@ 12:04 YES, exactly this. I was asking the wrong questions throughout the beginning/mid portions of the film… it took me an hour in before it all kind of came full circle for me.
Mahito’s descent into that world, the Heron being his guide - reminded me so much of Dante’s Inferno. Real powerful imagery too. The tower, the mage/wise old man… the entire thing felt so personal and symbolic heavy. I enjoyed it but the ending man… that ending was so bittersweet. It’s just as you say, Miyazaki is telling on himself and that level of introspection can only come from someone who has lived some time. Great film. It will definitely stick with me for a time.

I agree with you about the Dante piece, especially in relation to choice, but YES the symbolism. The golden gates for suuuure.
