  • The short movie here: the Churning of the Ocean of Milk, is the introduction to a Keynote/ slideshow introduction on Ayurveda. (The link to view the whole presentation is below).
I have tried to present the story of Ayurveda, so that, like its name (Ayu-Life and Veda-Knowledge) the story would give anyone an understanding of the fundamental principles of this ancient Medical system. I have also tried to make it relevant, interesting and immediately usable and give people real 'tools'-, such as: 1) How to preserve their health if they have it and 2) A clear understanding of how to overcome disease.

Such a beautiful and wonderful story. This story was mentioned in readings for a class I'm taking, and I wanted to make sure I understood what it was about! One thing I think I keep on missing, why is it called the ocean of milk? I'm sorry if I just keep missing where it's explained, I just want to make sure I understand! Thank you to anyone that helps!

Think of the Milky Way! When you look at the night sky in a cloudless night in a very dark area of the world it looks like milk has been spilled out in rivulets if stars

Thank you. In addition to being an Ayurvedic practitioner, I am a Indian Philosophy and religion scholar and have read many versions and commentaries regarding this story. I recently wrpte a book in which I speak of Srila Prabhupada and his role in bringing the Sanatana Dharma to the west: How Thoreau's Walden Pond Mixed with the Ganges and Yoga First Came to America with Swami Vivekananda. It is available at the Apple ibookstore and next year on Amazon.

This event was not done on our earth it was done in the ocean of the multi-verse, shiva, vishnu all look like humans in the pictures that was so it could be relate to our earth and us as humanity, in fact the avatar vishnu took, as a turtle was a creature that looked a lot like a turtle but is unknown to humans also the snake u see is not a snake but a dragon with infinte heads also shiva and vishnu look like humans they are not shiva is energy (dark mata) and i should say is a demi god or angel and vishnu well that is uknown and is the one god with infinte forms and the devas u refer to are not god they are also demi gods also known as angels but nowhere near the level of shiva, when shiva consumed the poison vishnu(god) was please that he saved not only the demons but also the devas which is why he was gifted with infinite power thats why he is blue, the blue in pictures symbolic to inifinty, but just because shiva has infinite power shiva is no where near the level of vishnu/god which is difficult for people to understand but vishnu is even above infinite power, as for the demons they are opposite forces to the demi gods/angels/devas and have same level of power, LIKE a magnet demons are negative and devas are positive thats there nature and they dont have a choice also humans have the choice of both paths and that is the origin yin(good) and yang(evil) disbite what you have been told before what I say is true and if a person can be truly pure yin when you leave the body you can achieve the goal heavenly planets, if you still have a little yang left in you then u will be human again however if you have mostly yang then you will achieve the hellish planets and if you wish to leave then you must take birth as every creature in the universe before becoming human or equvilent depending on the universe where you get another chance. some where this truth has been lost in history and made santana dharma(hinduism) less potent. and there is this misconception of many gods there is only one thats vishnu it has many names, many forms, even can be formless we as humans really cannot comprehend (god) even thou we try to. IF anyone needs clearity on anything please let me know peace to all and takecare remember to be good :) ps sorry for my english :P

Vishnu Singh I can attest Sir. I came upon what I believe was a star gate of Lord Shiva a few days ago within another dimension. I think I may have traveled through it last night, because I ended up taking a swim in the ocean of milk during a brief but intense storm where the wind swept me in. By the way, Sri Lakshmi Devi is my Divine Mother, which is why I have this experience and many more...But what I seen when I was there...Few will be able to Believe. I thought it was about the Milky Way and the Ophiuchus constellation. One of Ophiuchus' feet is standing on Scorpio and the other is near the galactic center and behind the center in the zone of avoidance is several galaxy clusters our own galaxy is moving towards.

@Shovelware I almost never respond to someone who speaks with such a tone and has such little learning, a dangerous combination. I am sorry you have never heard of mythology or the language of mythology and how cultures all over the world have used the language of mythology to express truths about life and how things came to be. Since you seem to be limited in your imagination and learning and prejudiced against religions, I suggest you read Carl Jung on myth or Joseph Campbell's- Hero with a Thousand Faces.
Myth is the language not of history but of eternal truths, but expressed in a 'mythological language' which we see 'clearly' in the Churning of the Ocean of Milk. Such mythological stories are re-told in every generation and culture all over the world. Do I think it actually, literally, happened, No, I do not think this actually happened, but do I think it is true, Yes, I think it expresses Truth, but unfortunately in a language that you have no familiarity with or recognition of.
Finally, your denigration of the Hare Krishna movement and Muslims is sad and terribly ignorant. Are there bad and ignorant people amongst them, of course; just like there are bad people in every organization or religion in the world. Because one dog bit you does that mean that all dogs are bad? Do the majority of the religions of the world take what their holy books say literally? Yes, they do. But as you mention, it is time to stop 'sucking our thumbs' of ignorance and learn the language of mythology as well as many other things, religions, people, cultures, ideas, history, philosophy, etc. In the meantime, I suggest you follow the advice of Mark Twain who said, "It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid rather than open it and remove all doubts." I wish you the very best.
