Awesome aircraft. Thanks for posting this. One tiny critique of the video: I was wearing headphones during the engine start at 11:39, and almost had a heart attack.
Absolutely awesome. Great presentation; gives a feel for how much you did and how quickly the project was completed...given the complexity of your aircraft & systems. Hope you're enjoying the flying!!
We spoke briefly at Udvar-Hazy today - thanks for bringing your plane to the event. While I wasn’t looking for you specifically I wanted to learn more about the Velocity and this gave a nice overview of the build.
Hello Stephen, thanks for your interesting documentry on your Velocity building. I am French, 67, and have recently purchased a second hand Velocity 173 RG ( only 2 flying in France). Your video gives me a fairly good idea of the way a Velocity is built . Thanks so much for sharing the video and congrats for the great work you did !!
THAT was a lot of work. I'm 73 and in good shape but 12 hour days for months is beyond me now. My hat is off to both of you. The ignition system looked like something from Electromotive? I make the J&S SafeGuard knock controller.
Awesome video, I am contemplating a velocity build. This gives me more confidence to attempt the feat seeing the steps like you presented. Thanks for not adding music!!
Very Sweet Aircraft. I am taking my time restoring a 1961 Forney F-1A Aircoupe. It is a beauty but I look forward to something more challenging next. I have looked at Velocity. Fast and sweet four place sounds nice.
Thanks for posting this evidence (and reward) of your hard work! You obviously worked a LOT on this, but it also took a village when you needed help. I wish the photographer had shut off his diesel truck so we could better hear the sweet sound of that power plant pushing you into the sky on that first flight.
That quick build Velocity must be a lot easier to build than what I went through. I took me 27 years to finish my Glasair 3. Working alone. One thing I did find out is most of the 3's I saw at fly-ins were built in pro shops. So I was misled. I should have figured it out when I'd ask the owner about some part I was building and I'd get the same look from all of them. Speechless, like the deer in the headlights. They had no clue. But all put themselves down as the builder. They probably were in stark terror of being outed as fakes.
Hours are hours. If you stay with the plans, 3000 hours are a reasonable number of hours. The kit was completed at the factory in six weeks. Their tools, jigs, and other builds in progress to look at was the best way to build quickly.
Shouldn't the first test flight be a hop? Followed by many more hops? Maybe you didn't include that in the vids? Great build though guys!!!!!! Loved this intensely!!!
Great use of photos to assist the viewer to understand the steps and order of how something like this goes together. Curios - what is the lifespan of the airframe & wiring ?
I may not have been clear. The time was for the hours for both my wife and I working 13 hours a day for six weeks. We prefer to fly than build. Get it done.
Here is a link to Velocity velocityaircraft.com/airplane-kit-price.html Total cost is driven by many factors, but condition of the engine, avionics and the type of flying planned.
OK, I've seen it so many times and told so many aircraft owners: Assembling a quick-build kit is not "building an airplane" Even if there's still a lot of work involved in assembling a quick-build kit there is still so much work you didn't do and which you'll never experience doing. I built one airplane from plans. Used prefab spars quite a lot of prefab metal parts in the control mechanisms and regret not doing those myself.
So you never built an airplane because you didn't mine the steel for the engine. Design the plans for the airframe, refine the oil to make the resin for the composite parts. Why, because it would take you lifetimes to do that. As king of the world, I declare building a fast build kit as building an airplane.

Me too man...I almost died...wtf..
@@MrJitendra007 Had the volume all the way up for this when it got to that point and bamm made me jump.
jeeeeeesus what happened on the start need STC approval for new eardrums
Came here for this… made me jump out of my seat.
Same 😂
Six weeks of “Vacation” to build the kit. Six months in my driveway for the rest. No composite training. Pilot for 10 years. Do something everyday.
Thank you for sharing!
Is your propeller better or a 5 fin one?
That is incredibly intimidating.
I know right..!!!???
Well said.
11 months build for any experimental much less a complex one is amazing. Congrats. Thanks for sharing. fly safe.

Very little assistance from the factory staff. Susan & I completed the kit. 12 hours daily, every day for six weeks.
Wow 12 hrs a day! You have a great wife, my girlfriend would’ve been done after a couple hrs lol
Amazing 👍
Nice build vid, congrats to you, your wife, and friends. Beautiful plane. Clear skies.....
Beautiful piece of art 🎨 bravo 👏🏼🙌🏼🛩️🛫🗝️🇺🇸

Brilliant, I am so envious!
Would like to see the interior, avionics and finished product. Thanks
Congratulations on the work, great video, gives a good idea of progress and very fast execution!

Bill R , the photographer was on the fire truck that was providing support. Fortunately it wasn’t needed.
I guess it is a good thing to have a fire truck on hand for the first flight. Good flying!
Excellent build video! Hope you're enjoying your plane!
FAB BUILD OUT !!! wish i were there to fly it.. enjoy !! :) rich s, milan MI usa

Impressive, superb build. In just 11 months as well!
Thanks. Flies really well. 120 hours to date.
Awesome and inspiring!
I wish you both lots and lots and lots of nice flying destinations
Very very cool maybe someday, maybe? wishing you the best of luck!
Who else is watching this knowing they can't afford the kit alone 😂😢😂😂
Happy for you ! Good work.

Wow! Great job!👍👍
I thought everything would be pre-cut.
Awesome ❤️
Congratulations!
did a great job on it
Great job!!!
Shouldn't the first test flight be a hop? Followed by many more hops? Maybe you didn't include that in the vids? Great build though guys!!!!!! Loved this intensely!!!
This is a kit and even with the fast build wings and fuselage it qualifies as 51%. Go to www.velocityaircraft.com for more about the kit.
Great use of photos to assist the viewer to understand the steps and order of how something like this goes together. Curios - what is the lifespan of the airframe & wiring ?
The early Velocities are still flying. 30 years + at least
it seems like it was a "full time" job for you.
Do you have a background in aviation or composite materials?
Do they send you the fiber glass body? Fuel tank construction was a surprise to me.
Fuselage and wings are fast build.
Was that a complete "fast build" kit, or just the fusilage was fast build? That looked a lot harder than building an aluminum plane.
Who is editing this video , engine sound kill me
niiiiiiiiice!!!
What was your all in cost?
So cool
Heart attack at 11:41....
Well l guess alot has changed since Lancair 320, 51% rule ha! How many extra workers? Working every day all day helps.
👍
Scabiroy: Are you in New Kent County, VA? I live in Central VA. Could I come by (with my son) and see your plane?
dlawrengreen N735D is based at KFYJ. Call 804-785-9725 to schedule visit.
@@cabiroy Will do.
This is a kit, with everything already made, you just put it together. Does this qualify as 51% owner built?
He did way more then 51%
The FAA has determined that it does
Why such a big engine for such a light aircraft?
Max gross weight is 3300 pounds. Take off distance is 1500 ft.
What material is the main spar made of?
The Spar is made of S-glass. Looks like long strands of spaghetti.
hope your maths on the aircraft is better then your time :P 1100 hours in 6 weeks is a little impossible, 26 hour days.....
Nice build though
I may not have been clear. The time was for the hours for both my wife and I working 13 hours a day for six weeks. We prefer to fly than build. Get it done.
@@cabiroy ahhh makes sense. impressive effort bud, I'll be putting myself through the same soon.
Cool... but wood is sooooooo undependable:)
It's fiberglass or carbon fiber...not wood.
