A single dot on a character usually means it is an ideogram, and that the dot is pointing us to one aspect of the pictogram.
白 the dot is a ray of light from the sun日 is the BRIGHTEST WHITEST object; 本 the root of a tree木 is its FOUNDATION, the sharp edge of a knife刀 is to be ENDURED 刃。 Single lines also change a characters meaning and pronunciation. Small things make a big difference! Pay attention to details.
