It was really heartwarming, and a testament to how well the show is done, that you felt so sad when Rigel died. ❤ To think people could do such a great job that we'd get emotional over A PUPPET really speaks volumes!

The scenes with Aeryn speaking the backwards sounding language was actually her. Claudia Black actually spoke like that for those scenes. Great episode, scared the hell out of me when they killed Rigel.

Thanks, loved your reaction. You are getting hooked. Six years ago I had a knee replacement done & I was laid up, unable to do much. My wife borrow season one from the library so I would have something different to watch. When I saw the cover it looked corny and scifi not normally my cup of tea. I thought she was trying to be nice doing something for me. I figure I watch a couple of episodes and tell her "Thank you, but not my cup of tea." Well I got hooked, finished season one in a few days. She returned it & brought me season 3. They didn't have season 2. I thought, "Oh hell no. This will not do." I went to Amazon bought all 4 seasons as well as THE PEACEKEEPER WAR.
I LOVE seeing your reactions to the Farscape episodes and in my opinion this is one of the best. I loved how you got sad at Rygel's supposed death because that's how I felt when I watched it for the first time.
Fun fact the guy playing Creighton's dad was on Galactica 1980... the sequel to the original battlestar galactica
Aww, you weren’t annoyed and upset by Rygel’s “Death”, you absolutely devastated! It’s actually great seeing this reaction, especially for HIM, it just shows how in love with the characters you’ve fallen.
I remember feeling sick the first time this episode aired and they showed Rygel's dissected body on the table.
I am loving this soooooo much. Each of these Farscape reactions just makes my day 10 times brighter. Great job and I truly hope you are enjoying this series.
Aaaah, you're there. Farscape, to me, begins with this episode. It's frelling glorious :D

It was fun to see Aussies as the sinister government agents in an sf show for once. I reckon we gave the Yanks a run for their money in the Men In Black stakes. As the old spoof tourism ad went, "Come to Australia! You might accidentally get killed!"
This episode might be more effective now than when it first aired. Back then, most TV shows needed to reset to the status quo at the end of the episode, so they could be shown out of order or pick up new viewers who didn't know what had happened the week before. We were all used to the conventions, and we knew that even those with a continuing storyline like Farscape would never do anything as drastic as kill off one of the main cast in some random mid-series episode. It would have to be a big-ticket special like a two-parter or a series finale.
As soon as that Rygel corpse showed up, a lot of us watching at the time instantly went "It's all fake!", because there was no way he was really dead. We'd seen that kind of fakeout too many times on other shows like Stargate SG-1. (Oh, Daniel died offscreen halfway through Season 1, did he? Yeah, right.)
But nowadays with more serialised shows, especially on Netflix and the like, the old conventions have been thoroughly subverted and they really do pull off twists like that all the time.
(Chiana is barely in this episode, which suggests that her staying on the show was a late decision and they didn't have time to write her into it much.)
I’ve said for a while that streaming has done away with the need episodic style of series due to the ability to binge, but I hadn’t considered the change to fakeouts like Rygels death here. Great point! 👍
What got me hooked on this show was the idea that they could actually kill off a main character.
One of my favourite episodes of the first season and it has repercussions throughout the rest of the series!👍👍

Hard as it may seem to believe, there actually a good number of fans on the scifi channel forums who swore up and down that the John and Aeryn kiss in The Flax was going to be a one off thing. I greatly enjoyed watching them all eat a ton of crow when this episode aired. Of course, they then moved their goal post and started claiming what happened in this episode would never happen again.
I remember. There was also a LOT of debate over whether the Aeryn that John slept with was the real Aeryn, or a construct by the Ancients. Or if their night together would have bigger ramifications (although depending on how you interpret Season 4...)
When I first watched this one I thought it was kind of funny that he was making it back to Earth so quickly in the series. When they "killed" Rygill, I knew it was a fake Earth.
Not me. Because they had introduced a new character (Chiana) in the previous episode, I really thought they had killed Rygel for real.
I was like that Godzilla meme where he goes "F*ck this tree, f*ck this castle, f*ck this show, f*ck everything!"
Probably the single most important episode in the entire show. Almost EVERYTHING with the myth arc comes back to this point.
The sketches of Rygel are, IIRC, actual concept art from preproduction.
This episode shows just how talented Claudia is. Although it sounds like they just recorded her dialogue and played it back again for Aeryn's dialogue in the cell, no such tricks were used. She actually did all the clicks, stops, and vocal tricks herself to create the Sebacean language.
This was one of those rare times when the original UK broadcast and the original US broadcast were edited differently. They changed it in the US broadcast so that it was unclear whether or not John and Aeryn had sex, but the UK version left it clear. Odd that.

@@medusacascade well, in terms of what can be aired on TV, anyways.
The entire first season was edited differently, not just this episode.
The US broadcast of the first season ran about 5 minutes shorter per episode because US commercial breaks are longer. So EVERY first season episode had extra scenes in the UK that weren't aired in the US (IE, the US broadcast of "Premier" was missing the reaction shot by DK and Crichton's father after John disappeared, along with one of the scenes on the Command Carrier; I believe the one where they use the "enhance button" to show Crichton in the module). Beginning with the Season 2 premier they started to use the same edit for both markets.
However, the DVD release (which is what Amazon streams) used the full UK edit with the scenes that were cut from the US broadcast.

Yeah, it's a John centric episode and IIRC it's the only one where he's in every single scene. It can't be stressed just how important this episode is in relation to the rest of the series. The show has slowly been getting better through the season (Jeremiah Crichton notwithstanding) but here is where it truly becomes "Farscape."
Btw, the dvd commentary for this episode is absolutely hilarious, where Claudia Black starts making fun of New Zealand accents. She's a trip.
Claudia is just plain funny all around. It's almost kind of sad she plays such a serious character, because she has such fantastic comedic chops (Anthony Simcoe is also VERY funny, especially in the two outtake videos, but D'Argo is offered much more opportunity for comedy on the show itself).
When John made the chicken noises at Zahn and asked what the translator microbes made of that, clearly from her reaction, the meaning *WAS* translated. That to me was extremely interesting.
I wonder what would happen if two beings who speak the same language are talking, but they use a phrase that means something different.
Some friends from Ireland told us that his job as a young preteen/early teen was to go around and knock up all the single ladies for church. To us, "knock up" means to make pregnant.
Or once, when I met tourists from Ireland I said, "Well, if you're from Ireland I have to ask: How's the craic?"
This question means different things to different people. For some it means you are asking how the cheap cocaine is. ("Craic" sounds like "crack").
Does it translate what you mean to say? Would it make misunderstandings less likely?
Fond memories of the beach and plaza at Cronulla. Pity the ancients didn't replicate him some fish n chips... 😎

I left off at Farscape season 3...midway. or so. No season four or peace keeper Wars. methinks it time...
Season four is actually my favorite season.

@@Alieo24 Here in New York city during the original run of Farscape...there were huge time gaps in programming...not just in the beginning where you may have to wait for as long as six months just to complete the season. I made the decision in year 3 to stop watching until I had taped all episodes right to the end. Then came the cancellation. I was gutted. stopped watching but continued taping. Then the Peacekeeper Wars came out. ended up dvding the whole series. Just never got back to watching. So here I am...years later...poised to take the plunge again. Cheers..
I missed s4 and a large chunk of s3 due to work changing at the time.
I have just finished a binge rewatch up to s4 end. It's better than I remember.
I still think S3 is the best overall but S4 is pretty decent and TPKW is a must see.
I can tell you they got the idea for Language Translate from Doctor Who. They couldn't make it the ship that Translates so they used a Translation Device. I remember when my Space Ship crashed. Well, when I say Space Ship, it was my buggy. I was 9 years old at the time. Shooting down hill my Buggy hit the kirb and I flew over a hedge and landed on an Alien, an Action Man figure. Funny how I can remember that.
What?! I always thought the translator microbes were a take off of Douglas Adams' idea of the Babel Fish which I interpreted as knock on Star Trek's Universal Translator, which made an appearance almost a decade before Dr. Who's translation circuit.
@@wiredtardis The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was originally a BBC Radio 4 Broadcast in 1978. Doctor Who was long before that and before Star Trek.
The show may have existed before that, but Star Trek had a specfic device in the script for translating alien languages in real time with the universal translator about a decade before the TARDIS' translation circuit was explicitly brought up in the script was which in the Baker era.
@@wiredtardis Actually Star Trek in it's variations took a number of things from Doctor Who. In one Episode they used all the Actors names who played the Doctor. There is a couple of Videos on youtube that gives a number of them, but not them all. You should look it up.
@@Jamienomore in fact, the idea of a universal translator was invented in 1945, in a novella by Murray Leinster titled 'First Contact', and while the first onscreen appearance of the concept was indeed in Star Trek, that doesn't really matter.
The fact is that the _concept_ of a universal translator has been a staple of science fiction since long before either Star Trek or Doctor Who were even on TV. While it's not impossible that they got the idea from one show or the other, it's eminently more likely that they already knew of the need for such a device when they created Farscape.
In other words, saying they got the idea for a universal translator from _either_ show would be like saying they got the idea for using a spaceship to travel in space from Star Trek.
There are a lot of unique concepts Doctor Who can take credit for, but a universal translator isn't one of them, because it's not a unique concept.
So it brings! Buckle up it starbursts from here!

It was weird watching you react cause this is one of the rare episodes I genuine don't like. There are good bits but overall I just dont like it at all. I dont like that it feels more like a commentary on "humanity" then how this would genuinely play out and it feels like it would have ruined the crews views of him more than it did and just ugh. Im making myself stop cause I could just rant and rant and rant.
The only things I really liked is hearing without the translators and Criton realizing its not real and looking for an out. The rest is just much of eyerolling for me. Its nice to step back and sort of see it from someone else's perspective.
Edit: it seems reading the comments that Im a very rare breed not liking this ep as it was so many people's favorite of season one which to me is just bizarre.
Honestly, I think the "human" reaction is one of the most realistic parts of the series when you consider how nasty people are to "others" of our own damn species.
