This restoration was my greatest challenge to date.
Completely broken leg, scratches, dents, chipped veneer, this cabinet had it all. It also had a ton of modifications previously made to it in its past lives that I aimed to undo. My goal was to bring this piece back to its original function as a record cabinet.
I purchased a record player from Victrola, the same maker as this phonograph cabinet. It may not be as cool as the original crank-operated phonograph, but this is more practical for modern standards; it even has Bluetooth! I designed the whole inside based around the dimensions of the record player that I got, and although the process may look smooth and quick in the video, the multiple iterations of design had me digging through the deepest depths of my brain.

Thank you for watching :)

I've missed you.
Milanote looks fascinating, I'm signing up for it, thanks!
I find your creations incredibly beautiful. Cheers 😊
No joke I frickin love milanote. I found it when I was trying to find software that was easy to use for game development. You can add tons of types of media to it they give you I think 300 posts? For free. If you only use that much then swell but if you find you need more then you already know the program is useful.
Those ombré legs! Gah!! And when your cabinet landed on the moon, I let out a cheer and a small tear trickled down my cheek. Dude, you rocked this. 🤌
Some will say the cabinet landing was fake.
@@ModernMakeovers 😂
Stellar legs, for real!
@@ModernMakeoversmoon landing deniers!😡😆
@@ModernMakeovers cabinet landing was real, moon landing is not real.
The fact is that this piece of furniture was trash, beyond repair to most. The many hours you put in to this broken cabinet was a huge project. Thank you for taking this project on to an amazing level. Great video!
And the fact that it was so broken yet it somehow still cost C$75.
That's like 26 meals where I'm from
Please take a moment to appreciate how well organized is this guy's workshop
Applause!!!!!!
I love how your turned all the cabinet's biggest defects into it's best features, you truly are a skilled craftsman.
You are, without question, a Master woodworker, videographer, editor. I drop everything to watch your creations! Thankyou.
Ditto that!
There's so much to appreciate about repurposing a repurposed piece. Yet another life it'll go on to lead!
I just love your videos - they're interesting, relaxing, and full of sparks of personality.
If you repurpose twice, does that make it just... purposed?
@@ModernMakeoversOnly if you repurposed it on purpose. You did a beautiful job. Thank you,
I cackled out loud when the Skrillex wasn't Skrillex.🤣 You're so imaginative and talented. I love your channel because it's apparent how much you love what you do by the time and dedication you put into everything. I've seen other restoration videos where things are rushed through and done half-assed, as if they just want to be done with it. But not you. You're a perfectionist and I am too, so I really appreciate that about you. It turned out gorgeous, as always. ✌🏻
Thank you so much!!
Fading in the legs was a fantstic idea. Really makes the whole thing come together.
babe wake up, modern makeovers just dropped a new vid!
Love that no one touched that victrola logo after all the years and use.
I just love your videos : no useless/overwhelming music/blablabla ; just the sound of your labour and written explications. Awesome 👍😎🐕🦺🐈⬛
So glad you were able to save this cabinet. I love the cabrio legs. Please think about using dowels to strengthen the leg break instead of screws in future projects. The joint will last longer with wood and can expand and contract with moisture content. Thanks for your consideration. You're the professional and do a great job.
🤯 I don't know what blows me away the most... your woodworking skills, creativity or videography/editing, but man you're so good. When your vlog drops, I'm here. Thank you for sharing with us. 🙏 Pat/Yukon
The one thing I truly love about watching these types of videos is seeing the treasures that are out there and with all the work you do to find the best way to return it to good use. In this one not only restoring the leg with missing pieces but also restoring the doors to their original design among the things you accomplished. Then to also have the original name in basically perfect condition. Love, love, love the results. Thanks again for an amazing video.
It's a super rewarding feeling to look at the final product thinking "I did that", so I'm glad there's people like you who enjoy watching so I can continue to do it :)
@@ModernMakeovers I love the imagination you have to see what something can be. That while it's good to restore the great things about a piece, it's also fun to make changes that make it even more beautiful. The furniture available today is boring, usually made of horribly inferior materials and is ready to throw away in the trash in a few years. That's why the work you do is so important. It's beautiful, made to last for along time and very useful. I can't remember your name if you've ever given it. But thanks. I just wish I could buy some of your pieces. But I live in Mexico and the shipping is ridiculous. Thanks
@@teariana1 So true!
The dark stained legs blended out to the rest of the piece is something I've never seen done before, not only was it a great way to cover those repairs but it looks absolutely beautiful!
Andy, of all the projects I have watched you do, this one takes the cake for the complete restoration and elevation of a piece of furniture that seemed destined for a fire pit. It certainly was your greatest challenge yet! We knew that you were up to it!! Of course we did! But wow, no one could have predicted that you would meet the challenge and then smash it like this! You're the best!
THANK YOU 🥲🙏🏻❤️
The ombre on the legs - chef's kiss 😘
Thank you chef!
The ombre legs were an inspiration! I love it when a flaw leads to a stunning design choice you wouldn't have made, but for the flaw. Beautiful work, as ever.
What a fantastic tribute to a grand old lady. Now she brings joy once more. Was really surprised to see the water stain adhere after the Tung oil treatment. Great work all ‘round. 👏🏼🌟
Omg I love the legs. It’s a simple detail but it adds so much personality!
I see what you meant now… very creative 👌 nice work !
Thanks so much Jay :) ❤️
That drawer transition was A1 omg
😛
Greatest challenge, but I think your most impressive piece. Blending the dark legs into the lighter body works SO much better than I think the stark contrast between them would have. Very glad you kept so much original, especially the inner lid. And what great luck that it's still holding a Victrola player!
Beautiful job! My uncle worked and retired from RCA in Camden, NJ years ago. I believe the original stained glass image of Nipper- "His Masters Voice" is in the Smithsonian. They turn the building into condos, and replaced the stained glass with a full size replica in acrylic. Thank you for sharing your hard work...
Wow, I love the blended legs!! It's so unique and striking. I love how it really merges the "old" of the record player with the "new" modern look.
I never knew I wanted ombre legs on furniture legs before! what a gorgeous journey to return a piece to its original glory! lovely!
As soon I noticed the broken leg, I wondered how in the world you were going to fix it...
All I can say is that I am simply mesmerized. The legs deserve their own video. 😄
Not in a million years I would have repaired them to perfection. Not to mention the blending technique took the restoration to the next level. Absolutely beautiful.
Nicely done, it was a pleasure to watch. 🤩
Thank you :) 🫶
This turned out so incredibly stunning and your editing always makes me chuckle. You’re my favourite furniture restorer on CZcams!
Mine too, I love his sense of humor also.
Man, I love this channel. I wish more CZcamsrs would stop babbling and just DO. Plus, your edits are funny as hell.
Not only is it beautiful, the memes and editing made me laugh out loud each time 😂 perfect all around!
It's a masterpiece!!! The blending on the legs is stunning!
Watching a master craftsman turn firewood into a work of art restores a sense of civility and humanity. As the world descends back into beasts fighting over a carcass, your work reminds us of how much better we can be.
Another phenomenal transformation, and lesson on how to repurpose everything. Thank you for sharing this with us.
The comparison of the broken leg to Michael Jackson killed me!!! 🤣🤣 You are so good at restoring and repurposing furniture, and, you have a great sense of humor. My guess is that the speakers will go in the cabinet below the turntable?
Speakers could go down there, yes! But I'm just going to use the built in speakers for a crappier sound quality, because ~vintage~
Oh! Didn't know there were built-ins. Love your reasoning. Get some old records from the 30"s - 50"s.@@ModernMakeovers
@@ModernMakeoverswho says vintage speakers were crappy? They were likely perfect
The before / after is really really impressive 🤩👍
Blown away once again! Almost everyone would walk right by that piece and feel bad that it was wreaked, but not you! Thank you for taking such care when restoring your pieces. Your talent and creativity are so inspiring! I'm especially grateful that I get to watch your videos.
Amazing! My fav part was the ombre effect of stain - a masterpiece! Well done!
Your work is always most impressive but this time you have excelled yourself. My sincere congratulations on such a super piece of restoration. Thanks so much.
I appreciate you!!
14:05 those magazine bits get me every single time
Love the umbre stain technique! Really lovely. Well done!
Watching your videos is like reading a good mystery. It's all I can do to stop myself from going to the last chapter before I see all the steps.
It's absolutely fantastic. Each of your videos is hypnotizing and leads to a wonderful discovery. Thank you very much and Big hugs from France 😇
Thanks so much, hugs from Canada :)
THIS is the all time favorite video of my entire CZcams watching history. I'm broken in a good way. 🧡🌻🧡
Do you need a modern makeover?!
@@ModernMakeovers hahaha 😄😄
Me too! Utterly magnificent!
Incredible craftsmanship ... I'm about to attempt my first restoration of a small Victorian side table, your video has definitely given me extra motivation... Thank you Sir from 🇬🇧🤝
Best of luck 🤝
I absolutely love the fade from dark oak to tung oil. Your videos are just like your furniture: brilliant, creative, and one-of-a-kind ❤
Thank you very much!
You are my favorite favorite makeover masters on CZcams
You did it again! Fantastic and sympathetic to its original use.🎉
Such happiness seeing this beautiful piece being reborn, saved from a sad fate, pure art!! 😊
Thank you for this restoration to be close to the original. When I saw that Victrola stamp/decal thing, I was hopeful you would keep it - and you did! That is an awesome prize of a cabinet, and now it has a record player in again. I'm sure it is happy now. ;)
Beautiful and amazing as always!! I love that you are a “wood pack rat “. You are so skillful at reusing and repurposing bits of everything. Thanks for sharing your talent.
I just like to save money 🥸 I'm sure the environment doesn't mind either.
I love watching you bring disasters back to life! Beautifully done, as usual! ❤
Really great restoration! Nice that you got a Victrola record player to go with the cabinet ^_^
It is truly another level of artistry. Production value and humor are greatly appreciated. 😊
I always get excited when i get a notification saying you uploaded
it's absolutely stunning. i think this is your best work.
This was beyond a *rough* piece and you worked your magic and turned it into a GORGEOUS treasure! You're super talented Andy and thanks for sharing with all of us. You inspire! 😊
Thank you so much!
Watched this twice last night before heading to bed and again now. So inspirational! I have two phonograph cabinets waiting to be restored/repurposed. Can’t to get started!
Love everything you do!
Your videos and your projects are probably the best out there! ❤
I am just speechless, Andy. What a magnificent transformation.
Great work!!! You have given new life to a wonderful item! Well done master!!!👋👋👋
I actually liked seeing the scars from the repair on the leg, but that stain blending is gorgeous!
You are so creative and have such great ideas for making these sad pieces beautiful again. Absolutely stunning work on this one.
Can’t believe the transformation. Stunning. Why did you not stain or oil the inside? The legs look fantastic with the ombré fade. So pleased to wake up to an Andy makeover. 😊
I thought about it, but decided it looked alright being left in its light tone. Ask me next week though..
I have to say you certainly rose to the challenge with this one. I love your vision for restoring and you sense of humour too...
Blimey, that’s absolutely beautiful 😍. Your skill is amazing Andy, I never realised that I even liked furniture makeovers until you came along in my recs last Spring, but now you’re compulsive viewing and when you drop a new video I stop whatever I’m doing and come straight over to watch you. You are awesome. I also love the speeded up asmr sounds of you hammering and sanding etc (keyboard clicks😁), idk why but they always make me laugh.
Oh my looooorrrrd, this is so gorgeous and you really gave the old Phonograph cabinet some new life. Truly fantastic looking stuff!
Beautiful job, Andy. Superb.
The Victoria looks good as new, given a second life. Nice job.
Another stunning restoration! Thank you AGAIN for sharing your talent with us. This one…HOW? No words….
Andy, I'm running out of superlatives for your videos. Awesome job! When I first saw what you'd chosen from that selling page, I thought, "It's Andy. Of course he can and it *will* look fabulous. Have faith." And I was right. 🙌🎉
Thank you for the lovely wake up call, too. Good morning from the Somerset coast, UK ❤
I'll try my best to keep up with that expectation 😂 Thanks so much :)
I think this might be your best one yet! In my opinion that is. All of your skill is clearly displayed. Love the fade on the legs.
I will gladly take that opinion 😍
Among your many incredible talents, is the ability to see beneath the scars and damages of life to find and restore beauty. Thank you for sharing your vision and skill.
I’ve come to really love watching your videos, and I get excited when I see familiar sights: the stain sock, the jars of metal fixings, mixing a paste on top of a well lit magazine… Your woodworking skills and video editing are excellent and always entertaining. I hope you’re enjoying your new record stand 🩷
Thank you for rescuing this old phonograph. To restore it back to it's original use, well almost, is a wonderful thing. I prefer the pieces where you are just staining the furniture, instead of spray lacquering them. The stains bring out the character of the wood. Well done!
A new video!??? I’m just gonna pretend this was a birthday present to me and not just a coincidence 🤭. Love when you work on vintage pieces! This was SO satisfying. I’m sure undoing all those mods was a pain but the results were worth it for sure 😍
Happy birthday Mikayla, hope you like your gift :)
you even preserved the victola graphic. excellent work. I have a deep admiration for your skills.
Well! Bravo, beautiful job. 👍 I love that you use leftover bits and pieces for your projects. It feels good to know those things aren't wasted in a fire or garbage dump. Two thumbs up indeed. 👍👍😊
I watch your videos as much for the editing skills as the restorations. Both are top notch.
Best restoration you have done yet by far congrats
Very impressive and I mean your filming as well. Very creative. The James Bond clip made me laugh out loud. What you do well goes beyond beautiful furniture restoration.
Andy, this is a level above and beyond any makeover I have ever seen on CZcams. The cabinet now looks terrific, especially the repaired ombre leg is shockingly beautiful.
This is the closest to upload I've ever seen one of your videos, looking forward to being one of the first to watch it!
High five!
don't leave me hangin
@@ModernMakeovers *slaps hand* Sorry it was super late for me fell asleep right after the reveal :)
Andy as always the end result is spectacular. Well done.
What a labor of love! Beautifully done.❤️
One of the reasons I like to watch your videos is to get inspired to make/create with care and deliberation, the way that you work. I don't do carpentry or woodworking but the importance of "slowing down" and making with thoughtfulness is important to me. Thank you!!
Wow, thank you!
That is just magic mate you are such a talent
Love your work!
You humble me with your attention to detail and abundance of creativity for repair. The example for order that you show inspire the rest of us to integrate it to our own Vocation and Avocation.
Thank you
Magnificent. Absolutely lovely.
I have ADHD and I usually watch CZcams videos while I’m waiting for my meds to kick in before I can get to work. Your videos are so entertaining I don’t even have to do anything else (usually meaningless games on my phone) while watching them to keep my attention. I hope you realize I mean this as a huge compliment lol. Amazing work!
Thank you so much for your compliment 😊❤️
Andy, this really was a challenge but you always come through with a beautiful surprise
Hope you had fun editing the video because it is so much fun to watch! Btw, that leg fade, marvellous!
Stunning work! Thank you again for sharing your amazing talent with us all.
outstanding. your attention to detail is enviable.
I always get so excited whenever I see you post! I never once felt disappointed in the end- your creations always end up looking so cool and luxurious!❤
Beautiful restoration. I’m glad you’re actually using it for its intended purpose. Always wanted something like this for my record player too!
Beautiful! There is something so satisfying about watching a craftsman work!!! Thanks for posting, blessings.
The title is your greatest challenge yet...but I say it is your greatest masterpiece yet!💜💜💜💜 Please continue to share your talent as I almost gave up on refinishing. You gave me hope that it can be done and beauty is different in each piece. Thank you so much for sharing ! God bless you!🎉🎉🎉🥰
Omg so soon ! I love seeing when you’ve got a new upload, it’s always so well done
Love what you did for this little lady. She is a happy lady now. you can hear it in the music.
Until maybe I put in a Radiohead record or something
@@ModernMakeovers never play nickelback. she’ll have ptsd.
This is a beautiful cabinet. My Grandparents had one of these, but it had been converted to a sewing cabinet by Grandpa for Grandma. At any rate, just a suggestion for the front doors on this project... You might have considered cutting new pieces of Red Oak and staining them close to the Mahogany Veneer, or using Birds Eye Maple an building a pair of Contrasting front doors. The last choice, would have been my personal... would be some Red Manzanita, this gives you the red of the Mahogany but the Bird's Eye look of Maple. For the top, I am very glad that water scar came out. I have repaired those by sanding, then glue-sizing the wood.
At any rate, beautiful project. Just beautiful. and... Yes Tung Oil is my favorite wood finish too. Just beautiful!!!
