- Lourdes is the most famous healing shrine in the world but it’s a fascinating pilgrimage destination for anyone, even if you’re not in need of a miracle. People from many nations fill its streets.
Each year the French shrine of Lourdes draws millions of visitors from around the world. But when a young servant girl named Bernadette Soubirous claimed to see a radiant vision of a woman in white here on February 11, 1858, it was a just small market town virtually unknown to the larger world.
Over the next five months the lady would appear 17 more times to Bernadette, visions that the Roman Catholic Church (though initially skeptical) would declare authentic appearances of the Virgin Mary. Miraculous cures have been associated with Lourdes ever since.
Lourdes today is far different from the isolated mountain hamlet of 1858. During the main pilgrimage season that runs from Easter through the end of October, an average of 25,000 pilgrims gather here each day in the shrine located in the center of Lourdes.
Several huge basilicas and churches dominate the grounds, each with many services throughout the day and evening. The torchlight processions for which Lourdes is famous wind between them, a flickering ribbon of light held by pilgrims singing hymns of praise to Mary.
While Lourdes has clearly changed from the time Bernadette saw the first vision, the heart of the grotto remains essentially the same. The large outcropping of stone known as Massabiele is still there, and in the niche where the lady had appeared to Bernadette stands a statue of the Virgin Mary, her hands joined in prayer as her eyes gazed heavenward.
Below, a long line of people slowly wind into the area beneath the stone, where they reverently touch the rock and leave photographs, flowers, and other tokens near the spring that had been uncovered by Bernadette. A rack of candles burns brightly in front of the grotto, and nearby is a line of spigots where people collect water from the spring.
I visited Lourdes on the days surrounding February 11, the anniversary of the first apparition and a feast day of Bernadette. More than 20,000 pilgrims would join me in the celebrations at the shrine. (About 25,000 pilgrims are present daily in Lourdes during the main pilgrimage season that runs from Easter through the end of October.)
Seeking Healing Miracles
The diversity of people was striking: nuns in long habits, elderly couples, young people traveling in groups, elegant Italian women in fur coats, and groups of men holding large banners aloft bearing the names of their cities and churches.
After several more blocks, the commercial district ended and I reached the entrance to the shrine. Just inside St. Joseph’s Gate, a large marble statue depicted the Virgin Mary appearing to a man in a hospital bed. A few more steps and a huge basilica came into view, an imposing structure with a gilded crown set atop its lower level. Two ramps extended like arms from each side, ending in a huge square and esplanade capable of holding many thousands of people.
Located in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains near the Spanish border, Lourdes has a population of just 15,000 (but more hotels than any other French city except Paris).
The main pilgrimage season in Lourdes runs from Easter through the end of October. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes is open 24 hours every day, and admission is free.

I'm planning to go over there with my family in the next couple weeks. Do you have any advice for me? I dont know anyone in France but going to visit Saint Mary is my dream and i want to make it come true.
It is certainly an unforgettable place and worth visiting. As for accommodation, we stayed at the 4-star hotel “Hôtel Rive Droite & Spa”. It did not correspond to the 4 star criteria, it was very “beaten”. A hotel on the other shore “Hotel Mediterranee Lourdes” looked bigger and better looking from the outside. But I can't assure you of anything. Another very good looking hotel is the “Grand Hotel Belfry”, 5 stars. The theme of gastronomy, depending on your tastes you can find a restaurant or cafeteria. You won't have any problem. As a recommendation: an Italian pizzeria “Pizzeria Le Basilic”. Don't miss the nightly candlelight procession. We can only imagine the interest and concern that these events caused among the religious and civil authorities, especially since after the three initial cures occurred, many more cures followed. The number of cures was so abundant that it was being called an “epidemic of cures.” For this reason Monsignor Laurence, Bishop of Tarbes (the Diocese pertaining to Lourdes), established a Medical Review Committee in order to study and determine the veracity of the alleged cures.
The Director of the Medical Review Committee was Professor Vergez, a faculty member of Montpellier who specialized in thermal medicine. He began by analyzing the water from the spring at the Grotto, in order to determine if the water itself had any particular properties and he discovered that it did not.

Hello! We normally move by car, it is the most comfortable. There are multiple possibilities for car rental. Also you can get to San Sebastián by public transport (train, bus, plane) and rent a car from there. If not, continue with the train/bus to Irún -Dax- Lourdes, as an option. Another option could be a TRIP TO LOURDES WITH THE PARISH. It is a plan that requires a travel organization in advance, but with that the problems of transportation and accommodation are removed. There are many parishes in Spain that organize these pilgrimages. I hope my comment has been useful. Best wishes!

9:00 p.m, every day, July-October.
If you come to Lourdes, you have to do the Marian torchlight procession. Ever since the apparitions, crowds have flocked to the Grotto with candles, responding to the Virgin Mary’s invitation to “come here in procession”. During this procession, there is a fervour, an impetus which arises from this ocean of light, from the presence of people from all over the world, who pray in different languages to Mary. You have to experience it for yourself. The statue of Our Lady of Lourdes is carried in procession through the Sanctuary: each person implores her to watch over their family and loved ones.
Come and join this tide of light. You too, can take a candle, sing the Ave Maria, in front of the Rosary Basilica, which is illuminated for the occasion.

Es un hotel que está muy bien ubicado , reformado recientemente y con un personal muy agradable y cercano. Tienen la cafetería, donde podéis desayunar , comer, etc. El desayuno nos costó 8€ por persona.
En el mismo hotel podéis pedir el mapa.
Podéis encontrar toda la información detallada sobre las ceremonias por in internet o bien en la entrada al santuario. Hay diferentes horarios según la temporada alta, o baja (desde noviembre hasta marzo).
En cuanto a la duración del viaje 2 noches - 3 días es más que suficiente. A parte del santuario te recomiendo visitar ⬇️
