It's all about culture. Portugal is always included within the Mediterranean countries, even if it's on the Altantic ocean. A person from Huelva, on the coast of Southern Spain, does not see the Mediterranean sea either, nor do many people from the province of Cádiz, founded by the Phoenicians, who travelled and traded the whole Mediterranean sea, including, of course, the town of Chiclana, on the Atlantic. Considering them continental, or whatever, makes no sense. A person from Tarifa is Mediterranean and a person from Chiclana is not? Not all Spaniards live on the coast, anyway. A person from Seville lives closer to the Atlantic Ocean than to the Mediterranean sea. I guess they are "Atlantic" then, and yet they are not more similar to a German than to an Italian or Greek. Most of today's Spain has a common history and that history took place around the Mediterranean sea for thousands of years. Food, music, law, knowledge, literature and culture. The very name "Europe" arrived from across the Mediterranean sea, Roman law is still the basis of the legal system in most of Europe, and many agricultural products where introduced into the Spanish Peninsula by those who came from around the Mediterranean sea. And there is so much more...

It looks like here as in many places "cliches aka stereotypes", while making comedy.
Tends to make many people laugh, i find it boring, not just here, everywhere, when you make fun of people from other countries due to stereotypes, will never find it funny!
Here, back home, everywhere, give me performances from Jack Dee, Lee Evans, Billy Connolly.
    Peter Kay, Ricky Gervais.
From yesteryear like the 2 Ronnies, the guys from Only Fools and Horses, to mention but a few, present and past in the U.K. Anytime, and i will laugh at these British type or kind of comedy and humour.
Bring cliches, and you can enjoy them yourselves.
Any cliche, about my country Spain, France, Germany, Italy, the US., and many more!
(Stereotypes, sell very well in the U.K. even in adverts or commercials).
