Diesel Engine में Petrol से ज़्यादा Torque क्यों? | ICN Explains

  • We all know that diesel engines produce more torque than petrol engines, and thus are used in bigger and heavier vehicles. In this video we explain two main reasons (compression ratio and faster combustion) behind this. Do let us know in case we missed out on anything, we'll try and answer that asap.

    The way of explaination is so good. Your voice and actions keeps the viewers engaged.
    But I expected more technicality as I am an Automotive Engineering grad.
    The first point you mentioned is absolutely true but it should have been carry forwarded. Due to high compression ratio, the piston in Diesel engine has to move more as compared to Petrol engine of same capacity.
    This movement is compensated by a longer arm which connects the Piston and crankshaft.
    And as you know Torque= Force * Arm length.
    Even if you generate same force, The diesel has longer arm which accounts for more Torque.
    Also , due to more energy density the force produced by burning of Diesel is also more than Petrol.
    In short.
    Torque produced is more in Diesel engine of same capacity.
    But the Power is more in Petrol Engine. Because of shorter arm length which makes the Crankshaft to complete one rotation much faster than in longer armed Diesel Engine.
    Power = T * Rpm
    Since Rpm is higher in petrol it gives more power.

      So, if a petrol car is producing 82 bhp and diesel producing 100 bhp, should it be equal in performance? Please guide

    Great video 👍
    One more reason for more torque is that diesel has more complex hydrocarbon compounds per unit volume as compared to petrol, because of which on combustion it produces more volume of combustion gases, resulting in more thrust.

    Another point : Calorific value of diesel is more than petrol, that is more energy is produced by burning diesel as compared to energy produced by burning same amount of petrol.
