    Designing For is a series which looks at a level in gaming, and analyzes a theme central to that level's design. In this episode, we look at Peach's Birthday Cake from the original Mario Party, and how its design favoring a 50-turn game is lost, since most players simply don't have that kind of patience.

    Guys, thank you so much for all those kind words!! No thanks needed! Playing 50 turns of Mario Party on Peach's Birthday Cake, while initially we assumed we were signing up for torture, ended up being an absolute blast. Huge thanks goes out to Tommy for allowing us to be a part of this incredible channel, never miss an episode. We love you too buddy!

    Man I had no idea Peach's Birthday Cake was designed for longer play times but this totally makes sense. It's just, on the odd chance I WANTED to play a 35 or 50 turn round of Mario Party, Peach's Birthday Cake wouldn't be my first choice.

    actually after watching this video I have a lot of hope for the MP Superstars version of this board as the changes they are making to the board might make it way more enjoyable for 20 turn games. -the piranha plants make way more sense now with one plant covering two happening spaces
    -due to items being introduced there will be way more strategy to where you land obviously to target/avoid for example the happening spaces
    -I think they put goomba behind the star now therefore giving the opportunity to every player to buy at least one star at some point if they manage to earn enough coins in the first couple turns which can certainly be achieved through skill by winning enough mini games
    let's see how it plays out on superstars but I honestly think the board might be fixed!

    Peach's Cake was probably my favorite board from the 1st Mario Party... I remember using it a lot after my sister accidentally deleted my save file and I needed to build up my star count again to earn the two bonus boards. I guess I liked the linear, relatively short path; I never felt like I traveled a long way for nothing (like when Toad and Bowser switched places in Yoshi's or Mario's boards).

      It actually fixes a lot of issues he listed, there are more mini games, coins and items are given generously, I think there are less spaces and a short cut, so the plants can get out much sooner and still be an issue even in shorter games

    50 Turns party plays in Mario Party is a insanely fun. Games repeating themselves have happen often for me in 20 Turn games. xD Maybe I'm a patient guy but with the right people a 50 Turn match can be incredible fun.

    • @officertom6751
      @officertom6751 Před 2 lety +1

      I also like to do that. Maybe I'm also patient enough, and I have a feeling that my chances of winning are higher the longer the game lasts. I often end up having many more Stars than everyone else at the end of a 50-turn game.

    Never thought I'd end up coming back to a youtube channel for videos about a video game I hated as a kid. But these Mario Party videos are as entertaining as they are cathartic, and even helps me understand what went wrong for me all those years ago.
    That, and the humorous inserts between gameplay clips get me every time. Big Fan Indeed.

    The remake of this board in Mario Party Superstars is far more approachable because it make a nifty usage of the item system in that game when it comes to manipulating the movement thanks to the Goomba Lottery being moved to a junction after the Star space with an Item shop being placed before that junction.

  • @theothenintendomaster3717

  • @oni_shin

    I play 50 round games most of the time and at least 35 rounds. 15, or 20 feel way too short for me. The longer a Mario Party game goes the more biases, alliances and other self-made plots can happen. In short games, these stories can not bloom.

  • @Appolyon
    @Appolyon Před rokem

    I myself liked the "stealing" of coins by winning the minigames in each round, although in hindsight it's not the best option in game design, because it doubles the change in distance between the players compared to just giving the winner(s) the coins. My favorite game in Mario Party to this day is Grab Bag. Perhaps it would have been best if the "stealing" still would be included (because I think it's great to bring the opponents just one coin under the necessary coins to buy a star) but lower the coins gained or lost. So either the winner of the game gets 15 coins (in a 3:1 game) and no punishment for the losers, or 9 coins and everyone else loses 3 (maybe also just 6:2, that must be tested).

    I agree there are not enough minigames in a Mario Party so the same minigames repeat in a 50-turn game. And then there are even various minigame packs which don't contain all of the minigames, especially in Mario Party 5, 6 and 7. Of course I always select the All Games pack.

      Yeah. My reaction to seeing that trailer was "Wait, isn't that one of the bad boards?" - Though bringing in boards from MP1, 2 and 3... What item set are they going to use and are they going to retcon items into MP1 boards? And do items make Birthday Cake Piranhas more or less enticing (More to spend money on... And more ways to force other players to land on your piranha)

    • @chibi2239
      @chibi2239 Před 3 lety +9

      They're actually fixing it though! There's now an item shop, you can buy a smaller less expensive Pirahna to steal coins, there's a junction near the top of the cake for easier lapping, and Goomba is in a better spot. They're not just copy pasting it.
