#MacMini #MacMini2018 #Review - Věda a technologie
My main issue is the starting price of the new MacMini. 800$ starting is an absurd price. If they had kept it at 500, or even a small bump to 600 starting, it'd be a lot more reasonable.
An "after 30 days" review needs to more than specs and use cases. You mention nothing about actual workload handling OR the thermal throttling issues on the new Mini.
If I could afford one, I'd buy this, I love the seamless and sleek design and that it doesn't use up space.
good video. few points....
-use case; i sold my 5k imac and purchased the i7 6 core 512gb (and upgraded the ram to 32gb and added a 1TB external SSD), i plan to add an egpu (sonnet with a rx580, about $400 on amazon) and a 27" dell UHD (retina) monitor. This makes it one of the fastest macs around and since most people will out grow the gpu before the 6 core i7 this will be future proof for years.
-pricing; your comparison is actually off... you compared the mini with 64gb ram and 2tb ssd to the imac pro 32gb and 1tb, if those options were equal the mini is way less (even with an egpu) its still less.
thanks.
I got one for my wife when it launched to replace a 2008 Dell XPS i7. She uses it for web browsing, iTunes, email, and watching CZcams videos. It's certainly overkill for her needs but it means that I don't have to provide tech support. I wouldn't mind one of these for myself as a home desktop. I currently use a 2014 rMBP 15 as my home desktop and it would be nice avoiding plugging stuff in at home. I can't really justify getting another system though.
THanks for the review. I have heard that the mac mini has had issues with overheating. Did you experience this at all? I want to use the mini for music production, and drive the system hard. Do you think this will be an issue?
Which Monitor is it? It is totally matching with the Mac. I love it!
Thanks for the review ! How about heating ? And also which would be the least expensive gpu ?
I've just bought the 2018 Mac mini for audio use in a pro studio. It is replacing a 27" iMac which is a PITA because it cannot be put in a server room and the fans spin up from time to time just when you do not want them to (like when you are mixing). I'm putting 32GB RAM in it and it will have a 1TB eternal SSD to be paired with 8TB of TB3 RAID 5. I don't need an EGPU, I just need a box that can be put out of the control room and a separate mouse/monitor/keyboard. It is out for delivery today. WHOOHOO!
James Richmond so how do you like it thus far for Production/Mixing?
Also interested to hear how you're getting on with it. How quiet is it in practice?
@@PeakDistrictBouldering it is dead silent. Super powerful for audio. I don't use it for video editing. (replying from my other account). James.
one of the best purchases of my life, I am serious! I love apple, so I am a fanboy. But I have never used their desktop computers, because I wasn't satisfied with them. Now I bought this small guy and I am impressed! for the things I do (mainly working or creating presentations, casual gaming) it works just fine. Thermal throttling is not a problem while gaming since you can adjust the speed of the fans. So if you start doing intense stuff, just let the fans spin on maximum speed and you won't go higher than 50 degrees
Sweet video. I just ordered a Mac Mini i5 to replace my 2012 iMac. I’m so excited! I’ve had my iMac since 2013 and it’s still working great.
I used a Mac Mini throughout college and post grad life(6 years). Recently, I upgraded to a 2018 Air. The Mini was a great "home" computer for someone that prefers Mac OS like I do. HOWEVER, this is not what you want if you see yourself taking it on the go regularly. I constantly shlepped my Mini around for years, packing/unpacking, connecting bluetooth etc. You are much better off spending the extra money for the Air or Pro if you are commuting.
Hey! Thanks for the review. Would you say that the Mac mini would be recommended for iOS app development?
I employee 2 iOS developers and am looking for a better computer for them.
Again an other nice review. And I love the redesign you gave to the channel. Love your wood look for the B-roll.
Awesomely informative .. Would the mac mini be powerful enough to watch a movie, with for instance something like plexapp, on a 4K tv?
Thank you! Seriously, great run down and you answered a lot of questions i had about it. Still, you digging it overall?
Very good review as always, keep it up! I have a question about this Mac Mini config: i7 version, 8 GB, 256 GB - is this enough for developing complete iOS/Mac apps and also for full stack development? I have my own decent peripherals.
You are doing a great job on your channel... thanks for this update. I am using it but like others having some issue with Bluetooth.
Nice review. Watching this on my 2010 Mac mini (8GB) that is hooked to HD TV. Apple wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse. Still works great as an entertainment and surfing machine and occasional word processor. Would love one of the new ones, but hey my old one only cost $100 (used) lol.
Sick video!!!!!!!! Nice into, nice throwback!!!!! Best channel ever!!!!
Thanks! 🙏
I bought a refurbished Mac mini from Apple around 3 years ago and I’ve never had a single problem with it. It’s now beginning to show it’s age - only because of the low amount of ram, otherwise it’s still very usable. I originally wanted a MacBook Pro but could never save up enough cash for it (household issues like broken washing machine, or needing new wallpaper etc).
In the end I decided on the mini because it was the next best thing to a laptop and the price was ridiculously low. They are great little machines and I would recommend them to anyone.
Wow, have been looking for that, how to set a Mac mini as a server for video editing?
Take serious questions to Quora. YT is a views game.
First off, I love your videos! Great work man! Ten thumbs up (metaphorically) !
Can you give us anything about the thermals and how this thing throttles?
I'm torn between this and a nice screen, or a macbook pro vega 20. But if this thing throttles bad, I might skip it.
Once again, love love your videos and I'm so happy I found your channel!
I love your new intro style!
very good review. video is edited wonderfully as always. keep up the good work
I understood your observe about GPU, but still, I don't understand why Vega 64 is slower than MBP 15.
I just ordered the I7. Going to use it for music production. I hear a lot of people use it as such. I do not do any video editing so the weaker graphic performance will hopefully not be an issue.
This is perfect for people who make music for a living (like myself). Been waiting for something like this forever because I don't need or care about a GPUs or 5K displays etc. It just jacked the price up (ie.iMac Pro) for me. Stoked about this.
Has been great for music and glad it connects to my 4k monitor without getting hot, my 2013 15" MacBook pro with dedicated GPU would get super hot just watching videos on 4k display
I live in South Africa, you have no idea how expensive the Mac Mini is here due to the weakness of our currency. I use my old one as a desktop and I love the way it works. I chose this over the iMac as I wanted/needed two screens. I was excitedly waiting for the upgrade alas at the price point...I guess I'm staying with my 2013 model.
All I wanted was something that was faster and more internal storage!
I love my new Mac mini and plan to get the Razer eGPU down the road.
what monitor are you using in the showcase? I love it
I had a MacBook pro once. I kept using it more at home at my desk. (With monitor, keyboard and mouse). I needed an upgrade. Because core 2 duo wasnt to work with anymore. So the Mac mini was perfect for me!
I'm sorry for my stupid question, but what's the purpose of connecting a macbook to a mac mini? Do you get better readspeeds of you NAS or whats the deal?
Do you think the mac mini is a good pc for connecting it to a 4k 55" TV for browsing the web, watching youtube and movies from iTunes or is it to week because of the crappy integrated GPU?
can you do a video, setting it up and using it as server?
I use my old MacBook Pro 2011 in clamshell mode with a 1080p monitor, keyboard and mouse. I believe this will be a great upgrade for me.
What do you use as Mac backup ? Time capsule is gone now can you recommend a wireless HD ?
HDD connected to my router (AirPort Extreme). But you can use any router that supports Time Machine Backups.
Thanks
I miss the G4 Cube. Kinda hoping the MacPro is a NeXT Cube like cube, (although it’s not a very efficient shape). About the size of the Mac Mini, I’m very happy Apple kept the size. The Mac Mini is in a market that requires rack mounting. So consistent sizes are necessary. Not only that but it allows for much better cooling options. It’s a great system, especially if you buy 3rd party memory obviously.
Will it run 3 4k monitors at 1080p smoothly. use it for coding and general stuff no video editing ?
These vids are so well made. Glad I subbed.
At 7:27 - have you tested the mbp 15" with the egpu as well? If so - what was the export time?
i7 version and 512GB of storage. Upgraded RAM to 32GB and connected a Razer Core X and a RX 580 8GB. The main use will be mainly graphic intensive work, writing, and some light gaming when there is enough free time! I know its an overkill, but it is supposed to run smoothly even in some years from now!
I just got the 2018 Mac Mini i-5 w/8G and 256G SSD. I am using it with an Acer 23" 1080P monitor, Matching Apple Keyboard and Logitech M570 mouse. My primary goal is Development. I will be using Crucial to upgrade to 32G of RAM in the future. So far, it is working great. I almost got the Macbook Pro 13" w/tb, 16G RAM and 256G SSD. However, while at the Apple store, I noticed all their machines were using around 100G of disk. When asked about that, I was told if disk space is going to be an issue, get a larger SSD. Long story short, I discovered out of the box, OSX Mojave takes 21G (which was around what I expected).
awesome review
Not a Apple fan mostly but love Mac's. Got this Mac mini (i7) as Mac Server and it's awesome, got it attached to my NAS Drive and can access all the files from anywhere. i7 May be a bit overkill but I want to keep it for a while and will eventually put 32GB of RAM later on and a EGPU. One of the best products apple sell imo along with the iPad.
I got mine which has i7/16/256 two weeks ago, but returned it three days ago and decided to go with MacBook pro...not that it's not good though. I love the design and great proformance, but I need some portability.
Thanks for the fabulous review!
What do you think of Apple's external GPU ?
try an rx580 smaller box.
Thank you for that. I didn't realize you lost speed with an eGPU on a full speed TB port. I thought that was only on ports that were half speed, due to a lack of PCI-e lanes from the CPU. That makes eGPU's a much less attractive option than I once thought. Great video.
eGPU on a Mac Mini makes no sense to me.
It will be great if this Mac mini can be power by USB C like MacBook Pro, like using LG 4k/5k display ?
Great video. You're very knowledgeable but can we slow down a bit and talk about the upgradablility of this jewel? Can the i3 CPU be upgraded to i5 or i7 8700 as on PC's or did Apple try to make that impossible? What about internal or external bootable drives? M.2 NVMe? How many bays internal and/or can you set up externals? Can you set up a bootable external NVMe if no internal NVMe? What type of ram does it use and what speed? Are there limitation on the brand of Graphic cards it will run well with? What external graphic card enclosures are there, just one? Is it possible to adapt usb3 for wired apple keyboards etc or do you have to use wireless keyboards and mice? What type of speaker ports? Any help here would be appreciated. I'm an old Mac user that gave up and been running Hackintosh : ( . Big thanks!
Thank you very much and can you please do more information on the server as I’m really interested in that please
So for Final Cut Pro video editing for basic CZcams vids, will the lack of GPU be a big factor? I'm a musician and am doing mostly simple music videos or gear reviews...
Hey, My dilemma is, Mac Mini + eGPU or Macbook Pro 15"? for video editing and After Effect
Good review and I like how you've provided alternatives for accessories and such. I love my black Logitech Solar Mac keyboard... But they only sell the silver one now. :-(
Yes, looking at benchmarks, the Mac mini is seriously impressive on the high-end configuration spectrum. I was thinking of using it as an iMac Pro alternative... But you are right, it can be more expensive than the iMac Pro and you would lose performance to it as well. But at least you can build up to that performance level rather than pay for it all at once. And you'll have a machine that's more tailored for yourself as well.
Are these minis upgradable?
thanks. great review
I think this is a more attractive product than the 2018 Macbook Air by far and you don't have to worry about a failing keyboard and a dimly lit screen. Apple should sell a lot of these. Good video.
Great for music production.
The 2018 mac mini is more powerful than the 2014?I would hope so.
Eh, quite a bold claim you make there at 07:40 You have the base i3 model and you claim the top of the line mini 2018 would still be slower with the egpu compared to the mbp. Any proof of that?
Trusteft I was curious about this too. so far he is the only one who claims this. Are you sure that i7 mac mini with vega64 egpu will be slower than i9 vega20 mbp?
I don't know how much of a bottleneck the TB3 connection will be...but let's not forget the throttling that takes place on the laptops which lowers performance after a while. Regardless, not testing any such system and just making a bold claim is for me...wrong.
Doesn’t the i7 do its video rendering stuff on the cpu, making discrete graphics moot? I remember reading that but idk I’m not a video guy.
Gotta love it when ppl bias a comparison to make a point, which in turn renders the point MOOT since you BIASED the COMPARISON! 😂😂😂
How can you compare the iMac Pro price to the Mac Mini price fairly when you fail to match the specs of the Mini to the iMac Pros 1TB SSD and 32GB RAM, which amounts to $1600 USD LESS than your lopsided comparison. That’s substantial!
The rest of the video was good, so why devalue it with such a petty comparison right at the end? And despite stating that you’re keeping yours you fail to conclude whom this would be suitable for! Like oh I dunno, ppl whom don’t require a powerful GPU maybe?
🤦🏻♂️
The Mac mini makes most sense for software developers, specifically for apps, using a Windows or Linux machine and connecting remotely. There are other appliances of course, one of which are servers, thanks to exceptionally good network reliability of all Macs.
Video tutorial for setting up a server please. Cheers Daniel
I am a film tv composer and only need Logic Pro X. You think the i5 or i7 mac mini works with ram upgrade? I don't feel like paying the fine monitor of the iMac Pro. I just need it for creating music. Thanks!
audio people dont need a good gpu, so its pretty dope for that
Jaime Mejia - Yea man. Seems fantastic for a less expensive Logic Pro X machine.
Sodtware engineers and designers dont need it either!
@Jaime Meja, and a lot of audio people prefer Logic Pro.
I used Logic X Pro..and I am looking to upgrade from my old iMAC 2013...If I go for the high spec mini mac it might be a good choice...I don't do video...just audio...that do you think?@@kalijasin
Jaime Mejia or iOS app developers. unless youre making iOS games but thats a different story.
would you recommend this to edit with photoshop and lightroom?
Please make a video about how you used your Mac mini
Finally. Someone on CZcams that actually says their years correctly
Great review
Huge thanks bro, ur the best.
What BenQ monitor is it? Looks like Space grey by Apple, i want it!
I have the 2018 Mac mini, LG 4K HDR monitor, Magic keyboard 2, Magic Trackpad 2, Razor Abyssus(2014) and a crazy sound system(SMSL AD18 amp, Wharfedale D10 subwoofer and a pair of Micca MB42x).... but no eGPU lol...
Terrificten by any chance do you know if the base line Mac mini would be good for editing on Lightroom?
I honestly don’t know... sorry bout that
Mine is the 6 core Intel i7 processor... It does photo editing pretty well... a bit slow for video editing or gaming but it’s okay(no eGPU)...
I like to use my i5 refurb Mac mini as my main computer. It is stronger than a 13" MBP and a lot cheaper. I got a good deal on a used old Apple LED Cinema Display so it's a complete setup!
ZONEofTECH, hi, I wanted to ask you, for the mini mac 2018, this product to problems, and true that heats up a lot, is the thermal junk, it is not good, and i7 warms, if you use it for many hours of work, and thinking works you may have you know, is not it? I await your response, the contact from Italy
thank you so much
,
46 Minutes for the video export? That’s pretty insane! Are you sure it wasn’t encoding on the CPU and not making use of the iGPU instead?
You should do a video on how to make the Mac Mini as a server.
true... there are a lot of talks about using it as a server. But I have no idea how to set it or what is the use of it or the benefit of using the mac mini as a server compared to others.
Google exists
@@AFTstorm Well, that's not the point. Google exists as well for Mac Mini spec. No one needs to review it.
@@fianoanthonio im not saying i dont agree though. They could atleast put a link to a tutorial on how to do that. Fact of the matter is however that none of these tech channels are really tutorial channels that show you HOW to do it but just that you CAN do it
I am no youtuber but I am interested in doing something as soon as I get a decent mic, would you be interested in a video that explains how to set up a server (not mac related necessary)
I just bought the 2018 mac mini with the 3.2GHz 6‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 4.6GHz), 1tb SSD and 8GB ram (which I will do the upgrade) I am a music producer so I am looking for options to manage my Data like sound banks and samples, Logic pro projects and files and the back up system. Do you think the apple LaCie 8TB 2big Dock Thunderbolt 3 RAID Storage is a good idea? Thanks for this nice video. I didn't mind the red things on your lips ...hihihihi!
OWC is the only place I have found a pair of 32GB SODIMM. Rather expensive too.
Great review! My Mac Mini arrives Monday. I’m in video production, and was pleasantly surprised by the specs and price of this new Mac mini. I honestly would have gone for the iMac pro, but for me I really want to hang on to my curved ultra wide monitor. So I went with the Mac mini and upped all the options from storage to RAM to the 10 gigE connection port. Very excited. After this review, I’ll definitely consider the dedicated GPU unit 👍👍👍
Holding on to your monitor is the only reason you didn't pay an additional $4,000 or so?
Eric Wood I prefer the extra wide monitor, and the computer is paid for by my company, so yes I was happy to save them *~$5k
@@chf3127 That makes sense. I pay for my own hardware, so my view of Apple's value proposition is a tad different.
The Mac Mini was really designed for the audio and development markets, who both often connect multiple Mac Minis over 10Gb Ethernet. Not the video editing market, hence the eGPU options.
* AnimalHeadSpirit * Vienna Ensemble Pro allows you to connect multiple Macs over 10Gb Ethernet. Having 10Gb is a very good idea if you’re going to pipe a few dozen or so streams of audio over Ethernet. Very popular in the film scoring industry. It’s an app that acts as a networkable plugin host and mixing environment over Ethernet. Too bad Apple removed the distributive computing environment from Logic. It may have caught on at some point. Especially if A series SoCs come into the picture. But it still lives on in a simpler way in Compressor. I have two MacPros currently and I use it from time to time if I have a batch job that’s going to take some time render. Check out Vienna Ensemble Pro though. I do installations of it and build custom templates for other composers. It’s a really nice solution for spreading out your template over multiple workstations via Ethernet.
Big Thumbs up for the background not WHITE!!!!! this looks way better good job
Very nice review. 👍🏻👏🏻👍🏻
I know this is a bit late, but can I use the Mac Mini Quad Core version for regular use like web browsing and amateur Wacom digital art drawing?
Daniel, you didn’t say much about the Coffee Lake i7-8700B CPU. That CPU has Hyper-Threading. I think you should talk about that a lot more.
You’re using the i3 model?
I have a 2017 MacBook Pro and the Apple Store told me it would be better to run that though an external GPU/monitor as it would be more powerful than a Mac Mini. I’d appreciate your thoughts.
Old Man Tech Rant buy a pc
Seems like a good option for music studio/production, and curious as to if any musicians are upgrading from 2008 vintage MacPro 3.1 running Logic X or Studio One are giving serious look at the Mac Mini, or looking at used trashcan models etc... first glimpse...the MacMini i7 looks solid.
If I only do 1080 p gaming videos, is this a good option for editing? I’m talking about the i5 or i7 version. And no egpu
I want one of these but i think you would be better off with a iMac 27 inch for a daily use? Is it that much more powerful? then adding in screen, keyboard and mouse?
Better off with a non-Apple machine. I use a home-built AMD Ryzen 2200G-based system for that. That little chip has nice integrated graphics, yet offers power efficiency, and I can have it in more practical case that allows for **gasp!** multiple internal storage drives + optical drive and **faint** expansion cards.
what about thermal throttling, the fact that it costs 799$ and comes with 128gb ssd - to have it as a workable mac-alternative you need to upgrade to i5 or i7 cpu, add RAM and upgrade SSD - whoops you are in the realm of macbook pro or imac. so it is kinda upgradeable and kinda modular, however the price increase from 500$ to 800$ is not exactly affordable or properly useable any more as standalone mac. as you said yourself, in order to work with it, you need to add monitor, keyboard, mouse, upgrade cpu, ram and ssd, buy an egpu and so on.
you´re slipping my friend. 3 days ago you accuse apple for "trolling macbook pro customers" and now you praise them for a castrated macmini...
make up your mind, or say it as it is: the good, the bad, the ugly all together.
For 128GB to not be enough on a mac Mini you'd have to be pirating millions of mp3s or downloading tons of porn. LOL
@@kalijasin yeah ... or use an iphone and an ipad which both have 256gb for 2 years and make videos, photos and backup with them ... sure, 126gb is fully enough for 2018 new mac...
You can get a new 2 TB SSD from Amazon for $300. Add an enclosure for $10 and you've got plenty of space.
Do you know anything about Logic Pro X? I am looking at the i7 version 16gig version with ssd for Logic Music production on a 27" 4k monitor so this should have enough cpu for that correct? Logic Pro X is more Cpu vs gpu or not much gpu at all? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this seems perfect for my audio production needs with i7 and 16g ram
How about the comparison of the macbook pro 13 inch?
I tried upgrading RAM with OWC, 2x and had no issues with the installation but the system kept restarting, over and over. Reinstalled the OEM 8GB and it works fine. Any ideas about the OWC RAM, other than likely dead modules?
I'm a musician and former recording engineer so been involved with audio a long time, I keep getting tempted to get an iPad because music most hardware companies support iOS, but I always discover things iPads won't do and lose interest. I've had Mac Mini in the past and it was an excellent desktop computer and looking at the spec' of this latest one it looks like it should be a good computer for running Logic and other music software. Also the size of mini would work well integrating it into my music setup. So at this point the iPad is still on the list for size making quick videos of practicing or rehearsals especially with a 3rd party microphone. A MacBook Pro because it's all in one, but not as convenient for video recording. The Mini is powerful enough for Logic has lots of ports for external storage other devices, and small enough to just put on a shelf. So looks like be on the fence for awhile before I get something,
Interested in where you end up as a music config. I have a very advanced home recording studio that was built around a 2008 Macpro desktop, with 16GB Ram, 2TB fusion program drive, 2TB softsynth drive, 1.5TB audio drive, and a 3TB backup drive, hooked up to two Nec26" monitors via DVI. Time to upgrade, given many of the apps need OSX versions beyond Yosemite. Running Logic X, Studio One prof v3, and Ableton Live 9 Suite.
will be using mac mini for web development. no need powerful GPU to do that though
Top mac for music production.
Bought a i7 with 1 TB, 8GB and upgraded it to 64 GB RAM. Using it for big Orchestra Libraries in Logic Pro X. Works perfectly
ridgero thinking of getting a similar spec’d 2018 Mac mini. I’m using ableton and running plugins like, spitfire audio, omnisphere, kontakt, ozone, etc, going anywhere above 50 tracks. Would you recommend?
Thanks
what monitor did you use in this video ?
But how are the thermals? Pro Tools gives your pc a bit of a hard time and I don’t want the ambient fan noise.
Your comparison to the iMac Pro doesn't seem fair.
the mac mini is loaded with 64 ram vs 32 ram, 2 tb ssd vs 1 tb ssd.
In my comparison, the mac mini was considerably cheaper.
Very true, it ends up around 1/2 the price of the iMac Pro.
TRUE
Actually if someone needs really those 18 cores then iMac Pro wins. In any other case Mac Mini + external Vega 64/56 + some reasonable display can be up to 30 % cheaper than iMac pro while providing similar performance and experience.
