fun. If it is the mindset rather than the mechanics, a new old server won't fix it.
@@Sir_Lagg_A_LotOh sorry I meant literally just one world on otherwise vanilla OSRS servers where we could play vanilla Castle Wars not a whole competing version of the game.
Nice video bro. I'd love if you did a video of the BiS gear from OSRS release day until OSRS in 2024
I'm hoping to make that video one day as well. Old School gets a lot more complex with a lot of gear that has special niches rather than BIS everywhere so it will take a bit more research than RSC or RS2 even though I already have the release dates of all the gear in my files.
this was fantastic
Man I cant imagine how much money that bluerose person mustve made. She was without doubt most likely the richest on the server after awhile.
I still remember the first time I saw a dragonfire shield, was just outside of castle wars, loads of people were following this guy around :D
Whips were going around pretty soon after they released. I remember being dumbfounded how many people had high enough slayer that soon.
Cripes, I remember living through some of these. Abyssal Whips were the shit for awhile, especially with their special that guaranteed a max hit. You saw someone in Castle Wars with one, you died.
Great vid man.
Thank you! Working on another nostalgic video essay coming soon.
I remember in RS2 seeing two players in Edgeville trash talk each other to the point that they flew into a rage and did a risk fight for their dragon long swords.
Hot damn- a video this long with this great quality on a channel with less than 1.5k subs? Say it ain't so.
Great video.
Stay tuned for more!
I still remember as a kid, everyone thought 99 mining + smithing was the way as you could create the best gear.
We were so fucking wrong lmao.
I guess it was an outdated belief going way back to classic RS.
It would have been completely true for all of 2001 though!
in the early days, after some months anyway.. everyone was aiming for typically using addy legs, plate, kite and Baxe " which i miss the aesthetics of" and then the rune med helm.
For sure, there is absolutely a difference between what we know as mathematically best today vs. what was wanted or even possible at the time.
I remember being a total knob back in the day and I'd do sessions with a friend of mine almost like in a sweatshop
just playing for hours and hours doing barrows in the most non-minmax way cuz we barely knew wtf we were doing
and then 2 items dropped including the guthans spear which was worth a crapload of money back then and the dharok chestpiece.
We were screaming like crazy haha
Im not sure if this is my memory failing me, but I couldve sworn that
Dragon plateskirt released later than platelegs
Rune and adamant boots didnt have a strength bonus on release
You are correct on both accounts.
after my previously mentioned setup we got to use the dragong bax, full rune " often chain for looks"and a dragon med for the pimps
The rune chain was also crucial for getting that bonus power from Steel or Klank's Gauntlets that couldn't be paired up with the plate body or plate mail top.
I think the first time i ever saw runescape, i was about 8 years old. Making the year 2004ish. I could not believe my best friend was playing such a real looking game. Took about a year after that before i was able to play at my own house on a the new computer my family got. The first skill i ever got to 99 was woodcutting, and id like to say it took about a year to do it. Couldnt grind/didnt have the patience i do now as an adult. Also, there was no profit doing it, either i didnt know how cause obviously noob, the GE didnt exist and or i was just lazy. Now 20 years later i started playing again this year and its still just as good if not better than i remember, now that im older can understand what's going on alot better. RuneScape really was my first video game love ❤️
Hams please make more vids this was awesome. Great work ❤
Thank you! The next one is very close to completion. Same spirit, different format.
You got linked in the World of Runescape discord (WoW merged with Runescape). Excellent video.
Great irony that my old videos from 15 years ago had dedicated haters paying me a visit from the WoW forums! Full circle. Looks like an awesome project by the way. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
this was a fuckin trip man good work.
Whitemagem been hitting rune bars on anvil too in classic.
great well put together video, subbed.
My journey didn't start until 2008 so i imagine those who were around in the early days think "damn things were different back in the day". This kind of stuff is cool to watch
I'm glad to hear it! The new series dropping here soon should be of great interest to you then. Stay tuned!
Great video! Are you gonna make videos for the other combat styles as well?
We did consider it and we might do so in a combined video later on, but trust me when I say melee gear is a much, much more interesting story.
@@HamOSRS Thank you for your reply! I'm eagerly awaiting your future content, keep up the great work!
This video was awesome! Will you make another from Old School moving forward? And even though I don't play it, and RS3 one would be neat just so I can see how that evolved too.
We weren't originally planning on making an Old School version but there has certainly been enough demand in the comments here to begin looking into it more seriously. It's surprisingly complex given all of the niche gear in the game.
For the split in the timeline after August 10, 2007 it would actually be considerably more difficult since most of that data up until EoC has been lost to time and EoC changed everything thereafter to a point that I never quite understood myself. I'm not against the idea of an RS3 timeline, but I also wouldn't be opposed if someone else more familiar with RS3 wanted to take the reins on that one.
@@HamOSRS Ah makes a lot of sense. Yeah you may want to break up the BIS into the 3 combat styles, that may help simplify it. And to tackle the horizontal progression items, you could mention them, but having the overall BIS (items most applicable to the most content rather than the new best Crush weapon and such) be the focus could help.
And gotcha regarding rs3, I don't blame ya haha. Maybe finding another content creator to collab with could help.
I wonder if Bluerose13x still plays...
