The Downbeat Podcast - Mario Duplantier (GOJIRA)

- My guest this week is none other than Mario Duplantier of French metal titans GOJIRA. One of my favourite bands and drummers of all time, he spilled insane and humble knowledge about everything it takes to get to his level as a musician. We caught up before their INSANE show in support of their latest album Fortitude to talk about everything from drums and practicing to jamming with James Hetfield and stage fright. It was an inspirational chat and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

not drinking ever before shows, never skipping pratice... out of "respect for the people that pay tickets"... you can tell mario is a great human being.
You haven't read the text leaks, have you?
@@twerktospec what text leaks bro
@@twerktospec what texts? gotta cite your sources
@@twerktospec You're an idiot
@@twerktospec Nothing even pops up when I try searching for anything related to “text leaks”, don’t go pulling stuff out of your arse and then run mate
You can almost hear Craig lose his mind when Mario organically says Justice for Lars
The drums were super loud in the mix. That's why drummers loved that album.
He should have slapped him for that.
The guys in Gojira are truly a treasure. They were on tour with Car Bomb in 2017 and when I saw them in Helsinki, my buddy Elliot (drummer for Car Bomb) asked me if I'd like to meet "the guys" after the show.
I hadn't even dared to ask despite being a massive Gojira fan for over a decade, but my response was naturally "uhhh, heck yeah??".
So cut to me, nervous, entering G's backstage and immediately being embraced by Joe who at this point had no idea who I was. Elliot introduced me as his friend, and then just sort of left me with Joe. We chatted about personal stuff for a good twenty minutes, then he excused himself and said he needed to hit the shower after which Mario came up to me to chat... He asked me about my band, offered me pizza, and wrote the name of my band on the box.
Then Jean-Michel swooped in, offered me a beer, and shit got crazy. We laughed so much for over an hour (at one point Mario cussed him out in French, genuinely upset, for spilling beer on the couch) and J-M just kept serving me beer. I kinda wish he hadn't, that way I'd have clearer memories of this night, but the selfies in my phone were worth it.
Anyways, watching this interview really hammered home to me once again why this band is so important. How they treat people (and the Earth) is so, so inspirational.
Dear Finowa, your cover of Wisdom Comes got me into Gojira back in like 17 years ago. And I thank you for that.
@@kalj3 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
gojira introduced me to metal years and years ago and now car bomb is my most listened band of the past year. I wish more than anything I could have seen them, especially since they played in my hometown on that tour. Heartwarming story man, car bomb and gojira alike are amazing pillars of music
My dream is to can share all Gojira has done to me Joe, Mario, Jean Michel and Christian they just change my life of musician (I’m a drummer) and they still inspires me every dau
So true brou
Anyone remember when Mario couldn't speak English? This is insane. Totally fluent.
Yeah! it's been a while since I listened to an interview from him but I opened this thinking "wait he doesn't do english?!" even with some words mispronounced you understand the word he was trying to convey. Wish I had the drive to be fluent in more than one language.
Very good english, slight french accent occasionally
It's soooo fluent. It's a different Mario.
His English is so fluent, but his french accent is so heavy
@hurlbag559 Peri-fairy cracked me up 😂😂😂 His English is incredible!! Though, I know the way letters and vowels are annunciated very differently in French, and I commend him in learning English so fluently!! Well done, mario!!
Craig: Teach me how to be good!
Mario: No no no no
This was so cute lol
When he asks "what about you?" - I met Mario after a show in Dublin and he was doing that to me as well. I was taken back by his apparent interest in my life. Great human!
@@thepluggy1 Dublin 2015?
I met Gojira at Sydney airport in 2012 and they (especially Mario) were very curious and interested in knowing what I was doing in life. They are wholesome!
Thank you for bringing him to the podcast! It’s great to hear him being a normal guy and sharing his thoughts with us. Mario IS THE MASTER of them all.
Gojira is the best fucking band that has ever existed and will ever exist. There is nothing anyone will ever be able to say that will change my mind. Mario is also the most awesome person out there he wished me happy birthday on Instagram what a legend.
Amen!
And Meshuggah too ........Gojira and Meshugga
@@STIXAHOY If i could only listen to 2 bands for the rest of my life, it would be those 2.
@@viktor821 and this right here is why we need the damn sea shepherd EP
That has and ever will exist!!! Truth!🤘🤘🤘
I admire Mario so much. This is the first time I've seen an extended interview from him and I smiled the whole episode. Thank you Craig for giving us this!💜
I'm so glad Mario finally felt comfortable with his English speaking to do this.
Been anticipating this conversation for years!
Dude he's gotten so much better. I remember him speaking in English in like 2014 or something, compared to this,it's amazing how good he talks now!
Thank you for including stuff for us non-drummers
Everyone is a drummer.
@@bigmonk802 They just don't know yet.
Watching Craig fan boy for an hour is something of a beauty to watch
I don't blame him 😂
I've been lucky enough to see Gojira twice and each time they killed it. It makes sense Mario practices so much especially after seeing how much of a damn machine he is behind the kit. Easily one of the best metal bands out there.
Every time I’ve seen them it’s the most powerful show I’ve ever seen. I must see them whenever they come to town now. They have disappointed me yet
Is it OK that I'm not a drummer but I'm so excited to listen to this guys?
Same here
it's normal! this is a seriously high quality conversation, with a lot of information and advice shared very organically
You can tell the Duplantier's have good hearts
The Link is a masterpiece and is not given enough attention in their catalog. Probably one of the most technical metal albums ever produced.
Killer podcast. Best possible person to ask this guy the questions that fellow drummers & fans of his really wanna know the answers to. You did your homework & came prepared. Great fucking job. I was enthralled. Mario is a fucking class act.
This is the first one I’ve watched where you can literally see the adoration of the guest in Craig’s face. You can 100% tell this is a very big deal for him. + Mario is an absolute gentleman.
Years of grustling have come to fruition. Very nice to see you thrive!
Mario is only of the few people in the world were I would be glued to the screen listening to every word, fantastic podcast
Mario is like two different souls in one human. He is so cool and down to earth during conversation, and he looks so different while he is playing.
Mario’s humility is very endearing.
Mario has the biggest heart man. What a stellar example for the drumming community and world on how to be an excellent human/drummer.
Love the fact that he takes his job so seriously and wants to perform at his best. Just total dedication.
One of the best, if not the best metal drummer today. And Gojira is prolly the best live band I've ever seen.
So I’ve finished now and…that might be the best podcast you’ve done, Craig. That’s a real highlight in the catalogue. Huge congratulations!!!
i want to hear mario drum on a desk for one hour non stop
Mario's passion and enthusiasm is just wonderful to see.
Holy crap!!! I've been a huge Gojira fan for years now and I've always wanted to hear more from Mario. This is amazing!
This guy is so humble you'd never realize he's an absolute beast behind the kit. Had the honor of seeing them in 2019. They just seem incapable of putting on a less-than-amazing show. It's also really cool hearing Mario speak at length and deeply about his technique and approach when I'm normally used to only hearing Joe do the bulk of interviews.
1. Dynamics 2. dynamics & 3. dynamics. Mario understands this so well and is such a master of feel. The crowd knows. Can't wait to see you guys August 15th.
Mario is so down to earth, thank you so much for providing this Craig
10:24 “All The Tears” is for me the hardest Gojira song on drums and it such a amazing song
+ esoteric surgery
Y'all ever tried From The Sky? :'DDDD
@@DeltaKT from the sky is less faster but goddamn the endurance is out of this world, and personally when I’m playing double bass I can sometimes just let my legs go without thinking about them and play some “from the sky” songs that are for me a struggle with mental more than with legs, All the tears is just extremely fast double bass burst lol and I just can’t
Can’t wait to watch this
I’m not even a drummer, but I love every second of this podcast🤘🏼
Have known of Gojira for 15+ years but Craig’s hype over the past few years grew them on me for sure.
I absolutely love Mario, I saw Gojira on last year in Tampa, Florida on Marios birthday. Joe had the crowd sing him happy birthday to him :). Such an amazing drummer and band. Keep it up!!!!
This reminded me of Matt Heafy of Trivium, he’s also very strict about his exercise and guitar playing. They play the whole show as a warm up before the actual show.
First time I've ever heard another drummer mention that the click sounds slow when full of Adrenaline, my band will turn to me when I'm not playing with a click (which i struggle with) and say "dude that was waaay too fast" and I'll just be shocked until I watch the footage back later and realise I'm rushing at least 5-10bpm faster!
Great Interview, Mario is King!
Such an inspiration, very human person, even if I'm not a drummer, I'll never stop to try to slap that The Art of Dying intro with my hands, trying to coordinate it with my feets...
Good to see how much Mario's English has improved over the years.
Great interview! Didn't expect to watch the 1 hour duration straight threw, but i did.
man... how cool is this guy?! Super down to earth and what youd want a musical hero to be.
Man i love Mario. Last year Gojira played in Buenos Aires 🇦🇷 and he STOLE the show. His presence on the stage, the drum sound, all was perfect. Massive respect for the man and the group. I cannot wait for they come back. Great great podcast bro. 👏🤟
He deserves to be great; he’s so disciplined and hard working.
Favorite episode ever. Mario is what made me buy a kit after being a guitar player and have never looked back ❤
Absolute legend chatting with another legend. This was great! Thanks Craig and Mario!
EDIT: When two great drummers have solid multiple minute segments trading back and forth “badugabadugabadop” rythms is golden.
Saw them in Cardiff. Right in the front pit. I absolutely lost my shit when The Way of All Flesh started. What a huge surprise, I had the time of my life witnessing that, quite ironic considering the content of the song. It saddened me to hear mario didn't get a strong reaction for that song. Great podcast, thank you for the amazing guests Craig and great chats
Art of dying was incredible that night as well 🔥
God Mario’s English has gotten so much better the last few years! Great guy, can’t wait to see them in august
How can you not LOVE this man???
Watching this a second time.
The guy is just a great human.
You can see the fan boy coming through occasionally mate haha
We all do it.
Shout for Nick Barker to be on the podcast 👌🏻
Absolutely loved this episode! What an incredible guest to have on!
An awesome interview Craig. Keep this up!
Mario has been one of my most favorite drummers for a while, and to hear him and see how cool and respectful he is makes me like him even more. I can’t wait to see them next month 🔥
Such a good time to listen to this conversation !
Mario is such a great guy! Great pod Craig!!
Thanks for this podcast guys,brilliant.
Even as someone who knows nothing about drums you had me hooked listening to the whole podcast, you're both so passionate it's contagious
Love this episode Craig! Great job keeping the vibes high and opening Mario up 🙏🏼🙌🏼
This is an absolute treasure! Thank you for doing this.
@Craig Reynolds Just to say, your interview skills have improved so much even since the Garstka interview. You gave a lot of space for Mario to speak and didnt press him on something that might have been uncomfortable to speak about (the funny metallica moment). Really enjoying the conversational tone to this.
thank you! I’m trying!
he also didn't have like half a mason jar of whiskey haha
Great interview man. He seems so humble & kind.
When he was talking about the “Remembrance” breakdown, it’s always reminded me of early Lamb of God/Burn the Priest. Absolute prime technical breakdowns, if only we could go back
Fantastic, loved it!
Brilliant episode Craig! Mario is such an icon
Craig, you have no idea how much I needed this podcast. Thank you!
Phenomenal interview. Awesome to see you finally get him on. I was patiently waiting for this to be posted. I feel like the interview was so casual that the time just flew by. All of a sudden your doing the dream festival and I’m like, shit it’s almost done! I finally got to see them in NYC with Deftones last year and it was an absolute blast.
This is one of the best episodes you've done Reynlord, thank you very much!
This is gold! Inspiring stuff. Love Mario's dedication and discipline to the craft
Loved this interview. Great people having a great conversation 🙌✨
Such a incredibly candid and informative interview. Mario is such an inspiration to us all. Thank you Craig
Such a great episode Craig ! One of the two coolest and badass drummers chatting together.
Favorite episode of the pod yet!
Best video ever. Thank you Craig. Felt like I was sitting with friends and enjoying every moment of the conversation. Much love🫶🏻
Best one yet! Didn’t want it to end haha. Super chilled and natural 😊
Such a cool , humble guy. Love it 👌
Daaaamn, I'm so Happy to see Mario doing this with you.
Thank you so much ! ♥️
This is one of the best interviews I've ever seen! Your interviewing process was perfect and you asked so many questions I've always wanted to hear. Mario was amazing. SUPER props to you!!
Blown away by how Liquid Fire came about. GODDAMN!!!
And why did I only see the snare head after the 1h mark?
This is such a great interview . Well done Craig ! Mario is such a nice guy .
I am so stoked for you creg, this was sick
Amazing. Great convo. Mario is the best.
So much love for this episode! Saw Gojira twice in the last 12 months and both sets where incredible. Mario seems like such a humble nice guy!
Oh HELL yeah! Can't wait to watch this all.
Only halfway through and this is so fucking cool, man. Two of my favorite drummers, two of the biggest giants in metal music today, sitting down and talking about all the shit I want to hear. What a fantastic episode. Thank you for all you do, Craig, and congrats for all the success you're reaping. You fucking deserve it, dude. 🥁
So happy for you Craig, continued wishes for continued success 🖤🖤🖤
thanks for that man! such good interviewing
Absolutely fantastic episode! As a drummer this pure gold! also loved the dream festival part and justice for lars.
LETS FUCKING GO.
Craig, you're consistently putting out phenomenal content for drummers all around the world. This shit is gold. This is my third time coming back to the video because there was a lot of great content in here.
Thank you both so much for this! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this one, and feel happier than I have felt for ages. Two of my favourite drummers. Wow. Listening with an idiotic grin on my face. ❤
i wanted to save this for after work tonight to give it the proper attention it deserves but ahhh i can't wait! it's too good!
i wish this was 4 hours long. best pod ive seen
Wow guys ! Thank you so much for this interview 🎉 , I will probably see it a hundred times 🔥
The fact that you focus the interview on drummer's perspective is awesome. I felt understood in a lot of points 🙏🏻 I don't feel so alone jaja
Thank you so so much for bringing Mario , he is a huge part of my foundations as a drummer !!
I'm so saddened by the lack of love for old Gojira from the fans.
same
What! There's literally thousands of Gojira fans blasting every album from Terra incognita to From Mars to sirius to their ambient work Maciste, every album except Magma and Fortitude 😅
If anything, I'd say the reason they play mostly slower newer stuff is to satisfy the mainstream and because of
... Their age.
i literally went through terra incognita all the way to the way of all flesh today in a single pull..
To be honest, I find Terra Incognita and The Link to be ... rough. I just do not really enjoy the sound of the music. Certain songs are absolutely brilliant, but others just fall flat for me.
But every single song from From Mars to Sirius and forward is an absolute hit for me.
@@perhapsyes2493 Terra Incognita is raw prog death metal, little technicality to it.
The Link is one of Gojira's most technical (experimental) albums in their entire discography. Every track in the album is built on Mario's drumming exercises (the outro for Remembrance is originally one of Mario's drum exercises), so you could say (in a way) the entire album was written mostly by Mario! It's a great album to start with if you're looking to get more into prog/technical death metal. Cheers
I will see gojira in May. Im excited about it!🤘💥
Getting to see Gojira for the first time at the end of April at their Austin, TX show after years of being a fan. So much respect for these dudes on and off the stage, great interview. So hyped. Really hoping we get The Art of Dying on that set list, what a journey that song is.
Yooo so am I, super fucking exited!
I know you enjoyed seeing them live! I’ve seen the three time and can’t wait for the fourth 😅
Best band ever. So humble, such a pleasure to listen to him. Great podcast!
Amazing episode perfectly paired with the downbeat USA store! So good!!
Great ep Craig, thanks
Awesome interview!!!
