He didn't have much of a chance for 6 of those years, that barca team(not including messi) was already the best team in the world, player for player they were better than any other team and had many years of experience playing together. Only when xavi left did they lose their overwhelming advantage in the midfield. To be fair i don't think he lost to him personally, he won 4 ucls and several ballon d'or. If he stayed in Madrid he would have won several more trophies and another 1 or 2 ballon d'or.
