    I think Boris Shcherbina (played brilliantly by Stellan Skarsgård) is one of my favorite characters because of how much his character develops and changes over the course of the story. He starts off as dismissive and confrontational with Legasov (Jared Harris), and just looking for someone else to blame like all the other higher ups. But he wasn't stupid. He listened. I think by the end, he and Legasov might have even considered each other friends. I don't know how true that is in real life, but in the context of this story, it's beautiful to see. The entire cast was marvelous.

    In the official podcast that follows this series, it's revealed that the three men didn't have that pump thingy to turn their flashlights back on. In reality, they traversed through pitch black by following along the pipes. The reason for this change was so that the viewers weren't just watching minutes of darkness

    The seeming recovery of people afflicted with lethal radiation poisoning is the result of the immune system shutting down. Once the immune system shuts off it stops drawing from the patient's energy reserves so they have more energy, and the fever stops so they feel better. Feeling better doesn't last long.

  • @Curraghmore
    @Curraghmore Před 2 lety +6

    One of the inaccuracies in this was that you can actually be around people who have radiation poisoning and be close to them and not 'catch' radiation poisoning from them. The firefighter's wife was played by Irish actress Jessie Buckley, who was nominated for an Oscar this year for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 'The Lost Daughter', directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal.

    Fact about the show, you didn’t show it but the final stage of radiation burns that the husband got was downplayed compared to what actually happened to those guys, they were physically melting, and at some point if they tried to lift their arms there was a good chance that the bones would come out of their arms, the only way to keep someone from truly suffering from that level of radiation is a bullet, there is no real other way then to just let them have peace by being in eternal slumber.

    Every time you post one of these, I kind of tend to write a comment, saying that my relatives took part in a liquidation effort of this catastrophe, and then deleting it, because me myself had nothing to do with it. It just looks like I want to be a part of something I've never experienced, being too young and such. Even though I've spent every summer within like a five hours drive from the actual site of the event since 1988 and I still own a dosimeter, my grandparents bought to check if it was safe to live where we were in Belarus. Still the feeling of unseen danger is there. I just hope the series itself and your account of it will somehow help humankind to avoid the mistakes it committed, portrayed in this series. Sorry, I probably make no sense.

    It's crazy to think about the fact that we know without question that those firefighters and people who were most effected by the radiation, we know they have no chance of living. But instead of doing the humane thing and putting them out of their misery and unimaginable pain , we let them die this horrific relatively slow death. (It's certainly slow for the people experiencing the pain.) That makes no sense to me. Believe me, I'm aware that every bit of what is going in this scenario is horrible. Having to take a life, regardless of the circumstances, is a horrible thing to do. But there are levels of horrible. And one is so much worse than the other.

    (not so) fun fact! Russian soldiers during the ongoing invasion into Ukraine have actually dug trenches in exclusion zone. Even more - they did it in Red Forest, just outside the power plant! And thus they released into air a plenty of radioactive isotopes that were buried under a layer of soil. There are unconfirmed reports of Russian soldiers being treated for radioactive burns in hospitals in city of Homel, Belarus.

    11:24 the body doesn't actually hold radiation like that. If it did, the person would be dead immediately. The main concern would have been the clothes he wore in to the hospital, as clothes can hold nuclear fallout but your skin and your body can't. You just gotta get any debris on your body, off. It would be safe to interact with the person, as long as the nuclear material is removed. I would be more concerned with coming into contact with those guys who trudged through that waste water equipment.

    One of the best shows I've ever seen along with Breaking Bad and Ozark - though of course, Chernobyl is REAL - which makes it all the more horrifying. AND according to all I've read, the show is pretty accurate. Wanted to mention in ep 2, where the heli goes down, it wasn't because of the radiation, it was because it hit the lines of a crane that was standing there - though even if the pilots had survived and not gone down, they WERE too close and probably would have died of radiation poisoning. Ugh. so awful. That incident really happened too and you can see the real helicopter going down at Chernobyl on YT. Thanks, as always, for your great reactions and commentary.

    "I speak without fear of contradiction." That appears to be Dyatlov's plan after the explosion by having people go to the pump room and ordering them to look into the core. By killing off all his colleagues he could have made up any story he wanted and mitigated his responsibility, but people talked before they died.

    One note about the science here. Mostly this show gets it right. But the pregnant woman was in no danger from visiting her husband once his clothes were gone and he was washed off. There would be no residual radiation, just the damage already done. Now that was apparently not understood at the time in the Soviet Union, so the fear was a real thing but not backed by the science. Whatever damage she got was from her own exposure, not from her husband. There is another thing they get wrong but I think that is in the next episode, so I will wait and not lay down spoilers.

  • @NotoriousMinion
    @NotoriousMinion Před 2 lety +1

    Hey James! It’s important to note that this is not 100% accurate. The makers of this said they didn’t wish to make another documentary about this, as that has been done many times already, but rather wished to show what it felt like to be in the middle of this. The panic, confusion, desperation, bleakness, all of it. It’s not meant to be 100% accurate, but the slight inaccuracies are there to illuminate how the people on the ground truly felt about this and be far more immersive in that sense. Really interesting storytelling here.
    EDIT: to clarify, when I’m talking about the accuracy I’m referring to the scientific side of things here. Obviously there are liberties taken in any dramatic recreation in terms of dialogue, plot, events, people, and so forth. But I mean of how some fears about some of the fallout they talk about might not be to the extent they are referring too or might give some weird analogies (such as the bullet analogy for radiation), but it’s meant to reflect how it would feel to be boots on the ground and having to think immediately of solutions for a terrifyingly large problem.

      I realize that their approach worked and probably helped with the approachability for at least some of the viewing public, but I still hate them for going so off piste with the science. It's just such a wasted opportunity, entertainment being afraid of facts is why ignorance is so widespread. This could have been the chance to make a dramatization with a good budget that actually educated people about the event instead of the usual few percent of viewers bothering to learn more about the event and the rest coming away with vague memories of incorrect facts and happily proclaiming that nuclear power bad because they all could blow up and irradiate half the continent at any time.
