I am growing a lot of tropical fruit trees indoors and finding out you do not want to stick bark or other organic compostable materials in your potting mix. When the organic materials start to decompose they rob the potting mix of oxygen and promote root rot. Also as the organic matter decomposes it causes the potting mix to compact and then the peat and coco coir smothers the fine roots, another cause of root rot. I use Perlite, vermiculite, rice hulls, clay pebbles, sand and no more than 20% peat in the potting mix. I use different ratios depending on the type of aggregate I am going for. Then I add the organic materials like worm castings, fertilizer and wood chips on the surface. This has cured most of my over watering and root rot problems I use to experience.
One thing I add to the potting soil is “Azomite “. Potting soil is generally void of minerals and the Azomite replenishes/ adds minerals to the soil giving the plants 🪴 a more balanced soil and making easier for the plants roots to uptake nutrients.
I really have no idea what I’m doing but I’ve mostly been doing 2 cups general potting mix+2 cups orchid mix+1 cup pumice+1/2 cup charcoal. Depending on the plants I might do less of the general potting mix and add more orchid mix. This seems to work well.
@@PlantsandLucia Hola Lucia, I’m from Brooklyn, Ny….. can you please please make a video for monstera adansonii albo variegated and one for hens and chicks…I have not found the right soil mix for hens and chicks, to many mix info. Feel you are the right person to ask. I have hens and chicks I need to plant ASAP…please help! 🙏😩🙌🏼 Also a potting mix for outdoor plants like in NYC where the weather is so crazy we have it all here spring, summer, fall, winter.

Hello, I am Manuela from Switzerland. I enjoy watching your videos very much. I had lots of problems with small black flies which laid down their eggs in the soil. I guess I had it in a small plant which I bought. I watered my plants last two weeks with an organic liquid to kill those flies. I must all repot all my plants which are more than 40. I will use a good soil mix it with pinus radiata, bims, and maybe some perlite. My caccties I'll use a good soil for caccty mixed with perlite and pinus radiata. On top of the soil I'll add bims stones. It will help that no insect can go inside the soil. Bye. Manuela

Hello Lucia, thanks a lot for your answer. Tomorrow I'll water all my plants again with that organic liquid to kill the flies. Today I have received a parcel from a garden shop who are specialized for tropical plants. I ordered their special soil mix and bims stones for the top. It should be ok. I will repot each plant about 40 vompletely. I'll remove all the soil so that there is only the roots and plant and then repot it. I do like watching your videos very much.
