Gymnopédie no. 1 - Erik Satie

  • I love this piece - it's very soothing. Erik Satie composed 3 so-called Gymnopédies, which are all quite similar, even though the first one is the most famous one.
    There is a lot of debate around the meaning of the title itself - the word gymnopedie comes from the ancient Greek word 'gymnopaedia, which was an annual festival where young men danced naked (or just unarmed). Some dismiss it and claim that Satie got the inspiration from reading the novel 'Salammbó' by the French writer Gustave Flaubert or from a poem by J. P. Contamine de Latour, even though it remains uncertain whether the poem was written before or after this piece.
