As someone who has been a Trekkie for over 50 years, welcome to the world of Star Trek. You watch the movies in whatever order you wish, the only downside is you are unfamiliar with the history of the characters. The newest 3 movies are a soft reboot of the series, meaning that they are an alternate timeline to the original. Which is why we have 2 Spocks in this movie. The older Spock is played by Leonard Nimoy, who was the original series Spock.
The original Star Trek was actually cancelled twice, after the 2nd season, but was renewed for a 3rd after a massive fan letter writing campaign, but was finally cancelled for good after the 3rd season. It was the unprecedented popularity of the original series in syndication that led to Star Wars being made and it was the unprecedented popularity of Star Wars that led to the original Star Trek movies gettting made. It was once said that Star Trek is science fiction and Star Wars is space opera.

The only thing that may not be clear to a new watcher that starts with this movie is that Old Spock is not just some older actor - that is the original Spock. Everything you are watching is in an alternate timeline (the Kelvin timeline) based on the fact that in the “real” Star Trek timeline, Old Spock disappears through the wormhole.

Vulcans and Romulans are/were essentially the same species. They are physically much stronger than Humans, and they have strong mental powers such as mind-melding.
Long ago, Vulcans were very emotional and violent, but they adopted the philosophy of logic and shunning of emotions in order to save themselves from self-extinction.
Romulans are the Vulcans who rejected Logic and kept their passions. They left the planet to form their own culture on Romulus. The Romulan Empire is rather cruel and territorial.

The "Kobayashi Maru" test - a no-win scenario - was designed to have cadets experience the horror of certain death. With no solution, no way to save themselves, the only thing to do was to die.
The test was a test of character: As a Starfleet officer, how will you react to certain death?
Of course, the test itself is a cheat. It was done in a simulation room, where there is no real threat of death. What the cadets experience in that simulation is NOT true fear. They know that it's just a test.

Funny thing about Olson, the skydiver who opens his parachute too late: Star Trek has spawned the term "red shirt" as a term for a character who is written to just get a name and a brief introduction whose sole purpose is to die early in the story to show the audience that the situation is dangerous. The name comes from the red uniform shirts Star Fleet subordinates usually have. When Olson dives, he is wearing a red outfit, and he only has a few minutes of screentime before he dies

So these films are actually set in their own timeline dubbed The Kelvin Timeline. An a alternate universe created when the Romulan Nero travelled to 2233 and destroyed the Federation starship U.S.S. Kelvin giving birth to a whole new timeline of events that branched off from the Prime Timeline, where everything pre Star Trek (2009) was set such as the Original Series and its films along with shows like Next Generation, Deep Space Nine etc.
The Original Star Trek series acts as inspiration for these films with Kirk, Spock, Scotty, McCoy, Uhura, Sulu, Pike, and Chekov all being characters from this show we're just seeing a whole new reimagine of this characters. The older Spock we see is played by Leonard Nimoy the actor who played Spock in the original series and it's films. This older Spock is from the Prime Timeline this being the only connection to anything past Star Trek so it's very much a reboot that in universe is exampled by being an alternate universe.

And then, in the new TV series, the poisonous planting of the seeds of grown people, officers of Starfleet, being unable to behave better than a teenager and, oddly, having the same reactions, views and relationships as present day young, Woke, Californians.
I did indeed watch the first season all the way through, despite the deliberate face slap of a black, female (probably gay :p) Spock stand-in. Spock taught me to rise above such petty provocations and I persevered :D But there was a growing realisation of how badly written it was for the setting it was supposed to be in.
Jason Isaacs got me that far, I have to say.
Now, maybe if it wasn't called Star Trek and supposed to *be* Star Trek, the likes of STD would be okay viewing. But, having pondered on the matter and wanting so much for it to be good, it wasn't for me.

31:52 - 32:26 Full explaination! Spock Prime (the name us fans gave him) shows James the future of his timeline. The timeline they're both in is called the Kelvin Timeline, named from the attack on the USS Kelvin in the beginning of the movie. In Spock Prime's timeline, James's father, George, lived. This timeline was, like I said, started when both Spock Prime and Nero were pulled into the black hole. Nero came out first, in turn starting the alternate timeline. Spock Prime went through last, years for Nero only seconds for Spock Prime. The supernova destroyed the Romulan homeworld, Romulus. All because his homeworld died, Nero made it his life's purpose to make a Romulus free of the Federation AKA mass genoside.
36:46 is my third favorite scene in the whole movie because Saturn is shown, while the viewers know this universe's Earth is in danger of being swallowed by a black hole LOL

I'm a Trekkie - I don't have the dedication to be a Trekker (superfan/"loremaster"), but I say, I love your reactions and do not care what order you watch the movies.
I would encourage watching at least some of the original series for some real, campy 1970s history of the franchise though.

Biss, there are a few MCU actors in this movie: Chris Hemsworth (George Kirk/Thor), Karl Urban (Leonard McCoy/Skurge), and Zoe Saldana (Nyota Uhura/Gamora).
You might want to watch the original Star Trek series (1966-1969). There are many reasons it retained and expanded its following over the last 50 years. Spawning multiple television series, two series of movies, and this reboot/alternative timeline. And why it remains embedded in pop culture. The Vulcan salute and "Live long and prosper" are known to many who are not Star Trek fans.

They don’t say it here, cuz it isn’t essential to know, but the Vulcans & Romulans were the same race. When a religion of ‘pure logic, suppress emotions’ took over, the vulcans who valued emotions and feeling things deeply left for another planet. They diverged in the thousands of years since. That is why both races are SO much stronger than humans. They weren’t super strong men, they are both of a race that is just stronger in general than humans are. They both age much slower than humans do as well. Most easily live to 200.
The old Spock here is the man who played Spock in the original series & the movies they made since. If you continue watching this trilogy can I please suggest an original series episode, and one movie? Because movie 2 is linked very closely to ‘The Wrath of Khan’ the second movie of the original series, & before that, the tv episode ‘space seed’ that is where they meet Khan & explains why he is angry for the movie later. What happens in those two shows has do many easter eggs & parallels that it isn’t even funny.

This film is probably the easiest film for new viewers to watch. Star Trek is primarily a TV franchise, and the movies have traditionally been sequels to the television episodes.
For instance, the first movie from 1979 and its five sequels expect the audience to know the characters from the 1966-1969 original series, and the 1994 film Star Trek Generations and its three sequels assume that the audience is very familiar with events in the 1987-1994 Next Generation series.
The 2009 movie and its sequels are full of references that fans of the TV shows will get, but they are far more accessible to audiences who are not showing up to see their favorite heroes on the big screen. If you want to check out the earlier films, your best approach would be to watch a handful of episodes first and then move on.

TBH you should watch TOS and the movies 1 through 6 to get the most from the JJ set but Start Trek is not so order dependent and the JJ set starts by reseting the timeline though time travel. My favorite Sci fi is Babylon Five but that it is essential to watch in release order and without missing shows because of a 5 year plus story arc. It has some time travel but it uses fixed loops and glimpses. With ST timetravel is explored with both changed and unchanged timelines even alternate universes to the point it stops making sense. Enjoy and explore more scifi but the older stuff is the best.

Actor William Shatner played the original 'Captain James Kirk' in the 'Star Trek' series in the 60's... he reprised the role in 1979 for the first 'Star Trek' movie and it's 5 sequels... He played 'James Kirk' for the last time in 1994 for the movie 'Star Trek: Generations'... which also saw him team up w/ 'Captain Picard' of the 80's series 'Star Trek: The next generation'.
(Late) Actor Leonard Nimoy became famous for his role as 'Spock' in the 60's 'Star Trek' series... He was not happy for a long time that he was equated w/ his fictional character, but he returned to the role of 'Spock' in 1979 as well for the 'Star Trek' movie... He last played 'Spock' in the 1991 movie 'Star Trek VI: The undiscovered country'...
This 'alternate timeline' Star Trek saw actor Leonard Nimoy appear for his 2nd-to-last appearance as 'Spock' (He did a cameo as 'Spock' for the next movie - 'Star Trek: Into darkness') before Nimoy passed away in 2015... Zachary Quinto took over the role as the young 'Spock'... Chris Pine took the role as a young 'James Kirk'... young actors also replaced the 'Enterprise' crew characters from the original 'Star Trek' series.
William Shatner has so far declined to appear as 'James Kirk' again.
'Star Trek' is basically depicting the missions of the exploration Starship, the USS Enterprise on behalf of the Federation to seek out new worlds ... The Federation is the union of intergalactic planets and civilizations that coexist in relative peace... The Klingon Empire is another entity that has come in direct conflict w/ the Federation... In 'Next Generation' series, there is another race of conquerors called the 'Borg' that are at odds w/ the Federation.
The Enterprise is an exploration starship w/ only limited weaponry and shielding for defense only... They are not authorized for warfare as a battle spaceship. Numerous ships have been constructed w/ the name 'Enterprise'... The original series had one design which was used in this movie; the 'Next Generation' Enterprise had a new, sleeker design.

This movie I like very very much and it certainly can be watch as the first star trek, but I think it relies heavily on the fact that you already know who the characters are and what they have been through in the old tv-series and movie. Well it most certrainly makes it a very different experience when this is the first introduction to the franchise. But enjoy.

Abrams Reboot series, and your reactions were precious as always! I look forward to you both continuing this series of films, and also hopefully going back to where it all started with Kirk Spock, Bones "McCoy", Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, & Scotty with the original series (which ran for 3 Seasons in the late 1960s, with an animated series considered as the 4th Season until 1975, followed by 6 modern Movies with the original cast in the late 1980s to mid 1990s)! The original series was followed by The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, Enterprise, Discovery, Strange New Worlds, Picard, and the animated series Lower Decks (which is both hilarious and cannon) & finally Prodigy...
You have just dipped your toe into a very vast, deep, and rich lake of wondrous lore and fascinating premises! Welcome milady... hope you enjoy swimming with the many varied (and hopefully) welcoming fishes! Now you know what this old EMOJI means... Live Long and Prosper!🖖😎
