Those gauges looked amazing-like brand new! Agree-the old gauge illumination bulb holders are somewhat rickety.
Thanks Robert, Just got through test and drive.. everything working okay except temp and fuel gauge wires are backwards.
The blue and yellow wires need to be where the green wires are plugged in. With that change everything working as is should!

Beautiful work Mike! Pls check your temperature gauge as it shouldn’t indicate max temp when you turn on ignition as you did.... probably you’ve installed the wrong gauge/ temp sender combination......keep us posted pls

I think the issue could be an incomplete circuit. The engine is not installed at this point so sensor is not able to read any resistance.
Will let you know though if its a problems once were running!
Looks absolutely magnificent ! Was looking at a custom build with really elegant gauges but this is looking just as good. The car is almost there, isn't it ?

Yes the car is looking like a finished product.. Still need to finish up the front seats and install the doors..a couple misc items and that should do it for the body.
The engine and gearbox still needs to be built after that
Mike, your restoration is the best! Do you think that it might be better than that of some of the top resto shops? Are you going to keep the car, or sell it to start another restoration?

The goal on this restoration has been to bring it to complete and thorough restoration with the highest quality
parts and work possible. It tough to compete with Pro shops as they have tooling, experience and man power we do not have here. If in the end we could be in the same ball park I would be thrilled
There is some exceptional work being done out there now.
As for selling it ..Not sure what the future holds ins store for me but the immediate plan is to enjoy all the hard work=)
As for a future build.. that would require me stepping away from my current business.
Its not realistic or possible to do another restoration as a part time hobby..

It looks gorgeous. My car had had a direct short in the dash harness sometime during it's life and suffered a partial dash harness meltdown. The dash lighting circuit is not fused! No relays on the headlight/high beam switch either. Not sure what they were thinking there.

Yes I can see easily how a short could occur and create a melt down..The harness set up is very sensitive to exposure.
Your car seems to be lucky it didnt catch fire from the melt down..anyways you are lucky!=)
@@MikesRestorations Hey Mike, yes very lucky. It happened during the previous ownership. Lots of twisted wires and duct tape in there :). It's a wonder it worked. I had the entire power harness repaired from the battery back and removed and then installed it myself.

Thats a great question..It looks as if they scored the shape with a cutter much like cutting glass.
Scoring the round shape and then breaking along the scored edge with snips to size it. Seems like a crude method but thats how they did it..must have been more cost effective than molding it.
It was cut from plain flat stock rather than molded.
I'm curious about the sequence of the assembly. Your remark about big hands trying to get the clock installed made me wonder if at the factory the clock was installed before the wiper motor and linkage. It seems like it would be easier for the factory to to arrange the sequence with all the parts at the ready. That might be information that never leaves the factory. However it goes together, it's looking pretty good!

Im pretty sure the factory installed the gauges prior to wiper motor and the other dash components. Its tight in there..
Unfortunately my gauge restoration timing was a little late..

Yes installing clock before speedo is the way to go.. If waiting on clock progress goes on anyways=)
Hi Mike your gauges look great. Enjoyed your video. North Hollywood Speedometer do excellent work I set my tachometer,speedometer, and Clock there also they did excellent work. Mike the The wiring for your dash gauges looks like new wire did you replace your wiring or is that the original wiring? I would like to replace some or all of my dash wiring in my 911.

Yes I agree..North Hollywood Speedometer does an incredible job and provides a service that is impossible for the DIY guy to replicate.
The wiring harness is original.
When I pulled it out of the car it went thru a thorough cleaning and tune up of all electrical connections and heat shrink covers.
Also for the the dash it turns out that I replaced about 8 bulb sockets and the entire set of bulbs.
Only one was working out of the original set up.

Awesome, as usual. Why does the clock get a gasket & the other gauges do not? It still amazes me how they built these in any kind of volume.
All gauges have gaskets but they were probably mounted by Mike beforehand.

As Fredrik commented yes they all do get rubber gaskets..they were installed before sliding into the dash

Hey Mike, what rubber grease do you use? I remember you saying but checking a bunch of vids I can’t find which one you note it in. I need to lubricate my shift linkage and want to make sure I use the correct grease. Thanks.

I use Castrol brand.. There is a lubricant page in our store link in all the video discription boxes. You'll be able to find all the products I use and recommend there.
Rubber grease works best on rubber seals. Silicone seals can use either synthetic or petroleum based grease. Anything metal to metal I prefer petroleum based.
Rubber grease is a mineral base and won't do well with heat.

Its a good idea and covered quite a range of years with the design.

Mike, can you confirm if your hazard switch is pulled, do you get the dash flashers to blink in unison as well? Mine do not, and many forums have conflicting information on whether the arrows in the tach work as well as the light within the hazard switch. Thank you!

Daniel, I just hooked up the battery and did a system check. On my car the emergency flasher does not work in conjunction with the turn signals when flashing. It only flashes by itself.

Hi Mike, these small brass bulb holders with one cable. Wouldn't it make sense to change them to a brass bulb holder with a "spade connection" instead? I can only find the ones with spades to buy or do you know who sells them?
Yes thats actually what needs to be done to replace them..I ended up replace about 6 of them to spade style, all new bulbs throughout dash and a couple other of the larger bulb holders.
Just need to add a female end the the wire going into them.

The wiring harness is original..I pulled it out of the car a few years back and went thru it end to end working out all connections and cleaning.
Im not sure where to source an aftermarket ..Originals are nice but very fragile and brittle to work with.
Extra care is needed if removing from car and re-pulling

I used mothers cleaner carnuba wax and a damp microfiber rag to removed the haze
This should help in preventing cloudy lenses down the road

I fall in in the line of tributes to you Mike. This video is really really helpful to me. But the red light below fuel measurement, isn't this red light a warning when fuel too low? The generator red light is to the left on the Temp gauge, right?
When I drive with low fuel and turns sharp to the left, the red big light turns on. The petrol is moving in the tank and therefore the floater in the tank sinks and indicates low fuel.

There were many fuel and temperature combination gauges used on these early cars..My manual speck out the alternator light for this location..I'll have another look to make sure I didn't misread anything is possible!
@@MikesRestorations The red light below the fuel gauge is a low fuel warning light. The green light on the temp gauge is for low oil pressure. There is also a red light in the temp gauge. That red light is for the alternator not working. That is usually due to the alternator belt destruction.

@@MikesRestorations Thanks Mike. I did this a few years ago, and the clock still works fine. It runs slow, but there is an adjustment on the back to correct. Since I disconnect the battery often, I haven't bothered getting it dialed in. The radio is original to the car. I took it out and replaced with a "retro" bluetooth one, but thinking I will put it back in for the look. I don't listen to the radio anyway when driving the Porsche!
