Hi, my name is Emi. I'm born in raise in small town just outside Quebec City, this is where my lovely accent comes from. My #vanlife story starts in September 2018. After a long-term relationship that I was trying for more than a year to rebuild, I decided it was time to end this toxic relationship once for all. This is where I decided to move away from this man that I was still in love with. I put all my belongings inside my SUV (GMC Jimmy) and moved six hours from where I was living. I didn’t know where I would sleep, didn’t know where I would work, but I knew I needed to make a drastic move. At that time, I told myself I would only sleep in my car for a month while looking for a place to rent. What I didn’t know is that one month became another month and another month. In the end, I end up sleeping in my car for a full year. Even if people consider this the lowest time of my life, this experience was the best thing I couldn’t have done with my life. I took that year to focus on myself, decide what I wanted, and most importantly, what I didn’t want. That year made me also realize that for so long, I was chasing the wrong dreams. I was chasing what society wanted me to be: to have a big house, a steady job, kids, get married… None of those dreams was making me happy. In September 2019, while I was actively looking for a van, I received a phone call that someone had found my cat (Kelly). After trying for hours with no success to communicate with my ex-boyfriend (who was taking care of her), I decided to drive the six hours to go pick her up. Without going into too much detail, it turns out he wasn’t able to take care of her anymore. So I brought her in a cat kennel for a couple of days until I found a van we both could live in. I put all the savings that I had accumulated while living in my car and bought my van (a 2011 Ford Econoline that I end up adding a hightop) In the beginning, It wasn’t so glamour. My cat and I were sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the van. We both had to adjust. Now, my cat loves this lifestyle as much as I do; she looks at the window while I’m driving, and she loves exploring new places. Since then, my cat Kelly and I have been living full-time in my self convert van.
Just got your "Nomad Cookbook" & it's wonderful. I'd love to see a calendar with 12 of your wildlife photos on it. I know that means handling a physical inventory, but I think they would be very popular. Great to see you out of the shop and back on the road. Have a great road trip.

Thank you for the trip to Gabriola! Haven't been there in more than 50 years. There were brickworks on Pender and at Sidney and Victoria. All took advantage of the high quality clay deposits left by the glaciers 10,000 years ago. Your photograph of the heron is splendid.

Love that eagle there, I have one in my living room. A guy carved out of solid oak and it is heavy about 10 years ago. I bought it carved it out with the chainsaw. It is beautiful love the bald eagles.👍👍😎

Malaspina Galleries has very unique rock erosion. I was there over a decade ago and I thought it was the coolest thing to see. Hope your new stove comes quickly for you. Loved the beaches you showed us.
That's us where the waves made the beautiful spot. We are going on a few road trips here in WV but our few days at the beach for the 1st time in 18 yrs but this time I will be with daughter her 2nd time to the beach. She went with my sisters, brothers and nefews when she was 3. A trip we have been waiting to do. It will be VA Beach and Sandbridge Virginia.

Have you tried WD-40 white silicon spray for your squeaky driver’s side window? It works good & doesn’t dry up.

it would help if you tried all the islands, they are all very unique. We visited Gabriola but also tried Quadra & Cortes! We have also visited Denman & Hornby! And don't forget Malcom & Cormorant Islands! Of course Salt Spring, Pender, Galiano and Saturna. Each island is very different and so are the people.
two weeks ago we did Powell River & Texada Island!!
Obviously, we love our travels, our 'Rock-to-Rock" tour from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland, Labrador and St. Pierre & Miquelon. The same with our "Rock to the Klondike" tour. But the treasures around Vancouver Island are just as spectacular.
Make sure you buy a BC Experience Card from BC Ferries to save a fortune!!

I've always wanted to go to Gabriola Island. It looks so beautiful there! Kelly loves the sand.😽💕
I’ve spent many visits at Gabriola and its the best cycling island of all the Gulf Islands. The sandy beach was where I swam there one Thanksgiving believe it or not and the “Galleries” rock formations are so unique, plus I’ve jumped off there into the ocean on a very hot summer day. There’s a wonderful lodge style resort called The Haven too. Hope you get there one day.

A tip how to charge your laptop in the van. Do not use your inverter, the inverter uses a lot of power, even in idle mode. Instead, buy a cigarrette lighter plug with a USB-C output, 100 watts. The plug will convert 12 volts to 19 or 20 volts that your laptop need when plugged into the USB-C input on your macbook. More efficient. As a vanlifer, I do try to power all my equipment as far as possible from 12 volts to save energy. An inverter is not that efficient, around 70-80%. A fridge and stove goes on gass. Then of course you have that power station to power drills, mixers, cooking bottles and other things. But the power station needs a charge as well. I do stop at different camping spots to get a charge for a few hours. My challenge now is how to charge my e-bike in the van. It cant be charged on 12 volts, it needs a normal 240 volts charger (Norway) by an inverter. It consumes 150 watts while charging, so it will drain the van battery pretty quickly.
Maybe you could get some lemongrass essential oil and a carrier oil, put it in a roll on bottle or spray and put that on for the mosquitos.
Does my heart good to see a "big adventure cat" like yours! I adopted a 7 year old kitty many years ago. Taught him to walk on a leash and he loved adventuring in our neighbourhood - just like your kitty. He would have cherished van life :D

I like going barefoot in my yard when it's hydrated and green. Then it' soft. Once it dries put it becomes prickly. What kind of shoes did you wear to protect your feet on the Brick Beach?
