  • Tongan geologists watched a massive plume of ash rise in the sky during a continuous eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano on Jan. 14.
    The Tonga Geological Services released images of what they said was a 5 km wide column of ash, gas, and steam rising 18-20 km above sea level.
    On Saturday, Jan. 15, a further volcanic eruption triggered tsunami alerts for several Pacific nations, Australia, New Zealand and on the Pacific coastlines of Japan and the U.S.

    As a person living in Tonga I am just as shock to see the effect our volcanic eruption had on other countries as far as America. Our internet just got restored as of today and seeing just how massive the eruption was I am forever grateful to be able to survive such event in my life. Thank you all for the prayers 🙏.

    Warmest greetings from Argentina to the people of the Pacific islands and all those which have Pacific coasts. In Peru, two women died when a 2m wave hit them. The government hadn't warned the population. Go on Tonga, we will all help you.

    Coincidentally, the Islands of Tonga sit right on the recently discovered continent of Zealandia. That explains why the volcano erupted in the ocean, because the new continent is forming as we speak. I wish the people of Tonga a safe and speedy recovery from this disaster.

    • @davidford3115

      The "continent" is nothing new. It was exposed land during the last glaciation period when global ocean levels were much lower. The Graben itself is at least 83 million years old, with some of the rocks going back as far as 540 million years ago.

      Yeah. “Seas”, which are surface waves, are caused by weather. “Swells” on the other hand, are are waves that are caused seismic activity and can go all the way across an ocean. The terms “Seas” and “Swells” are very commonly confused (and misused) terms. Back in my seafaring days we had to learn to recognize and identify each wave type and record it in the ship’s logbook once every four hours. Often times the seas and the swells would be traveling in very different directions from one another. In this case, an underwater volcano caused a seismic disruption, and hence, swells that will travel indefinitely until reaching landfall.

    • @fadeben9839
      @fadeben9839 Před 2 lety +1

      Because it was a bomb that triggered it. No underwater volcano ever erupted like that. Ripple effects are only caused when you drop something in the water.

    If anything, this eruption is going to cause global *cooling* for as long as maybe a couple years. While it's gaseous contribution to the atmosphere doesn't help, we are a factor that contributes substantially more, so yeah, "volcanoes" don't equal "carbon tax is stupid".

    In the sattelite view there is another simultanious blast in the upper right corner of the video. Can anybody explain that to me? Has this something to do with the earth plates or so? Or are these just clouds? If so, why is there a simultanious event in the clouds? I am surprised, because it really seems to be nearly simultanious.

      🤦‍♀️🙄 Volcanic eruptions are NORMAL... this one was quite predictable as well- NZ and other countries nearby that monitor seismic activity, detected increasing activity in the days leading up to the big eruption and 24 or more hours before the big eruption, the volcano was throwing ash and such into the air (which was irregular for that volcano- unlike a continuously erupting volcano that does puffs all the time).... this video is showing how stupid ppl are- NZ should’ve forced those boats to move long before the eruption, Tonga should’ve evacuated right away by sea and air with the minor eruptions going off first, and the idiots having a beach day already knew of a tsunami warning (idk why the gov workers were risking their lives to reiterate the fact a tsunami was happening) 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

      It's erupted again after this large one, but it likely won't continue for long. It will go back into the phase where the newly excavated caldera begins it's push back toward the ocean surface. One or more cones will develop (like the islands that had popped up that are very likely gone now), and some day it'll pop again. Probably in the 10,000-100,000 year range.

    🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Why didn’t New Zealand move all those boats?!?! The tsunami warning came quite quickly and with all the activity they detected prior to the eruption, all those boats should’ve been forced to move way before... really hope they’re cleaning up the oil spillage from that 100% avoidable disaster.... also idk why Tonga didn’t evacuate way before the full on eruption given that they’re saying countries like NZ detected seismic activity of significance way before hand and the volcano had been having minor eruptions prior to the big one the day (or even longer) before 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ Generally when a volcano starts spewing some ash like it did way before (a day or more), and it’s not normal for that volcano, it’s going to have a big eruption- especially given the seismic activity detected by other countries as well... this was 100% predictable and they should’ve evacuated right away 🤷🏼‍♀️ But those ppl on the beach (I believe in Asia given the tuktuks) just show how dumb ppl are even today 🤦‍♀️ Why not have a beach day during a tsunami warning 🙄🙄🙄🙄

    • @thirstfast1025
      @thirstfast1025 Před 2 lety

      You can't just mobilize entire fleets or evacuate entire islands every time you hear seismic activity. It happens literally all the time around active volcanoes. Same with small ash and gas plumes. By your logic, the entire Pacific NW of USA should be evacuated, nay, abandonded because there are hundreds if not thousands of earthquakes and off-gasssing from Yellowstone every month. Maybe spend a week as an intern somewhere that monitors seismic activity, you'll sound less dumb.
