  • With the verbose comments in my last video. I had to ask myself why does stalker mean so much to all these people to bicker in the comments of a CZcams video? Why did I make a stalker CZcams channel? What made stalker so interesting that it has kept people intrigued for all these years? Today we talk about GSC Game Worlds beloved franchise Stalker. (S.T.A.L.K.E.R.)
If you enjoy please hit that sub button, we are almost to 1000, I would love to get there before S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 comes out! / @lonerjb

The atmosphere I'd argue. I've played the OG trilogy, Radiophobia 3, LFO, ABR, Anomaly, Call of Chernobyl, Old World Add On, Gamma and EFP and the one thing they have in common is the Zone and A-Life.
Honestly A-Life makes the Zone feel so alive and unique and I've never played a game series that has close to that level of AI reactivity

    • @lonerjb
      @lonerjb  Před měsícem +4

Yea I love the atmosphere in stalker. I have a video from this time last year talking about how atmospheric it is and how the A life systems play into that to make the world feel alive. I think that kind of led me in the direction of the immersion definition. It is the atmosphere, ai, gameloop, etc... all play into how immersive the experience is and should be. Thanks for checking out the video and leaving your thoughts!

I wish A-life system was more complex with more depth like OLR 3.0
You had stalkers hunting for documents, artifacts, and other stalkers. Every single one of them had their own purpose to BE in The Zone, and if Stalker is looking for revenge, he will leave the Zone after he fulfilled it. Stalkers would sell artifacts and loot not only to traders, but other stalkers, and would sell it to traders only in case if nobody is interested.

What makes this game special is the lonely freedom and escapism of the anarchistic mysterious zone, where rules arent written but your actions have consequences, you are always vurnerable and on the edge
Its all unscripted, yet you are left with organic memorable moments that feel brutally real.
Heres just one, thunder and heavy rain are all i hear, in the dark im retrieving a package from a renegade camp, after clearing them out, one is left wounded in the rain and i walk up with my handgun to put him out hearing him call out "mama", straight after i spot an unarmed renegade who runs away after seeing what happened, i chase after and take aim as he i running into the darkness, two shots and its back to the sound of a stormy night
the game is at its best when played in ironman mode where your death is permanent, all the qualities that make the game special get highlighted when everything is on the line at all times, one wrong step and its over
the zone doesn't care about you and you arent special, you are just one of many stalkers, you make your own path to whatever it is you desire like everyone else
Sometimes the game presents you with an ongoing faction fight and you can either just watch from the sidelines and remain neutral, or finally decide your true alignment and turn the tide by betraying one faction and becoming loyal to one, maybe one stalker will be left wounded on the ground and you can decide to put them out of their misery or help them, its your choice.
Nothing beats the atmosphere and feeling of running through pitch black darkness in stormy rain with nothing but a flashlight and your weapon, listening out for threats and ready to unload and anything that moves, if you get caught off guard your playthrough might just be over. Truly the level of immersion cannot be described and has to be experienced first hand, its brutal and ugly.
You are free to be whatever you want, you can have a good heart and be a reliable trusted ally to most factions, never taking dirty tasks like assasinations and keep a clean reputation. Or you can be a selfish greedy adventurer loyal for no one but yourself.
The sense of progression is enormous, not only does your gear get more capable to of taking harder fights but you can notice how the stalkers around you become friendlier and start greeting you often as your reputation rises toward the top, you begin as a rookie struggling with psuedo dogs in cordon and end up leading a squad of followers to the. center

Great summary. It really is the only single player experience that has me sweating it out; even scared to continue into the underground at the prospect of the horrible noises I hear. Every combat encounter is to be taken seriously.

In my childhood, I waited a very long time for the release of the first part. By the time it came out, I had already finished school and entered university. Idk how to explain it but when you watch the gameplay commentary videos in your bedroom, during rain, shut the door off, and have a old yellow lamp, makes you feel like watching them with your pda.

A-Life, its atmosphere, and the big green light from the devs for modders to have their way with it.
What I get most excited for is the potential in the A-Life system. It's limitless, already so good that you could forgo any plot and just be a zoner like me. Look at Anomaly or GAMMA, they clearly saw that potential.
It's the age-old "be who you want to be" ideal that games like the Elder Scrolls and No Man's Sky games aim for. Hunter, hitman, trader, explorer, artifact spelunker, guide... You can genuinely be all those different things in Stalker and it still feels complete.

As a person born in Ukraine in mid 80’s that grew up in 90’s i can tell you that STALKER is a metaphore for tjose times. The decaying ruins is a great metaphor for decaying USSR that has just colapsed. The people of the USSR plumeted into survival mode in this new reality. This new reality was dangerous it was brutal but There was a romantic idea of posibility and hope amidst the chaos. The artifcats were the remnants of the old empire that now were up for grabs. The anomalies are the variouse dangers old and new mixed in something not sean before that were a product of the colapse. Anyone who knows how dangerous it was ro open a business in the 90’s one one hand and how high risk how reward of an endevour this was will understand what i’n talking about. Doing business was a dangerous but high reward endevour where you had to deal with criminals and corrupt cops that wanted in on the profits. Corruption and violence solved problem. Opening a business was this wild and dangerous endevour as after the fall of the USSR the governement did jot have the means to effectivly fight crime and in many cases colaborated with the criminals to aquire the wealth that was up for grabs after the fall of the USSR.
The factions in stalker are the different type of people thatvwmweged after the fall of USSR in Ukraine. The bandits are literaly people who code crime and violence to take advantage of weak governemnt and become rich by any means (torture, extortion, executions etc.). The loaners were ordinary people that had morals and did what was neaded to survive. They like everyone participated in corruption because There was no option not to, but did not want to become criminals. Duty resemble the old high ranking members of the regime mainly from inteligence community ex KGB, ex spies, ex police, army etc that were frustrated the the colapse of the regime they served and benefited from. Desite this they had inside knowledge on what parts of the old state companies had calue and how they could be aquired. They would prefer that the old regime never fell, but as it did they want to controll who has acces to its wealth and to aquire and consolidate the wealth in their hands and rebuild the old regime in a new vision. Freedom are people who are happy with the colapse and changes they see hope of a better democratic future they are optimists and reomantics that want everyone to participate in the changes brought by the new reality. Dury in tbe original speak Russian exclusivly. Freedom speak Ukeainian or broken Ukrainian. STALKER feels like 90’s Ukeaine on so many levels. It had a wild West feel to it. That had a mixture of real danger, great opportunity and promise of a better future that everyne brave enough to take the leap and live the adventure. This is what Stalker encapculates.

The only complaint I have about stalker is that I with I would have known about the franchise sooner. I picked up gamma late last year after never playing keyboard and mouse before. • @CarlWheatley-wi2cl
    @CarlWheatley-wi2cl Před 13 dny +1

First thing it does differently, almost uniquely, is the single player "everyman" sandbox as opposed to the single player "power fantasy" sandbox. Secondly, the crazy, broken, brilliant dynamism of A-Life that immerses you in ways that very few games can achieve; finding your former travel companion face-down dead in the middle of nowhere, on the other side of the zone weeks after you parted company, bandits that you thought were dead playing possum in a completely random unscripted event, watching a stalker kill another, loot him and then walk to a trader to sell and complaining about prices on the PDA after he does so. You can go on and on about those Stalker "moments", we all have them if we spend any amount of time in the zone. Lastly, the zone itself of course, the immersion, the weather, the places and the vibe. Nothing else quite like it.

I am playing Stalker anomaly customs. So far this is the best modpack for me. Not over complicated and it is beautiful out of the box. During the day it’s action game but during the night it becomes a horror game many times. For example my last unscripted event where my character died was like this : I’ve got a mission from clear sky where I had to investigate why people goes missing during the night not to far from the base. I go out in the dark with my headlight and shootgun to investigate. As I try to find my way to the checkpoint with my pda lowered in my hand i hear dogs barking and I know they coming after me. i tried to get some distance and aim towards the barking. The dogs appear and I shoot down 2 dogs after a short battle only with minor injuries. I also hit the third dog but it only gets injured and it starts circling around me. I can’t see it but I can hear it. I aim to the direction where the whining coming from ….. then nothing, just silence. I aim and wait. You know how the swamp is. You can’t see anything specially during night. So I aim ready to fire, I am nerves. Then just started to think maybe it ran away or something then at that moment a black chimera jumps on me from behind a bush exactly where I was aiming to. I didn’t hear it coming at all. I got one hit from it as it jumped at me and that’s it… I’ve got lost to the zone
It was so perfect and unexpected. It is hard to find unscripted events like this in other games.

They're very different games from STALKER on the surface, but at least for me, Borderlands 1 & 2 and a lot of The Division franchise had a similar level of immersion. A big part of it may be the non-linear nature of the game's design. Yes, there are specific things that need to be completed in more-or-less a certain order. But the boatload of side-mission content included not only reveals so many of the game world's nooks and crannies, but also breaks up the linear elements which I think amplifies interactivity. This is as opposed to something like the strictly linear Halo, CoD/MoH campaigns, etc. IMHO, a lot of what makes the STALKER world feel 'alive' is that you experience it as you choose while, at the same time, the world itself is alive with all sorts of activity independent of your actions.

Stalker gets a fundamental fact about what makes us embrace a fictional world. You see this in games like Skyrim, No Mans Sky and the like: there's room for the player to bring their imagination. Skyrim is full of story and lore, most of which leaves gaps, questions and mysteries. It's more than just 'I'm the dragonborn let's go kill dragons'. It's the vanishing of the dwarves, the mystery of the Falmer, what's up with Tiber Septim and the Dragon Breaks etc. All that draws you in, and your imagination paints in the missing pieces, and the world procedurally throws all manner of unscripted things at you which create a unique experience.
With Stalker, you're presented with this incredibly atmospheric, bleak, fascinating Zone (which perfectly captures the The Zone it was based off of from the novel Roadside Picnic). The zone is utterly ambivalent to you, but also fascinating. The mood is bleak, nihilistic. The Zone goes about it's existence and the various factions randomly roam and interact with you there. There are no explanations for the almost lovecraftian horrors found there, beyond 'something something accident, something something experiments'. It's horrifying and fascinating and relatable. And it draws you in with mystery, hints, clues, and the answers you can find only generate more questions. It feels alive. Like it exists in spite of, and without your interaction. It makes you feel exactly like a fictional stalker would. There are not any safety rails. Just consequences.

Why do I keep shilling those mods below? (because people should play something different then the same 3 mainstream mods)
If you guys loved the trilogy here are some mods that in my opinion captured the mysterious feeling of the trilogy:
    Made by Jekan:
Return to the Zone(3 story campaigns and a story extraction mode), Goldensphere OGSR(based on Roadside Picnic), OGSR Legacy(pretty much a remake of ShoC with lots of cut content and user made content).
    Team V.I.V.E.N.T.:
Incubator(Middle to short story in Pripyat and various underground locations), Dreamcatcher(sequel to Incubator and a whole lot longer, a journey through almost the whole zone and damn was it a good story). They have more great mods but they still are hard to understand Machine translations.
    zaurus' crew:
Apocalipsis Trilogy OGSR(also 3 campaigns each as long as clear sky without war) , Fallen star(also called "Der gefallene Stern" sequel to A-Trilogy), Last STALKER(sequel to Fallen Star)
Creators/teams I forgot the name of:
True Stalker(if you don't mind cutscene glassjaw), Dollchan infinity, Road to the north(story/free play hybrid, main story starts at Skadovsk), Path in the Mist, Wind of Time(it starts with timetravel from the year 2114 back to 2014 and has some big twists)

It kind of makes me think of Valhalla. When a viking dies in battle, their heaven is an eternity of fighting and feasting, it doesnt abide by the rules of physics in the afterlife, its detached from reality, and you're there forever. The Exclusion Zone is similar, except its a choice to escape your societal restrictions, to enter a frontier of lawlessness among a variety of people, all with the same reasons for being there: the freedom to do as you will. Its like a post-apocalypse in a bottle where you dont know whats waiting around the next corner. An emission. A group of bandits. Mutant. Wild dogs. A field of anomalies. A patrol of your aligned faction members. Intense radiation. All painted on a background of self-hopelessness, knowing your life can end at any moment in any number of ways, all the while trying to figure out what happened here, what does it mean, how does it all work. Theres nothing else like this in other media, theres always the budding young hero that solves problems and discovers the truth, but the slavic perspective rejects the notion, it will all be for nothing, and you wont understand why

What a great comment. I like the Valhalla reference in a weird way I think that is pretty solid. The Slavic perspective rejecting the notion of a young budding hero all for nothing with no explanation really hits the nail on the head to me. Thank you for checking out the video!

I'm already a bit disappointed in Stalker 2.
I've noticed several questionable design decisions in the new gameplay footage. A shining example: In developer's deep dive (swamp area) we see how a red barrel is calmly sitting in the middle of fire anomaly field (like really?). Then the player is attacked by a psy-dog, shoots the barrel and it explodes. Such barrel filled with gasoline in THE ZONE where everyone earns their bread by looting anything valuable? Fuel is valuable. If I'm not mistaken, original games only had big red pressurized propane canisters in industrial areas.
Secondly, all of the old rusty ruins, fire extinguishers, warning labels etc now have Ukrainian text on them in spite of Chernobyl's soviet past. It's not a problem in and of itself, I'm local and I know the language, but that's a trend of rewriting history and violent decommunization in action due to present events. I don't want games to go political. It's the same reason my home town got renamed from a proud hero's name to a bird, half of the streets within got renamed as well. I'm afraid this trend might reap a good chunk of Stalker's universe, depending on what will be deemed "russian" (aka bad) and how far it goes. Will we meet Sidorovich? Chiki Briki jokes? No slav squats or slang? I'm honestly disturbed this will be a "distilled" Stalker: Dignity Edition, not the one I cherish. If that happens - this will really hurt, as if my childhood is being gradually erased and replaced. Although I doubt US audience will notice much difference, so it's only relevant in eastern Europe where Russian is international language and we all share a common memory of "The wild 90's".

  • @Kryptid_K

Soviet fiction just hits different. Just about every one on earth is living in a mixed-economy where distant managerial forces attempt to micromanage your every day life. The sense of powerlessness and the lack of agency created in the modern world is better reflected in soviet fiction than anything else. The American power-fantasy of individualism is dead... Western romanticism is dead. Soviet fiction is becoming so popular because the Strugatsky view of life has become near-universal.

    • @orestmakar8562

@@Kryptid_K The atmosphere of STALKER is the atmosphere of post Soviet fiction that encapsulates the mixed feeings that were specific to this time period. When the Soviet Union fell, There was a mix of uncertainty,, danger, fear but also hope, oportunity and edventure. I was born in 1985 in Ukeaine and i know what happened in that time period and how people felt.
The same feeling of adventure, exitment oportunity and hope mixed with danger, fear was present during the exploration decade, Wild West etc.
Thers a good book by Polish author Ryszard Kapuściński „Travels with Herodotus”. He was born in Poland as the II world war begun studied journalism and dreamed about „going aboude”. Back in the Soviet days it was impossible as very few were allowed to leave the block. As a young journalist he gets an opportunity to go to India a county he knows almost nothing about. He doe not speak Indian nor English. He became a traveler and journalist that went on to creat great books. This book basically explains why the act of exploration is so exiting and why the unknown draws us despitevthe danger.
The man lived a life of Indiana Johns. This book tought me alot about traveling, exploring about creating your own adventure for the sake of experiancing this feeling that most people live their life without experiancing. You do not need money to live an adventure. You beed will and a mindset to have the guts neaded to take the leap. Back in University me and my friends decided to travel from Poland to Mongolia on the cheepest Polish communist era car whoch was Fiat 126p aka „Maluch”. The plan was ro buy 4 cars, pack the back Seata with spare parts find a machanic that would help bring the cars to a respectable condition in exchange for promotion, find sponsors that would borrow video equipment and give some money to guy food and gas and contact some TV news channel telling them aboutvthe endevour. I ended up not going due to having exams. But my friends went on with the adventure. They made it to Mongolia and back. There are still video of their trip on YT.
Most people want to live sterile, lives avoiding anything risky. Their lives become repetative, boring and predictable routins, times we kill with „grinding” for more stuff that is a substitute for happiness as we wate for death. That is a bad way to live a life. STALKER encapsulates the romantic idea of exploration. This idea pushed so many people to venture into the unknown to look what lies beyond the horisont.
The aforementioned book is non fiction book and filosophival guide on how to become a traveler/explorer how to put yourself in situations that will transform into unforgetable memories and experiances you will never forget.
Thers a Canadian voluntere Brandodn Michell that became a voluntere later joined the Hospitaliere batalion and has crazy adventures and stories. Malcol Nence a MSNBC military analyst and corespondent in Ukraine litterally dropped his well payed job and joined the Ukeainian Foreign Legion to help fend of Russians that have surrounded Kyiv when the full scale invasion started because as he said he made friends and couldn’t leave them. Dylan Burns an american who decided to be a journalist with no formal training comming from a very humble background produces one of the best content regarding this war. Thers an entire community of creators and people from all walks of life that do incredible things on many fronts. Many of them are NAFO members all are legends.
