    Mosaics 101: How to make Mosaic House Numbers
    by Jennifer and Kitty O'Neil
    The O'Neil Sisters
    Running With Sisters
    How cool are these mosaic house numbers?! We love how they turned out. And they were so fast and easy to make! We'll show you how.
    The trick is to smear the wooden numbers with black silicone, then just embed the tiles and keys and things. No grout needed! The silicone shows between the tiles and looks like the grout. Here's a video we made showing how easy it is to mosaic house numbers this way. Follow along then use the step by step instructions below to make your own mosaic house numbers.
    How To Make Mosaic House Numbers
    Materials To Make One Mosaic House Number
    MDF or wood house numbers, 9.5" tall
    Black spray paint primer
    Mini tiles
    Heart and lock charms
    Keys
    Shank buttons (brass, shanks removed)
    Cube beads, 4mm
    100% Black Silicone
    Putty knife
    Hangers
    Steps To Make One Mosaic House Numbers
    1. First find your wooden or MDF house numbers. We chose numbers that were wide enough to place more than a one tile. That way we got some good real estate to make our mosaic on. Spray paint the numbers black coating the front, the back, and the sides. Let dry.
    2. Squeeze out the black silicone onto the surface of a number and spread it out to make a 1/8-inch layer of black silicone all over the front of the number. We used a putty knife and "frosted" the number with the silicone like we were frosting a cake.
    3. Now it's time to make your mosaic. Press the largest items, for us the keys, into the silicone. Next arrange the buttons and charms. Make sure each tile, key, button, and charm is pressed down into the silicone.
    4. After you have placed the special keys and charms and things, arrange the tiles. We made a border with mini tiles (we used all the same color). We skipped over areas where the keys and things poked into the border.
    5. Use smaller tiles and beads to fill in the spaces between the keys and buttons and the tile border. Fill in the smallest spaces with the cube beads until most of the black silicone is covered with the mosaic and only "grout lines" show.
    We put hangers on the backs of our numbers to hang them up outside. If you have any questions while you’re working on your mosaic house numbers, just leave us a comment and we’ll reply. We're here to help!
    Happy Crafting,
    Jennifer & Kitty

    Thank you for replying. Will have a go at making the numbers. Am new to crafting, but have just been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease at 50 so need to use my brain and hands. We here in the U.K. Only have Levodopa to treat this horrible ailment so just wish that I lived in the US where you know so much more about treatment than we do here. To be honest, in terms of medical treatment, we are like a ' third world country '. Thanks for your help. God Bless you both x

      Dawn, supplies can be got for only the cost of the trip if you live within travelling distance of a beach (in the UK few of us live more than an hour's drive from a beach, especially in Scotland, so we are a bit spoiled in that respect). Terracotta plant pots, old tiles and cheap crockery from a charity shop can also be broken up to make inlays. Even small pebbles/stones from a builders merchant or garden centre could work well.

    That is a beautiful idea well executed. As Amy Grace said below, keep holes in the numbers for fixing. I'd also be inclined to cover the project with epoxy resin for weatherproofing.

    I’ve never done mosaic before but have always wanted to so I’m going to give it a whirl. I love that you use the grout/glue for this project. I have five numbers that are 5 inches tall by 4 inches wide and I’m wondering how many tubes of the grout sealant I should get. Since they are 3/4 of an inch thick I will probably do the sides as well. Approximate‘s are fine to get started. I know you can’t determine exactly how much I need. Thank you so much!

    Would this same process apply for stained glass too? I was hoping to have both media's in my door number plate. So confused about whether to use silicone, glue, grout, epoxy resin or a glue gun. Want it to last as many years as poss outside and be strong. Also would you use wood, metal, slate or corian for the base? Many thanks x

      @TheONeilSisters  Před 2 lety

      Hi Rosanna! Sounds like a fun project! This process using the silicone as a grout is super simple and should last a good while. (Ours have.) If you wanted to do a traditional grouted mosaic, here is a sample tutorial: runningwithsisters.com/diy-mosaic-broken-china-heart-mosaic/

    • @TheONeilSisters

      Great point! If you leave them out in direct weather, the MDF might not do well without first treating it. You can paint it with a primer. Our numbers are under an eave out of direct rain and sunlight. And they have done very well outside.

Do you know where I can buy gray sealant in tubes as opposed to cartridges? I've scoured the internet, but have probably missed something. Hi. I'm hoping you can help. I am loving your mosaic tutorials. I am planing one for my front garden and will be making my mother in law a house number one for Xmas. My question is that I am hoping to do the house numbers on an MDF board as apposed to getting the MDF numbers and I wonder if it's okay to use grout on MDF to get the full mosaic look or can it only be used for example on the stone mosaics you did?

    • @TheONeilSisters
      @TheONeilSisters  Před 6 lety

      We would only worry about the weatherproofness (is that a word?) of MDF. The grout is wet as it goes on. So you want a waterproof surface. If you prepped the MDF with sealer it might be fine. Plus keep the mosaic out of direct rain. Hope that helps. J&K

    • @amandabradbury8047

      The O'Neil Sisters hi thanks for your speedy response... So, what I plan to do is paint the numbers to protect them then am I right in thinking I don't need the adhesive as all I need to do is put the grout on, then the tiles then the grout and wipe off ? Why would they need to be out of the rain? I think the numbers will be on an outside wall so if I can make them waterproof I would prefer it.x

    • @TheONeilSisters
      @TheONeilSisters  Před 6 lety

      The silicone stays tacky and workable for about 10-15 minutes. If you don't want to feel rushed, you can just do a section at a time.

      Hi Susan, Ours are under an eave near the front door so they don't get direct sun or rain. The silicone (which we used for the grout) is made for showers and baths, so it should be okay getting wet. If you use a wooden number, be sure to seal it before you do the mosaic, so the weather won't harm it. Or try using a metal number as the base. Hope that helps! Jennifer & Kitty

    But how do you hang the house number once the mosaic is finished? Would you use an adhesive? hardware?--The pretty stuff is all very well and cutsie but this is not a very comprehensive or practical presentation. Surely the business of hanging the house number is crucial and should be planned out first. Sticking on the pretty bits is easy.

    • @TheONeilSisters
      @TheONeilSisters  Před 6 lety +2

      Hi Anne!
      Great question! How you hang the house numbers will depend on what you want to hang them on. If you want to attach them to brick, you can get very nifty brick hangers at the hardware store. Attach D-rings to the backs of the numbers and hang on the brick hangers. www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=10951784
      For wood, you can attach saw tooth hangers to the backs of the numbers and hang them on nails. You could also use D-rings on the back and attach them to the wall with picture hanging nail hooks.

      We got these on Amazon but craft stores should have some version of them. J&K

    Did you seal the house numbers? If so, what sealant did you use? X

      We sealed the numbers with spray paint and sealer before we started the mosaic. You could seal it after as well. Try a clear spray sealant. J&K

    All you need to mosaic is elmers glue, glass and whatever your putting it on. I've made MANY with Elmers Glue and grout. Its way easier than this.

    Mosaics can be a refined art. What you do looks like crafts, which is fine but it looks unfinished without grout.

      Yes! We love doing garden crafts like mosaics. We have lots of mosaics with grout if you prefer those. Check out our blog at RunningWithSisters.com We too love beautiful mosaics that are real art! Thanks for watching. J&K
