  • It was our hope that the release of this mini-doco, “A Tale of Four Surfboards”, starring last year’s US Open champ, would coincide with back-to-back wins at home for Kanoa Igarashi.
And it did! And he celebrated. Hard.
Over the past months, we’ve been putting together this US Open Retrospective. We called the boys at Channel Islands and had remakes of Tom Curren’s Red Beauty (which was painted black), the boards of Kelly Slater and Shane Beschen from the ’94 final and the infamous interference call of the ’96 final, and the board Andy Irons did that massive floater on back in ’09.
We visited Al and Britt Merrick at their ranch in Ojai. We discussed the interference of ’96 with Mr. Beschen - who lost to Slater in a freak paddling incident. We uncovered that the Andy Irons floater board was actually made for Julian Wilson(!)… until Andy walked into the CI shop and decided it was his. And we revisited the silky transition of an original master of style.
Come for Tom, Kelly, Shane and Andy; stay for your US Open Champ's recount and hifi surfing on four boards in classic Huntington slop.
The idea was to dive into the past, and honey, nostalgia is one hell of drug.
    Go ahead, hit the triangle.

What a great concept for this video. Really enjoyed it. Would humbly suggest a part where Kanoa gives his thoughts about each board after he rides them. I mean, he's killing it on each board, but would still be cool to hear him say what he felt, liked, disliked, etc. Regardless, thanks Stab!

Thank you so much for bringing up the fact that Tom Curran never did the Huntington hop. he knew how to keep speed by transitioning from rail to rail and he did it with style so that just goes to show you kids don't hop there's no reason for it especially on these hybrid fishes.

Good idea ruined - as others have said: you need the surfer to comment on how the boards surf for this to make better sense. How do they go? The rockered skinny boards versus the fat Curren model. And how was surfing changing with the boards? in the pocket versus out on the face. Lost opportunity ...

Kid is such a kook, CI does all of this for him and made sure he had the best boards for so many years and then he decides to switch to sharp eye. All of this after deciding to surf for Japan while living and growing up in the U.S. . Doesn't seem so humble or grateful for everything that got him where he is. Ya he can surf but show some respect for the major things that made it possible to even surf at the level and financial freedom he was given.

Why do Americans are always so butthurt when it comes to patriotism? He chose Japan exactly because he recognises his roots and is humble enough to embrace his background even knowing Japan isn't as "famous" in surfing compared to the US. Don't criticise him for being himself man, be better than this.

Bruno Vasconcelos it has nothing to do with patriotism, it has to do with respecting where you came from and what got you there.

This absolutely sucked. There is no commentary on the boards, how he'd compare them to what he rides today, reflections on the way their original owners surfed them, nothing the least bit engaging. Stab really fell short here. It could be fixed. Interview Kanoa again and add it to this.

So.glad I found a beautiful.calm.and humble Nepali girl..been together ten years now..She is so humble, calm and loveable, that she gets everything she wants by just being an honest soul.

Man I am REALLY sick of that song. Stab and Surfer have used it in so many vids now that the off key note makes me clench my jaw from cringing so hard. FIND A NEW CRAP SONG THAT YOU GUYS DON’T HAVE TO PAY ROYALTIES ON @stabmag @Surfer!

Love stab, but please please please Mike C. or ask him to stop whining about Trump. If I was interested in reading shit written by a whiny liberal who links everything to politics and has trump derrangement syndrome I would read the NYT. But I'm not, so I don't. And I'm not even a Trump guy, but I like Mike and Stab less every time they needlessly insert politics into surfing.
