I adore De Leon's writings, summa bene! Donna is a genius with language that describes the human mind. Good on her.

I had never enjoyed detective novels before, but, when I picked up THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY at Panthip Plaza in the downstairs donation mini library, I really enjoyed it and learnt so much about Venice, as well as police work, Italian food, European Union regulations, environmental issues, and glassmaking. Also a good portrayal of the issues involved when environmental regulations intersect with labour issues and impact small businesses, and are implemented in such a way to burden small businesses more than big businesses, even when the big businesses cause more environmental damage! So it's great to see this interview and learn more about the fascinating writer also! The story about how all the novels came about is very interesting, as well as her life, which I can identify with, as someone who has also lived in 7 countries teaching English and volunteering with NGOs. I also like Commissario Brunetti and his happy family, and the characters just come alive!
Many things about Venice, including the values and people, seem to be similar to Chiang Mai, where I've lived for the past 10 years. Not just being tourist cities, but things she mentioned in the video, like being exposed to the weather, not having air conditioning in many places, people walking around (I walk everywhere!) and seeing everything, reserved residident, and the value put on good food, art, and having a good time. So different from the values in the U.S. where I grew up (except in a few places like New York) and in other Asian developing countries. It was interesting to hear about the difference between people in Northern and Southern Italy...just about every country seems to have some difference in the people between the North and South, including the U.S., India, and Thailand. Like Venice, Chiang Mai has many structures that date back nearly a 1000 years and many traditional art forms and handicrafts that have been pursued continually since that time.

With the imminent withdrawal of MHz network from the broadcasting universe, I my wife and I find ourselves at a loss. Brunetti (the series), and the woman behind it (the books), have brought immense pleasure into our world. Thank you for posting this; it will suffice to remind us of how very illuminating and utterly delightful Ms Leon (nom de plume) is until such time as we can lay hands on her next novel--due March 2020.

This is actually pretty funny to me personally because I met her on the Frankfurt book fair couple of years ago. And she is wonderful, let me tell you. She has a marvelous sense of humor and is unbelievably informed about almost anything. I'm pretty sure you could walk up to her in Venice and ask her what she thinks of call of duty [just an example] and she would tell you her honest opinion, giving you enough information to write at least two books in the process.

I believe you. She seems very real and honest. Her voice has that ability to soothe and her written works gives the ability to transport us.

I didn't know her either until my dad introduced me to her books...I think it's because she never signed the rights for the book to be translated in italian, so they're not really popular in Italy...and that'a a shame...

@@aria0998 she did not want her books to be translated in italian, because she said she did not want to be famous in italy, she just want to be like one of us moving amoung the public.

@@Gojiberry631 Yeah That makes a lot of sense, but also I think she wanted to be free to talk about Italy and italian politics and situation, without it being too much of a problem.
