Boomer checking in. I grew up in the 80s, and a lot of y'all don't understand how amazing this video is. Once upon a time we had to rely on heavily edited and biased magazine articles to catch up with our musical heroes. These days they just bool it up in realtime, unfiltered. I like that.
Right here with you brother.
thought boomers were our parents?
the 80s was still the best decade hands down.
@@rtaylor1105 Proud member of the Gen X council here. Boomers are definitely our parents, and the 80s was absolutely the best decade.
Boomers traditionally meant our parents, but now days it just mean a non-young person, regardless of generation. You guys are boomers for not knowing that. 😉
The youngest boomers were 16 in 1980, so yeah that checks out.
This is incredibly wholesome. Gotta love how Vai treats the boys as friends above all else.
@КSl 🅥 begone, bot.
@You must know Here is the full clip : that explains why envy is a gross personality trait to have
czcams.com/video/ixoMFAK4U0E/video.html
It's so dope to see this after that awesome song. Makes me appreciate being a musician even more.
Tim's genuine joy at seeing Steve is super wholesome. It's like his favorite uncle or something
This is the collaboration that no one asked for, but we all needed!
No one asked for?! I’ve been asking for it!!!
Who hasnt been asking for it????????
@You must know Your band must be so much superior.
There was a whole Reddit post I read asking for this
Actually i asked for it
This interview is phenomenal. I had no idea Polyphia was so authentic, open minded, and humble.
They're great! It's refreshing to see both the the artist and the person.
Love how Steve keeps giving them props and keeps saying they're the future of guitar and that's a man whoes seen it all
...and transcribed it!
@@Mister006 This is funnier once you've watched the video
I have misophonia and had to turn off the vid immediately. Thanks for letting me know what he said.
So wholesome. It feels great to see two of my guitar idols having such a friendly relationship, purely focused on progressing the art. No ego at all.
*three
truly the ego death
well of course! i mean, their ego died.
@@shadowfire04 lmaoo
Ego death dude, pure art no ego
4:00 you can see Tim just start glowing when Steve is complimenting him
As a lifelong Zappa fan, I've always seen Steve Vai as the young kid who infused metal into Zappa's repertoire. To see Vai as the mature musician, connecting with a new generation of new musicians in an epic collaboration is like coming full circle. This is mind-blowing.
Man I never got into Zappa. I just paused and started my first listen to Roxy.
I haven't heard a record so suited for getting zooted since Dark Side of The Moon or Moving Pictures.
What a f* record. I need some Dad grass.
I also really appreciate that after titles like "G.O.A.T." and "Playing God" we get "Ego Death" where masters of two different eras in rock music humble one another and compliment and uplift one another. The song stands on it's own but the title, and the video really help add some color.
Let’s not forget the entire the worst album
@@oceanman6973 You mean the most hated? Or am I missing something?
You're not missing something. I had that confusion just today lol
literally the greatest collaboration in music history 🙌
@You must know it’s just a link to a scam page don’t click it
Legends have a way of finding each other 🧲
I’m so glad we get to witness this in our lifetime 🤘
Indeed, We have been blessed.
Polyphia are no legends yet
@@rammsteinfen1 They are innovating in every aspect. They are changing the way people think about it. That's legend status
@@thedurtylemur2282 too gimmicky Steve vai carried the song
Steve Vai - “What’s click bait?” 😂😂 CLASSIC!!!! LOVE YOU STEVE!! Polyphia as well of course ❤
I want a Guthrie Govan and Polyphia collaboration done for a Christmas release.
A pop-rock jazz fusion collaboration oh my goodness
Oh god, i wish that so bad lol
That would probably be amazing bro... I know Tim said on an interview some years ago that Guthrie would be in his fantasy super group or some shit, so I'm sure it's up to Guthrie alone to make it happen
Yessss yeassss yeesssssss!!!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤❤❤❤🤘🤘
That would kinda be the ultimate......
I discovered polyphia from the ego death video on accident while shrooming needless to say I watch ed all the album videos three times in row crying my eyes out cause I had never heard any music that good in my life. Unfortunately it was so good I went over board with them and had to get sober for a little . Polyphia is a true gift from the gods
I was 9 when PAW came out. I was 43 when I first heard Polyphia, you have no idea how exciting it is to see another band really create their own sound. It really attaches to the souls of music lovers. Seeing both of you together in song and conversation is fucking mind blowing.
Such an unexpected mash up. So cool to hear Steve recognize Polyphia for their incredible originality. Props to all the guys for keeping guitar fresh and cool.
I always liked Polyphia and enjoy their music a lot, but I really appreciate that they did something with Steve Vai. He's the godfather of shred and appreciating the people that started the innovative and shredding guitar stuff will only be a blessing to them.
Steve Vai - “What’s click bait?” 😂😂 CLASSIC!!!!
Every guitar kid’s & guitar dad’s dream. Just heartwarming❤
There's so much warmth in this conversation.. like the kids attentively talking and listening to the coolest grandpa in town! And there's so much respect! Steve vai is just godly in terms of how much he respects and encourages new ones!
So much positivity in this conversation!
Steve Vai and Polyphia. What a combo. I am blown away by what Polyphia plays now as I was by Mr. Vai when passion and warfare came out. I wore my cassette tape out. You are all just amazing. As a fellow musician I aspire to be as innovative as any of you. Keep on making that amazing music.
Tim henson saying jelking while on a call with steve vai is something that i never knew i wanted but im glad it happened
What´s cool about "Ego Death" is that the Polyphia guys are doing all the technical, complicated playing and as a contrast, Steve is going for feel and emotion and not super-technical stuff. I have to point out that, even though Steve´s playing is not super-technical here, I could never play what he did in this song. I like this collaboration a lot.
Actually man they touch base in on the interview, Steve does a lot of experimentation on the guitar instrument that really is a lot more complex than it leads on. Check out “joint shifting” it’s interesting stuff, but yes love the contrast between the two
I think Polyphia popped up on my radar with GOAT and I believe they are the greatest group of unique talent on the planet. I've watched everything they had previously released and all their releases after GOAT - just amazing!
I was happy to hear Mr. Vai bring up Zappa, who I saw the same way, and that Tim (at least) was exposed to some of his music. The first two bands I saw as influences on this band were FZ & John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, though surpassing both but being as true of a creative force in progressive music!
I guess I'm giving away my age with the references because I was listening to Zappa when Steve was in that band...I'm 66 and can't stop listening to Polyphia.
Rock on!
That's awesome man
Hell yeah man. Their talent is undeniable.
Next up a collab with Guthrie govan that would be legendary.. love u guys
Yes
I agree, I want a Polyphia and Guthrie Govan collaboration instrumental done ASAP.
@@noadcoco2253 max ostro with polyphia is probably more appropriate for their style than govan
@@avyay4583 Govan adapts really well to different styles.
I would fucking cream over this collab. Guthrie's style would blend so fucking well with them because of his versatility, would be really nice to see him whip out some of his more shred style playing from erotic cakes. I get excited about it just thinking about the possibilities.
The genuine/authentic respect from both Polyphia members and Steve to one another in this vid made this a FANTASTIC insight to the journey of what it takes to be lifelong musical artists. Steve's constant lifting of Polyphia's forward momentum is so Obi Won Kanobi! LOVE Tim's statement 38:43 - 38:50
Hearing Steve say "WE NEED TO REPRODUCE!" was definitely one of the moment in rock music.
Steve Vai's facial expressions and hair sweeps when playing is something that I would've loved to see Tim and Scott do
All you guys are legends 🙌🏽💜 only thing missing is Ego Death acapella (def with Vai’s feature)
@You must know shut up
@You must know 🤡🤡
there u go (altough wizhout Steve but still fun): czcams.com/video/jPFrtyjqKLw/video.html
This makes me so happy to see. They are so blessed to have Vai as a mentor and friend.
Vai and Abasi (and Vai somehow of Abasi too!)
Yes
Wow. Great to see Steve talking casually with members of Polyphia. I'm big fan of Steve since I was ~12 years old. I got to see the wizard himself this year (2022) in Dublin for the first time (almost 30 years later; i'm now 43). I absolutely love the music Polyphia is creating. The fusion of different styles is top notch. I hope to see you guys live, one day.
two humble legends talking to each other, great moment!
Love how genuinely interested Vai is in my dudes and what they do… you’ve come a long way 👊
Aside from the immediate enjoyment of watching, it is also amazing how such a free sharing of information must accelerate development going forward. Having access to videos like this, and the other open and information-dense content modern musicians can share, the generation which comes after Polyphia gets to learn their craft so much faster and more efficiently than we could as players in the 80s. It's scary and exciting to imagine what freaky playing skills and musical compositions are right now in their early formation, guided by content like this, which we could only dream of when we were younger.
Steve has to be one of the nicest people on the planet
this collab is seriously the best music that has been created in a long long time. Thank you
I've been playing guitar for decades.
Steve Vai is one of my heroes. You guys are really bringing a new sound to the guitar world and I appreciate it.
Steve just so fkn wholesome and wise, have not even heard of him before ego death. Happy to have discovered him. Gonna go listen ego death 30 more times when im done with this in 15min.
Go listen to Passion and Warfare and you will appreciate Steve even more!
Blue Powder still one of my favorites on the CD…
make sure u check out some of vais stuff, tender surrender is amazing
Whaaa
I caught this live and it was so special to watch them talk and how wholesome it is, its like an old master teacher talking to his long lost students
I cant imagine how proud you could be as a LEGEND of progressive groove metal; seeing people creating music inspired by what you did. Polyphia KNOWS and respects Steve Vai but they are relaxed because it's important to treat people you respect as people too! Steve Vai might be a behemoth of virtuosity, but he's still a human with a family and privacy.
Tim Henson knows how to speak with a legend!
Generational genre-defining talents just hanging out and having a wholesome chat about music and rock-stardom. 5/5, can’t wait for the record!!!
I was lucky to see this live, good shit bois
A 53:18 minute long smile for me. I don't even know one can smile that long before. The greatest thing is I also realized its positivity would last much longer in me.

This was amazing. Love how Steve is providing his wisdom to them. It was so authentic. Thank you for this. Keep killing it Polyphia!
This friendship that Polyphia and Steve have truly makes me happy, being someone that has been a Vai fan for decades, and loving Polyphia from the moment I discovered them i'm just hungry to see you guys work together again, this is so wholesome.
It’s so great to see two different generations the older and wise and the younger and Innovative have a circle of life creative inspiration fest together.
This is the most beautiful relationship in this world :)
Its sad to hear them say "I know a lot of people are going to have a lot of not nice things to say about this record." I just listened to the record today for the first time and WOW!!!!! I LOVE IT! Steve is also such a great guy with all the advice too.
I need more polyphia and steve. Such a good feeling. The combination is just awesome, they have a good connection. Outside of music, and also creating legendary pieces. I wish poly and steve just join lmao
It’s so nice to see such a great conversation. They are not just incredible musicians, they all are even more incredible people! I am stoked to the Europe tour, see ya in Munich!
Grew up listening to Satriani and Vai, and now Polyphia, Animals as Leaders, and so on. This is just wow !!!
I'm sure you know who Plini is if progressive groove metal is your thing. Lol Steve Vai had a comment about his album: HIS NEW RECORD IS ONE OF THE FINEST, FORWARD THINKING, MELODIC, RHYTHMICALLY AND HARMONICALLY INSTRUMENTAL GUITAR RECORDS I HAVE EVER HEARD"
So if Steve Vai joins Polyphia? They're good in my book. If Robin Williams says you're funny? You're fucking funny!
Flying in a blue dream is one of the best pieces of music since Claire de la Lune by Debussy!!
Wonderful collab. Steve and his wise advice was wholesome. And I'm here to say that Im one of those that really appreciate your music guys. Keep doing your new fresh and unique music bc I'm here to support it!🖤
The fact that Vai didn’t know what clickbait was is actually refreshing. I wish I didn’t know what it was either.
Pure joy. Instructive, inspiring, meaningful, encouraging for any artists. Thank you, a lot.
It’s like a Jedi talking to his Padawans. I loved this! ❤
So excited to see Polyphia in Louisville! Steve Vai is the G.O.A.T. of the guitarists of old, Tim and Scott are the modern G.O.A.T.'s!!!!
This is such a cool interview/conversation. Positive all around. You guys are all great.
Thank you for all that you do and being so accessible!
Steve Vai sent the boys to the Shadow Realm with compliments at 40:15
Hey guys, apparently I’m really late to the party and just discovering Polyphia now. I come from a completely different musical background (classical) and love your stuff - the layering, the polyrhythms, the mixing of lots of different genres and of course the collabs. You guys reminded me a lot of flamenco and jazz guitar as well - (perhaps check out Paco de Lucia). Sending all of you *good vibes* and good energy. And this interview with Steve was great. Steve, love your grounded and peaceful way of thinking. Congrats all!
This collab was amazing. Absolutely incredible song and video. Gave me chills watching it.
4 music kids and their dad: the movie
*THE SONG*
Great interview! 2 different generations of music, connecting with the art of playing music. Seeing the respect and appreciation of what each other has done and is doing is incredibly satisfying!
I don’t know if this interview grew my love for the sage Vai, or just made me fall in love with Polyphia even more. Fuck these guys rock. Can’t wait for the new album. Also, I appreciated the comment about the diversity in their music from Tim. I can get a little “what the fuck is this?” when a band takes a different route and sometimes I gotta remain a little more open to the art.
Soo..
I fkn cried when I first saw & heard the "Ego Death" video here on CZcams. & I've been having it on replay ever since. (This, & "Teeth of the Hydra"). I shared "Ego Death" first with my brother...
Anyway,
I appreciate & love u guys now
So tremendous. Seeing Steve this Tuesday night in Austin. So stoked. Thx guys. 🤘🏻🇺🇸
Really cool being a fly on the wall for this convo between legends. Pretty cool to see! Thanks for sharing.
Bridging the wizardry of generations together. If only the rest of the world could find the space to reconnect.
Love this video. Love this collab. Thanks for sharing the moment with us.
I'm loving this conversation so much. You guys are such an inspiration.
Love the creative direction from you guys, I’m in my 50’s, still play guitar every day, still listen to new stuff every day and you guys are phenomenal, congrats on working with Steve, it was awesome to see and hear him in Ego Death, absolute legends all of you, fkn love it all, keep it coming
I'm so glad you guys posted this conversation. Lot's of insights on your creative processes, so thanks for that.
There are a ton of great musicians out there but, like Vai said, creating a new and fresh sound is rare.
Polyphia is single handedly going to bring Guitar back to the front of the live stage. Thanks for that as well.
I'm 54 and have been a fan of Vai's for many years now, but he did not bring me to you. You had me at G.O.A.T.

Love it, can't wait to watch all the way through
This conversation is loaded with tons of meaning and lessons! What a Great people
Love seeing this. Steve seems like a natural mentor to you guys. You know you've got something good going on when Steve Vai loves your work! Keep it up guys. F the haters
So awesome. Legends of old & new! Like Steve said, keep creating badass music my dudes! The sky is the limit. Much love.
It's cool that I had no fucking idea I needed a conversation like this in my life. Thanks Polyphia! Love you!
Yo, steve I remember hearing ur CD the first time, it was Deadass Bussin. You have the best guitar licks and flutters no cap fr fr. Your music was never sus, it Deadass slaps.
Thanks for sharing this. Loved Vai since I was a kid, I really hope you guys do more stuff together--doesn't even need to music!
I didn't plan on actually listening to this all the way through. But I did. This was so compelling and inspiring. Thank you Polyphia and Steve for sharing this conversation.
Outstanding!!! Ego Death melted me. I've loved Vai for a long time and you guys are off the chain. Great interview and keep creating!!!
rollin a doobie to this
This is awesome. Great track and everyone involved is killing it. Good feels.
Dude that like a dream come true for this collab. Vai is one of my main influences and you guys are too. Keep goin hard af. I love it and couldn't be happier to see this collaboration come to fruition. 🤙🏾
Loved this discussion and "Ego Death" is so good and I'm also glad that Vai Recommended Greggery Peccary by Zappa - that's an Incredible Masterpiece. Also very interesting that Vai says that he transcribed the Roxy album - I certainly hope the Sheet Music from that Masterpiece will be published someday.
yes! this kind of vid is EXACTLY what i was hoping to see from the band and Steve! Just pros talking shop while we can all be a fly on the wall taking it in. Thanks so much Polyphia and Steve!
it's just so inspiring. u guys changed my life, brought me back into rocknroll... I haven't words.
This is Truly a new era of guitar and how it can be fully virtuosic on a new level. Not the first to try and break though, but you guys have really taken the hard work and inspired so many people to learn out of the box skills to a modern sound. I knew when I saw Tim and Scott sitting outside turning heads that there was something special. Well done djents.
Steve Vai with Polyphia was absolutely amazing and awesome, can’t wait to hear the rest of the album
Proud of you guys!! Don't stop putting your hearts and inspiration into your songs because thats what really makes you unique and you❤❤👍
Truly heartwarming. Thank you for sharing!
I'm geeking out on this cool conversation between musicians. I grew up listening to 80's rock and loving all the crazy guitar stuff. Seeing polyphia doing your own thing is just fantastic. There's so many layers in your music it's a joy to listen repeatedly
Tim is talking to a literal GOD like he's his neighbor in 204B . Like they do their laundry together lol. Buddhists meditate for years to speak with god and you just call the dude up on Skype.( I legit don't know what replaced SKYPE, I'm just glad something DID!)
I'm a boomer-milenial. It's a millennial that grew up so poor they couldn't afford YTV and got Global instead. I also listened to Steve Vai AND Dr. Dre. It was a confusing decade for me lol
This is really good. You are sharing what fame and success feels like to those that have no clue and it is a real psycho trip to be successful. For me, the money was my goal and then I found it wasn't what gave me happiness and I destroyed myself financially because I couldn't "let it go". I am so happy for you guys to have Steve as a mentor through this really intense and critical time. Stay free, humble, creative and tough.
It's like Yoda inspiring a whole new group of Jedi lol. I remember seeing Steve 4 or 5 times on the Passion and War tour and it was unbelievable.
There are dozens of things to like about this, but what I'm most appreciating is the willingness of these guys to share this discussion with all of us. I've been a Vai fan since the Passion & Warfare days, and I've become somewhat of a Polyphia evangelist ("you HAVE to listen to this!"). If somehow I ever had an opportunity to "talk shop" with any of these people, I would be excited for the opportunity but it would be easy to also feel protective of it - as if sharing it would somehow lessen the personal nature of the experience. Letting anyone (everyone) else see/hear what was shared between them is really a gift, and it was great to get a glimpse at a friendship that appears to have a promising future.
Thank you all!
Thank you for putting this out. This video is so down to earth and real. It’s so inspiring 🙌
Very cool talk! Steve Vai is a gentlemen and a gift to music. You guys are in perfect position to lead the torch. 12:50 is so true... I've met so many people that do not realise that very simple truth.
Great conversation guys, and really great collaboration on this uniq piece of music. Ego Death is a killer tune!
