How do you know they did? Were you around when he died? Or do you have some older relatives who knew him?

@@captainalex8003 Because it was said and written down by the people who were there at this period in Hollywood history...

He was largely forgotten when he died. I think you are talking about Columbia Pictures Harry Cohn. When he died he had a large funeral, and Red Skelton quipped: "People always come out for something they want to see."

Actually, I checked the Clark Gable story on Snopes; he did drive drunk, hit a tree, and had to go to the hospital, but no one was killed, and the dates appear to be 1933 and 1945. So, that story appears to be false. Also, I would suggest running photos that sync with what is being discussed rather than the same photos in a loop, but yes, L.B. Mayer was a horrible person who had no problem giving his child stars drugs and turning them into addicts for profit.

He was sacked in1951, cuz MGM had gone three years without a major Academy Award, which provoked further conflict between Mayer and Nicolas Schenck who was the boss. He passed away in 1957

Karma: Judy had enough of Ethel's domination, and cast her out of her life when she reached 18. Ethel died alone of a heart attack in a parking lot.

Thalberg was a producer not director.

Mayer was loved and hated by many - he was a contradictory personality - both kind and cruel. Joan Crawford described him as, "A beautiful man. The best friend I ever had." When Judy Garland was hospitalized because of her drug-taking, Mayer personally paid all her medical bills.
Elizabeth Taylor hated him and once told him "You and your studio can go to hell." He never spoke to her after that, but did not fire her.

Had Mayer been a boxer at one time?

No. He started out as a scrap metal dealer in Nova Scotia. Read his bio - a fascinating story of a struggle for success. He is to be respected for what he achieved, if nothing else.
