    I always enjoy myself when I take this bow to the range. I use slightly heavy arrows (almost 600 grain bamboo) and don't grip the bow too tight, that reduces the hand shock. But for me that's all part of the English longbow experience. ;-)

      I've got this bow at 60lb @ 31" , currently shooting 600gn pine shafts quite nicely & 520gn spruce arrows a bit quicker lol. I asked Richard head longbows about using a taper tool with bamboo shafts & got told traditional longbows don't shoot bamboo arrows lol. We both know that's not accurate 😂

      @@chroma6947 Not very nice tbh. I had to build the handle up a bit with cork & re wrap with thong to make it more comfortable to use. It's a painful wrist slapper regardless. I'd get a decent string for it when you know your exact length as the included string didn't last long with mine before it broke a couple of strands..

    Got this bow in 96#@28", 154.00 Eur plus shipping. Here a few things about this bow:
    1. after removing the handle wrap I discovered that the back of the bow is spliced together. Two pieces of Osage wood instead of one!
    2. the transition from bow to horn nock is very slim just 14mm. Add to this that the bowyer also removed material from the back of the bow and so weakened the bow structure in this area. Considering the draw weight the bow/nock transition looks prone to break. So I glued a wrapping around both ends and whipped it with thread for reenforcement.
    3. the bow string is a Flemish twist string made of dacron, not the best material for this draw weight of nearly 100# as it stretches to much. Worse the loop of the Flemish twist came apart at brace height!! So I ordered a new FF string from a bowyer who makes and shoots English Warbows!
    4. the overall making looks rough. There are some scratches on the back of the bow in the handle area and the sides of the bow show some uneven cutting. Out of the box the wood felt very dry so I waxed the bow properly.
    I have not shoot the bow yet as I am still waiting for the new string to arrive so I can't comment on performance yet.
    So far I would say the quality of the bow reflects its price!

    The Medieval Longbow like the Manchu Bow was designed to shoot long heavy arrows and drawn to 30-32 inches.. The bow was tillered to describe an arc at full draw "Compass" and did not have a stiffened handle section like a modern version which are designed for target archery. I understand it might be difficult for you to get your hands on one but if you can they are a very different bow to the Victorian designed modern Longbow.
    Kind regards
    Kublaicarl.

    Great stuff! I I got a samick Cheetah 45#68"with arrow rest cut out (not a centershot) and drow it to the earlobe 30-31" medi/style which opens up all the passion of this bow and provides for the most powerful but not very accurate shot (who cares about accuracy if the purpos is to hit as hard as possible 100 kgs of frantic enemy meat anyplace in close combat situation))Otherwise I shoot it 3 under 28" drow it is very accurate but dull and absolutely unforgiving for a slightest technical mistake! Happy New Year and merry russian christmas today!

    Excellent review as always Armin. FD make fine bows at a reasonable price. I own several of their bows mostly horse bows ie Scythian and Hun. I have an Osage orange ELB: 66lbs @28". To be honest as I enter my dotage I find this bow too heavy to shoot comfortably. Anyway, I ordered this trilaminate bow over a week ago and it is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. I'm very excited to shoot this bow on my home range, tomorrow! At 40lbs @ 28" this should be a fun bow to shoot. Flaxen Saxon.

  • @emarsk77
    @emarsk77 Před 4 lety +1

    Quick way to debunk the 60º angle test: imagine to have on that longbow very VERY short siyahs or recurved tips (let's say 1cm!). Now you could technically have whatever angle you want, but the bow geometry would be basically the same.
    There's probably some angle that tells us something useful, but it can't be the one between the string and the limb tip.
    That 60º angle that empirically seems to work for many bows must be the result of some common geometric proportions (and so it's maybe useful anyway, within reason), but the real indicator must be somewhere else.

    • @ArminHirmer
      @ArminHirmer  Před 4 lety

      where could the real indicator be?

    • @emarsk77
      @emarsk77 Před 4 lety

      @@ArminHirmer Honestly, I don't know, I never studied the details of bow mechanics and dynamics. Maybe some measurement that takes into account how and where the limbs flex. I believe there is some value in your method - until someone finds a better one - at least for comparing similar bows; I wonder, however, how useful it can be when used to compare bows with substantially different designs like an Asiatic bow and a longbow.

    Actually 7 inches brace hight is quite a lot for long bow, they are usually around 6 inches. I make most of my bows my self, and i have made 8 long bows, from 30 to 55 punds draw weights, with bending and non bending handles, and all of them having 6 inch brace hight, and never needed arm quard, cus if u hold yor wrist straight it will not hit it.

      60° string angle is the most efficient at propelling something forwards especially heavy arrows. When you push against something with your body you automatically push at 60° for the most efficient use of your strength

    If you’d like to give yourself the creeps then remove the handle wrapping. The osage wood of the belly is made from 2 parts glued together (at least on my bow). When you remove the wrapping, you can see that. The problem is, that makes the belly weak. Usually it´s no problem to shoot such a bow without arm guard, but in this case the string slaps right into your wrist, due to the weak belly. In my opinion the bow is not reasonably prized- it´s cheap. I can´t recommend such a poorly made bow. So everybody who plans to purchase that bow, be aware of that
