  • Amongst the most uncompromising acts ever to appear on the British music scene, Gallon Drunk burst into life in the early nineties and quickly became the band you absolutely had to see. Signed to Clawfist they became an instant indie chart success with all their early releases going top ten and being voted single of the week in either NME or Melody Maker. But it was on stage that Gallon Drunk really ruled the roost, their no-prisoners approach to live performance often verged on the theatrical yet never ever dismissed its punk, funk rock n roll roots.
This programme was filmed just before Christmas 1991 at Happy Jax in London and is amongst the most visceral performances ever recorded by legendary punk film-makers Jettisoundz. A night of chaos and beauty this is an archetypal Gallon Drunk show that demonstrates exactly why singer, songwriter and musician James Johnson became one of the most respected and sort after artists on the alternative music scene, working with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and composing soundtracks for movies. Above all though this is out and out dangerous, messy, fun and, I have to say, a fine document of one of the most exiting and inspiring gigs I have ever been privileged to work at. They might turn the stage into a rubbish dump but I challenge anyone not to watch this without feeling exhilarated.
