  • Gravity Falls is, perhaps, the most successful family-friendly animated show produced in the 2010s. Since its finale in 2016 a lot of shows have been compared to Gravity Falls, especially other Disney shows such as Amphibia and The Owl House. But for me, the show that perfectly conveys the spirit of mystery and childhood excitement that made Gravity Falls so good is Netflix’s Hilda - a British-Canadian animated show based on the series of graphic novels by a British cartoonist and comic book writer Luke Pearson who, besides creating Hilda, was a screenwriter and a storyboard artist of another successful series Adventure Time.
Hilda is a truly beautiful show. I watched the fist season all the way back in 2019, but for this video I binge-watched all three seasons plus the full-length movie Hilda and the Mountain King. And this is my review. I am going to be talking about what made me love the show, what elements of it could be improved and why you should give it a chance too if you haven’t seen Hilda yet.

I never really saw Johanna as being overprotective. I can see there were times where she was, but overall, she was being about as protective as a mother of a very adventurous child should be.

Totally agree, a lot of streaming animated shows are underappreciated.

I like Hilda a lot too. It's my fourth favorite Netflix show (after Kipo, Arcane, and She-Ra). It certainly has a very appealing visual style, especially with the colors. I've seen a couple of videos analyzing that aspect of it.
I also find it interesting how it feels like the tone changes completely whenever mum gets involved. When it's just Hilda and her friends, it's just the regular kids show shenanigans (like almost getting killed by pirates or by some lovecraftian monster, or actually getting killed and then coming back to life). But when Johanna is on the line as well, it feels like there's real drama and stakes. She doesn't have the same plot armor as the kids. That episode with the creature in the lake really caught me off guard. I wasn't expecting to see blood in a show for 7-year-olds.
I've never read the books, but I've heard that they focus a lot more on Hilda and Johanna, and that's why in the show it sometimes feels like the other characters have nothing to do. This is most apparent in the movie.

I have never been fully attached to a show like this for a long time. Hilda is the definition of peak animation and story telling and the characters are all incredible like Hilda, Johanna, Twig, Kaisa, Raven, and more.
On the day it ended, I became very conflicted on whether it should get a revive and continue further or end with "The Fairy Isles".
One side of me wants it to continue on for a couple more seasons (not making it too long) and see Hilda, Johanna, and others have more adventures and mysteries.
The other side feels like the ending was perfect (as in it would move on from Fairies) and would be scared to see an older Hilda. It's a show about a child and if she was an adult (or a teenager), it would lose interest.

I would like to see another movie like Hilda and the Mountain King. Just an 80-minute adventure, not a full-length season.
