  • This video provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the shock absorber on Whirlpool front-load washing machines. The most common reason for replacing a shock absorber is when the washer is vibrating more than usual, all the leveling legs are properly adjusted, and one or more of the shock absorbers is broken.

    Thank you, I had my suspicions of the bad shocks because of the leaking oil but im sure now that's the problem

    Oh wow, thanks! I just bought my Whirlpool front loader in May and I think a shock absorber is broken already. It’s still under warranty, so I’m just going to call Lowe’s to get it fixed.

    My washer is 6 years old will new shocks or dampeners decrease spin vibrations? I ask because my Kenmore HE4T moves and the bearings/spider are fine.
    On another unit Maytag 4000 Series I have (same as Kenmore HE3T) I need to test the RPM sensor in the motor which if it is bad will require me to replace the motor. My Maytag 4000 series (same as HE3T) will not go high-speed spin in [C08] service mode only low-speed spin, but in regular wash modes, it will not spin clothes at all (considerably wet clothes at end of cycle, but the pump/hoses are clear and confirmed working). I just replace the MCU because of a burnt trace(unit would only beep 3 times). Unit motor/tach ohm tested fine. any help or just point me in the right direction. These unit have no imbalance sensor so I am looking hard at the RPM sensor on the motor with the two red wires. I tested the sensor (pins 4 & 5 red) without moving the drum and got the 115 ohms.

    How do you know when to replace the machine's shocks? (assuming one or more haven't physically broken). Do the original shocks wear out after so many years? How much vibration or shaking is normal on these washing machines? I have a Kenmore HE4t, all 4 shocks appear intact and I took one loose just to verify it has resistance to movement but no idea if it's the correct amount of resistance. Thanks for any info!

    Love your videos repairclinic. I have this washer (HE3) with four broken shocks. How terrible do you think it would be to replace these shocks with 4 springs?

    • @repairclinic
      @repairclinic  Před 10 lety +2

      We cannot advise that. They should be replaced with the correct shocks.

  • @repairclinic
    @repairclinic  Před 11 lety

    We do not recommend adding extra springs. If the springs are weak you can replace them but adding more springs will cause more noise because they will rub together and you will not get the right balance in the spin cycle.

    Can adding a shock add stability to the washer. On a whirlpool there are 2 shocks on the left an one on the right centered on the unit. But there are mounts in the washer on the right side towards the rear an to the front. My washer had only 3. Can I add a fourth an place them like the left side or no.

    • @dandavis2022
      @dandavis2022 Před 7 lety

      @Jemma, yes. This is precisely what you will hear when the struts are too worn. I'm not suggesting this is your specific problem, but the banging noise is indicative of worn struts.

    If the machine still bangs around after replacing the shock absorbers... what would be the next thing to fix? (Also found plastic shavings inside the tub... guessing thats from the plastic outer tub due to the banging around). I know this is an old video, but help would be appreciated. (Kenmore Elite Model 11045087)

      Did you ever find out any info? I'm having the same problem. So much so that the plastic shavings clogged the pump.

    • @KuKoKaNuKo
      @KuKoKaNuKo Před 4 lety +1

      @@jreg0028 The shavings ended up being from the plastic outer-drum. Due to the imbalance the steel inner-drum ended up shaving the outer drum. Apparently the main bearing had also gone out and had dented the back-plate of the machine. After spending $60 on new shocks the machine still clunked around so I bit the bullet and bought a new washer. Main reason was... I looked up pricing for the plastic outer drum and the back half alone was $170- $256 (including the bearing which is machine-pressed in) and the front half was $56-ish I believe with who knows what else I would have to end up replacing. Then also comes the dismantling and repair (wasn't even sure if that was something I could've done) so a new washer ended up being just slightly more for a top-load and it was installed for me and the old washer removed. I didn't have to do anything.

    While your at it, add two additional drum springs. This keeps the drum from sagging and causing the bellow seal from leaking at the door.

    Soooo what happens when the metal mount for the absorer is broken? XD

    • @repairclinic
      @repairclinic  Před 9 lety

      Rennie Ash The shock locks into the bottom pan of the washing machine. We can look it up for your model, but we will need the model number. Please contact customer service at 1-800-269-2609 and an agent can help you. We probably won't have it pictured on the website because that sort of part rarely fails.

      ***** it's an lg intellowasher. Part of the metal bracket that hold the pin is broken off so the damper is hanging. It doesn't help that the machine dropped during a move :-P

  • @kailuakeith

    NOT USEFUL. IN FACT, IT IS HARMFUL. The voice should say to always twist the shock to the left to remove. Also the video is bad, when removes the top side he twists to the right and you hear a snap, which is wrong and probably broke part of the shock. When he removes the bottom he correctly twists left. There is a stop that deters you from twisting right. If you force it, you break part of the shock in case you one or two are still usable. They should take it slower and be more descriptive at this critical part. ALSO, they should mention that using the pliers you should try to grab the shock as flush to where it is mounted as possible, not at any arbitrary angle, but flush.

    Because they need to sell parts.
    I am not an expert and I can tell you how to replace the whole washing machine. Buy a new one. Problems solved.
