- Camera's of the 1960's were big, bulky, heavy and expensive. In the early 1970's Olympus first introduced the compact and lightweight OM-1. In 1975 Olympus followed up the OM-1 with the auto exposure OM-2. All thru the decade these forward thinking designed set the standard for what photographers wanted to own and use. Come with us on our journey back to photographic times gone by with this history of these 2 great Olympus cameras that strongly influenced all the bigger camera manufacturers.

OM Lover/collector/connoisseur here.. I've been using/collecting OM gear since i was 9 years old.. my dad got an OM-1 MD in 1975.. in 1978 he upgraded to an OM-2 and handed his OM-1 MD down to me.. started teaching me to shoot.. i was 9.. i was hooked.. i now have well over 100 bodies.. somewhere around 250 Zuiko lenses.. and almost every OM system accessory.. multiple of most models.. I have NIB examples of all versions/colors of the bodies and most lenses.. some junk too for parts etc.. lots of OM-10 donors for Pentaprisms.. but most are in working condition... i've let a few of my duplicates go to new homes.. i just wish I had a place to display and share these beautiful cameras.. most people don't care about them.. for now, they live packed away in a store room of one of my offices.. less a couple i keep at home that i occasionally shoot with.. I mostly shoot Sony mirrorless now.. occasionally with a E to OM adapter to fit a nice zuiko up front..
in 1983 olympus/zuiko introduced the AF Zuiko AUTO-Zoom 35-70mm f/4.0.. a stand alone OM mount auto-focus lens.. i own 2 of them.. coupled with the right body and motor winder.. you had a fully "auto" SLR.. prior to the MAXXUM or Canons T-50 ... but Pentax actually beat them all.. they had an auto-focus offering in 1981.. the Pentax ME-F with the K-mount Pentax AF 35-70 f/2.8 Auto-Zoom.. so they were all dabbling in autofocus early in the 80s.. i can attest from experience.. they were slow and not that accurate.. but, pretty cool at the time..
Sexiest cameras ever made the OM1 and OM2 😎. I used to spend hours drooling over the Olympus brochures, but never could afford one at the time 😑. When I could afford to buy a new camera I went and bought a Pentax ME super which was rather good and served me well for many many years until it eventually developed serious wind on and exposure problems 😑. Then I had a casual look at a used Nikon F3 in a camera shop, Id always thought Nikons were so ugly so looked at this one to see why people liked them so much 🤔. This one was the High Eyepoint viewfinder model and for the first time ever as a spectacles wearer I could see the whole viewfinder and the aperture and shutter speed redouts without having to swivel my eyes about and mash my glasses against the camera 😯 😊. That camera went home with me and I still have it now and is still in use today 😎. However the Olympus cameras were still lurking inside my brain for decades and when digital was in full swing and film cameras were practically being given away I finally got one 😊 an OM2 Sp which was lovely and so tiny. That ine developed a problem with the mirror not fully opening when shooting which let in a streak of light from I presume the viewfinder so every shot had streak across top part of every image 😖. I then found another one a few years later which still works but occasionally doest wind on fully each time and requires an extra bit of a tug on the wind on lever so still works if wound on very gently 😊. And now I have a proper Olympus as in the brochures I used to devour, a friend bought me a silver OM 2n with 50mm 1.4 lens and 24mm lens wich are absolutely lovely and work a treat 😎 so I got there in the end and my curiosity is now fully satisfied and Im a very happy Olympus owner only about 40 or so years later 😁.
Keep up the good content 😊👍.
Thanks for watching and for the interesting story. I believe there are still a huge group of us older Olympus fans who are still interested in fulfilling a lingering desire we all helded 45 years ago. I love my OM1's and OM2's but I still seek to someday acquire an OM4 ti. That would be the Holy Grail camera to me.
