Jamming on a 15 year old, half broken Yamaha Motif XS!

  • My trusty Kawai MP9000 has started to behave erratically, I'm having to switch it off and on too many times these days, I think it's finally time for it to begin a well-earned retirement. So while I consider a replacement I decided to buy myself a temporary stand-in, a 15 year old, half-broken Yamaha Motif XS. Well I didn't buy it knowingly half broken but that's another story....
    So this is my first ever Yamaha workstation, I've owned Roland's and Korg's in the past, and I must say that finally after getting some sound out of it I'm loving the "real world" instrument factory samples on the XS; things like acoustic and electric pianos, acoustic guitars, saxes and horns. Must admit I'm not loving the synth presets at all, I think I need to try to program some of my own.
    But in the meantime, this video is a jam that basically just fell out the very first time I played this Motif XS, the sampled presets just filled me with inspiration and this song was basically the result. Let me know what you think of the sounds, and what your favourite workstation is. Do you own a more recent Motif model, and if so would you say it is definitely worth the upgrade? Looking forward to reading your comments! :)

    Your comments on equipment are pretty good, but your music is awesome !! Please let us know what you have in your heart, not just your brain!!!

    Speaking as a half broken old man, that 15 year old baby sings like a dream and deserves to made whole again.😁🎶🎹🎶🎶

    Long time Yamaha player continuing to find their engineering translates best into expressive sounds and instrument feel, humanity.

    One of your best compositions, Tim; despite your programming and acoustic guitar performance being exquisite at times, I'd love to hear this played by musicians on 'real' acoustic instruments.

    Definitely play around with the synth samples and try programming some of your own. I have an MX49 which uses the same sound engine, and you can get some surprisingly interesting sounds out of it.

    I will beat the dead horse once again and say that the Motif is the best workstation in terms of sounds. They're so cozy and I love the ASF button for the guitars. It's actually kind of tricky to press it in time to make your guitars sound legit but you've got the hang of it.

    The Easy Sounds Phat Analog I, II, III and Magical Pads libraries are very good. I still have the Motif XS 6 that I bought new in 2006. I happen to like the keys on it as they are good quality.

    Nice piece Tim. I still have an original Motif7, and it is also have broken, but I still use it here and there, and still love it. I had an Motif8 for many years as well, but I never used any later models of the motif, though I did use a Yamaha Montage for about a year on tour and I loved that one. I've also owned many other Yamaha products, mostly sound modules (At one point I think I had them all). I've been fairly loyal to Yamaha keyboards since the CP70/DX7 days. I've always liked their weighted action boards. Forgivable and true to life, as a good piano action is. Stay well!

    Nice drum programming!! My even older Motif7 might sound like that too and I even have an Ex5R......

    Nice jam with the Motif XS…as always your compositions and reviews are well done:)! Almost everything I create musically consists of interjecting my 12year old Motif XF in some fashion or manner.

    Sounds great, as always! What's busted about it out of curiosity?
    I'm still rocking my Motif 8... Mainly as a controller keyboard these days, as Yamaha has always had the best feeling weighted keys for me. But I'm still using the internal sounds. I just wish I could revive my old SY77...

    Very cool music, congrats! I think all the instruments sound great. This actually gives me a bit of headache, as I am planning to buy the fantom 6 or 06, and the real instruments do sound better also on mod-x. Synth though is better on rolands. Also the workflow feels better on them. I am planning to stay away from daw-s. What do you think!

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge  Před rokem +2

      Thanks! It's a tough one. People I speak to with experience of Yamaha are very positive about the real world instrument sounds compared to the competition. But Roland has specialised in recreating great synth sounds. I think ideally we need to buy both! 😂
