    Here's everything you want to know about the new Garmin Edge 520 Plus, which includes support for mapping, turn by turn directions, and even some new features like Extended Display from Garmin watches. Plus, it now supports rider to rider messaging (like the Edge 1030 and soon the Edge 820). I dive into all the details on it.

    testing this 520 plus & Wahoo bolt and gotta say i really want to like the Bolt b/c of reading many negative past reviews of Garmin. But the 520 plus for me really is better. Why? 1. Maps are more detailed while riding anywhere it gives you the names of upcoming streets. 2. Garmin has a incidents detects feature that allows 3 people to be notified if it detects trouble, i've tested it myself. 3. If you purchase the Varia radar/light product now you have a rearview radar warning for upcoming vehicles & that works great giving you extra peace of mind. And the Bolt just basically is dependant on the app & riding applications such as Strava to complete it. Ex. There's no connection between Wahoo the website & the app.
    Where as with Garmin's website I'm able to view a whole new world such as Dashboard for all of my rides, connections, training, health stats, groups, training which provides you with riding maps info just by typing in your location then choosing a course then sync/ uploading/ sending it to your device all in 1 location.

    Hi, great review. I currently have the 520 which elevation gets screwed up when the unit is in the rain. I have to always use the strava elevation correction tool once I get home. Some say it's the barometric sensor that gets clogged up with water. Does this have the same issue. Thanks so much if you have any info on this.

    Great review, great information too. After watching I decided to check out the 820 because I want to tour with it and have the ability if needed to enter an address and have it take me there. But what's upsetting is after I read all the comments below, and elsewhere, is that it seems most people hate the Garmin, it's slow, it has poor to incredibly bad navigation, to people who just plain hated it. Then I read other places that Garmin customer service is the worst of the worst. Wow, I never thought Garmin would be that far out of the sewer with a product. So now after thinking about it, I'll just buy Adventure Cycling touring maps...yes paper maps, I was brought on paper maps so using those again will be no big deal. Then I can resort to my phone if I need to be taken to a particular address. That's really too bad, I was looking for something convenient to use while touring but everything I've read here and elsewhere is that these GPS computers are just plain bad, so why spend $500 for something that's just going to be an irritation?

    How does the app syncing between the unit and smartphone both iOS and Android? As part of the reason why I shun out from Garmin is caused of the nightmare stories I heard on their mobile apps and sync issues.
    Also, what are the options to extend this unit battery life for those who need it? With the Wahoo you can just plug in an external power bank while the unit is recording the ride.

    thanks for the video and your article, (did the followup "real review"ever happen? can't find it on your site).
    my questions:
    1) if you don't need turn-by-turn, can you disable it and save battery, but still just see a map and where you are on the map? i'm a mountain biker and just want to follow a trail, i don't need turn by turn, i just want to follow the trail and find my way back to it if i go the wrong way
    2) is it easy/possible to save battery by keeping the screen on, and only turning it on when you need to look at the stats?
    3) i ride a lot both in EU and north america. seems like the single-region thing is a pain. you're saying you need to use 3rd party software every time you want to switch? is it a lot of hassle? is there a difference in quality of the maps using the 3rd party?
    thank you!

    Got the 820, navigation is pretty poor and point of interest simply takes too long to use whilst you wait. Too much data and results in loading time which is slower as an 1989 Macintosh. Coupled with poor battery and touch screen I’ll be looking at getting this unit or even the wahoo mid year

    • @jfosorio
      @jfosorio Před 5 lety

    Just to be clear. If I have my phone with me how complicated it is to navigate to specific location. Is it fast process like I choose location on the phone and already have course from my current location which I upload on the Garmin? Another question - if I miss the turn will Garmin: a) show me turn by turn how to get back to the point where I left the course, b) show me turn by turn how to get to the course but not to the point where I left but the closest point of the course to my current location or c) just tell me that I left the course and won't tell me how to get back.

    I found the Edge 520 almost useless for navigation. When i try and use it for navigating it usually fails and i ride around completely lost. My main issue is the small and low res screen makes it too hard to use. They should skip the navigation altogether and save it for the big screened 1030.

    • @just6979
      @just6979 Před 6 lety +2

      Is the issue that you get lost because it fails (how? loses signal? skips turns? doesn't keep up?) or that you get lost because you miss turns because it's small and hard to see?

    • @kevinmills3329
      @kevinmills3329 Před 6 lety

    Do these things track you if you don't use a route? I mean how Strava tracks you from record to stop, i never put a route in because I wander and explore. I want Garmin to track my random wanderings, does it do that? I'm asking because my eye is on the 520 and the Fenix 3, I just want to make sure.

      I personally don't keep my smart phone out. The reason someone like me is looking for a Garmin 520 plus is because:
      1) I want to see live data of my speed, cadence, and heart rate
      2) I want to see a live map with directions, especially as I'm getting into longer rides where I pre-plan my route before I leave
      3) Leaving your smart phone turned on with a map or strava open, also in direct sunlight, just wait and see how hot your phone is going to be when you stop and take it off of the bike. For me in 95 degree heat in direct sun on a lot of my rides, I wouldn't risk my phone getting killed over that.

    Seems that Garmin has failed to really improve this unit over the old 520. Still seems sluggish when loading, with the same lag when using the buttons. Hope navigation is better, the old 520 is way too buggy and cannot distinguish corners from turns. It does pack a lot of features, but is not user-friendly enough. Modifying data fields is quite cumbersome for instance. Seems like development has been standing still at Garmin. Pity because the old edge 500 was a real leap forward...

    Thank you Wahoo for pushing Garmin to make better products...The Edge 130 is something a lot of retired Edge 500 users may enjoy. Despite their efforts, I still think an Android based system would suit better for navigation due to the Google Maps standard. Hammerhead Karoo would be that option but they don't make a sleek of a product compared to Wahoo or Garmin. btw, I guess Garmin adjusted the prices? The 520 Plus is now $329

      ok, I know a bunch of guys with the bolt and non have mentioned any bugs and neither has anyone with a Element. Everyone I know with a garmin complains about bugs and failures. I just had Garmin refund me for my 1000 as non of the units (4 replacements) ever worked properly

    Sad, slight upgrade in my opinion, although I am not interested in the maps feature on a bike computers anyway. we need a camera instead of the radar it's 2018 already....

    What’s this unit like in 2024? I can buy one for 50 bucks from a work friend.

    I prefer to explore and just use my Edge 25 I bought for £65 in a sale. I’ll use my iPhone X if I get lost. What we want is a 520 size that does mapping! Should have called the 520 plus something else.

    I have got an Edge 520 Plus and still have connection issues. I cannot for the life of me understand why every Bluetooth speaker or earphone can connect pair and connect in a split second apart from being too far away from the phone to stay connected through whatever might happen. Still, these blo*dy bike computers cannot manage to connect correctly every single time if they are sitting right next to my phone on my desk. Let alone out on a ride when I really am not in the mood to start fiddling with tiny buttons and 'wait' - like 10mins on the side of the road - before anything happens...

    I don't see why we don't just have a small chip surgically implanted in our foreheads so we can listen to music, talk to our friends, play video games, see our stats, have water bottle fill percentages, reminders for how and when we should eat........ Let's just be computers! It's kind of comical! Good review though, thanks!

      George Pantazis wahoo is just as bad as far as malfunction. I had one for a year and a half and screen completely gave out on me. Warranty was expired so I’m stuck with a $250 piece of junk. I’d say aim low and get minimal computer if you don’t want to use your smartphone.

    I know there are lots of information, but the speed of your presentation makes it difficult to follow them. You might be an expert of the product, the watcher might not be. Slow it down a bit, please? I don't have the edge 520 either! The speed of your presentation became just like a blur, you mentioned about the map can guide you home, but make no mention how to set that up which I think would be very useful? Furthermore, what button you are pressing on the machine no one can see as there are 6 buttons! No use at all sorry!
