- This is the story of our family’s first adventure to Alaska, on Holland America’s cruise ship, the Amsterdam. On our way we would make a stop in Oregon for Trevor’s graduation, and pick up Nana, who would be our fellow-adventurer. We saw great sights on our Alaskan adventure: blue-ice glaciers, breeching whales, swooping bald eagles, monstrous crabs, beautiful mountains, great food, and great fun.
Our ports of call included Seattle, Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan and Victoria, British Columbia. Shore excursions included the Mt. Roberts Tramway, humpback whale-watching off Lincoln Island, lunch at Orca Point Lodge on Colt Island, and a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau; the Sitka Sound Science Center and a concert at Harrigan Centennial Hall in Sitka; the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour and Creek Street in Ketchikan; High Tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, British Columbia.
Great video! Can't believe I watched 41 minutes of another families vacation...but it was so well done, and entertaining too! I am hoping to do a video of our cruise this summer. I have never been very good at putting videos together but this was a super example. Hope I do half as good.
I wondered what Holland Americas ships were like. This was an excellent video. It covered the ship, stateroom, dining, and sightseeing at the ports you visited, what else could anyone ask for. You get a high five here, Thanks for sharing..
Seeing this brought back a lot of memories, since I cruised on the amsterdam last summer!!! I miss that 24 hour room service...

What a great flick. I enjoyed all the personal reflections and narration. It was very interesting to see how and where you ventured to with the family and their reactions in them as they discovered new things.

Thank you for replying I go on my own now because my husband died seven years ago. Still enjoying life I am seventy eight years old and love cruising bin to Norway and down the Adriatic and the med. can't wait to see the wales and bears. My husband and I toured from Niagara Falls and then across the rockies and saw bears, then ended up in Vancouver. Done seventeen states in America ug Las Vegas but the Grand Canyon was something. Can't wait to get to Alaska.an old lady from Yorkshire UK.

My wife and I are in the checklist phase of a cross country road trip, central Ohio to Seattle; via the central route; north to Alaska and back by ship, then back to Buckeye country, via the northern route. We have driven west before, but never all the way to the Pacific. Thanks for feeding our excitement.

That was a fantastic insight into an Alaskan adventure. I didn't realise it would be so cold still in June, and have to admit its made me rethink my plans for next year. It looks like your family had a holiday to remember forever. We've been cruising with our children for many years and even though they're now 18 and 20 years old I don't think I will ever give it up cruising with them. It really is the best way to spend time together as a family. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for posting. We will be in this ship in 10 days on the same itinerary - and in fact, the same class of stateroom. Since I hadn't cruised in decades it will be like a first time. Your video has clarified many of my questions:
1- Embarkation ! awesome! you verified that we board on deck 3.
2- The meals at the Lido buffet - where it seems not crowded at all
3- the amount of room in the crows nest. (I was gonna call it 10-forward - i.e. Guinan. Startrek. - but I checked the deck plan and it's not on deck 10. Sad. I would have wanted to take a selfie in 10 Forward).
4- The weather - and hence my packing plans. Although you went in the spring, I'm now checking Ketchikan and Juneau webcams daily.
5- Breakfast in the room
6- the practicality of using binoculars in the room (although I think you were in the starboard side and we're on port - so you may have had a better view)
7- the need to stay away from that concert where everyone was bored
8- The disembarkation process. I guess they inform you when you can disembark so as not to crowed the narrow hallways.
Questions:
1- What camera did you use? especially when you were on the move
2- could you see the whales from the boat WITHOUT going on the tour? I was gonna skip that one.
3- did you see any bears? goats? moose?

What a lovely video!! I usually travel solo but I want to take my mom on an Alaskan cruise. Watching this video convinced me that I should go for it. I usually cruise on Norwegian so it was nice seeing a different cruise line.

Enjoyed your video. You and your family are adorable - especially Nana. May I borrow her for my next family trip? Have gone on cruises all over the Caribbean, and hope to do a Mediterranean cruise in the future, but living in San Francisco, Alaska seems to be the next logical choice. Your adventures gave me some ideas of what I'd like to do when the time comes!

I am going on the nieuw Amsterdam September loved your blog I have read that for 48 hrs the lido buffet is not self service is this true.thanks for your flog. Very informative. Watched it 3 times. An old lady from the UK
That was true on our voyage. They made the lido buffet self-serve after the second morning (13:07 in the video). Our steward said that this was for health reasons: if no one presents to the sick bay after 48 hours, they reason it's safe to make the buffet self serve. There were alcohol hand-sanitizing stations throughout the food service areas. BTW, Nana lived in the UK for six years and has returned frequently. Thanks for your comment!

We usually book our excursions through the ship, because if your return to the ship is delayed, the ship will wait for you or take responsibility for getting you back. The exception to booking through the ship was the Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour. The ship's website said that the tour was all sold out on the day we would be in Ketchikan, so we went directly to the tour website (alaskacrabtour.com) and were able to buy advance tickets there without problem.

Gosh, what a great family vacation video. Well done. Though I live in The Netherlands, I'll be going on an Alaskan cruise next year aboard the Norwegian Pearl. Thanks for the tips. I was wondering, did you guys have enough warm clothing? Those jackets looked awfully light. Also, did ANYBODY get seasick? That's my worst nightmare, being ill the whole time.
The large ships have stabilisers that prevent them rocking to much. You'll love it

The lowest it gets around that time is 10 degrees celsius so you don't need much more than a light jacket :)
