Why Is There Still Poverty in the UK?

  • Why Is There Still Poverty in the UK? The United Kingdom is seen as one of the most affluent nations. But the question is, are there people living in poverty in the UK? The country has a lot of resources to keep everyone living there above the poverty level. It’s among those providing economic and military aids to the international communities. This gives the impression that all is well with the country economically. Nevertheless, we do hear reports of teenage poverty in the UK once in a while when there’s no economic indicator that gives any hint of poverty in the UK.
Then, why is there still poverty in the UK? Everything seems to be looking bright there. The employment rate among the more 66 than million Britons is about 77%. The average minimum wage per hour is high. There’s no serious shortage of jobs. Meanwhile, those holding down a job have a high level of productivity. Therefore, the talks of poverty in the UK shouldn’t occur at all. What do the facts show? Is there really poverty in the UK? What caused it?
Is There Poverty in the UK?
Many people are considered to be living in poverty in the UK, according to some internationally accepted measures of poverty. For instance, data based on incomes by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) shows that 13.44 million people are living in poverty in the UK after housing costs have been taken into consideration. These people considered to be living in relative poverty are about 21% of the population.
Corroborating that, a report by Institute for Fiscal Studies in 2015 showed that 21.6% of Britons were living in relative poverty. According to that report, the poverty level in the first few years of the 21st century remained as it was two decades earlier. Another report shows that the poverty rate in the UK is about the same level as the average level of poverty in the European Union nation which is 17%. While this is below the figures released by the DWP figures mentioned earlier, the differences are due to the calculation methods. Nevertheless, both data point essentially to the same thing-there’s poverty in the UK.
In 2014, the Poverty and Social Exclusion Project at Bristol University came out with a report that shows that the proportion of households that lack three items or activities considered necessary for life in the United Kingdom keeps increasing. While it was 14% in 1983, 33% in 2012, it hasn’t decreased till now.
A more recent analysis of government data that analyzed incomes among UK families having at least one child under five found that one-third of these children live in acute poverty. That’s about 1.3 million children under the age of five living in poverty in the UK! You would see the parents of such ones begging for a coat for their children because they can't afford to feed or splash out for another winter coat.
After that report, another report was released about the northeast of England. The region reportedly has the second-highest rate of under-five poverty in the UK. Special reference was made to the low-income families struggling to feed, even before the pandemic made things worse.
While families with young children are more vulnerable to wants and are far more likely to be wallowing in lasting poverty, the resultant effect has been a consistent increase in teenage poverty in the UK.
From the foregoing, there’s no longer any question about whether there is poverty in the UK. We have seen how gripping it is. We can go on and on to explain the effects of this poverty. The more important question, however, is why is there still poverty in the UK despite all efforts geared toward poverty eradication and all the volume of aids the UK government is rendering to other countries.
To answer that, let’s find out what caused poverty in the UK.

Some are asking why we are in this horrific cost of living crisis with soaring child poverty in 2022. Below is a brief explanation that by no means covers everything but it begins to unravel things for people who haven't previously been interested in politics. Other people with knowledge should feel free to add their understandings in reply and help to build the picture. 💕
During Tony Blair's Government they set up targets for eradicating child poverty. They made it law for the Government to be accountable for meeting these targets.Child poverty was at an all time low and on target for eradicating child poverty by 2030. Shortly after the Conservative Lib Dem coalition got into power, they scrapped the targets and therefore the law that said Government should be held accountable became void. The Blair Government was not perfect but on matters of poverty it was on the fair money!
In living memory, Child poverty was always measured by income and material deprivation, essentially. However, in 2016 the Tories scrapped these measurements and devolved governments decided if they wanted to do the same. They didn't, by contrast, Scotland kept those original measurements. All experts say the original measurements were the best and fairest ways to measure absolute and relative poverty. Instead, the Conservatives have replaced those measurements with a highly subjective list headed with if the child lives in a 'workless' household. However, research shows that the majority of people living in poverty (around 68%) are IN WORK...working the gig economy and struggling with ridiculous universal credit. YET the Tories still hold that work is the best way out of poverty...They also conveniently ignore the needs and rights of those who cannot work due to disability or other disabling issues.
Also remember Thatcher's legacy of selling off council houses which were never replaced. That and her allegiance with Rupert Murdoch means the political system and the media is rigged towards the right. Thatcher began the destruction of the unions and the right to protest and Truss aims to finish it (remember - Truss is the figurehead - the big corporations and oligarchs are in charge). Is it any wonder we have declining mental health and that ADHD and learning difficulties are more commonly diagnosed now in children and young adults? Or that domestic violence and drug abuse is on the up? We are all slowly being eradicated. (This is part of the plan on a global scale - The Great Reset - look it up on CZcams or Google Scholar).
Until the ordinary people realise this is a class war and that they have strength in their numbers, nothing will change.
The Tories are about to scrap the Human Rights act in the U.K, they are demonising trades unions through the media and they are undermining the right to protest. Never vote Tory and educate yourselves as much as you can. Push for change - find an organisation or charity that work for the eradication of poverty and join them OR start your own protest within your community. Much love 💕

I've become sick of the UK, the government has no regard for their people. They're stuck in the past with no way forward. When I talk to my foreign friends they poke fun at how rundown the council estates are. There's so much to love about this country but it's all being overshadowed by the disgusting neglect from councils and politicians. Our prime minister is backstabbing criminal who cannot be trusted. I'm planning on leaving to Canada soon so I can actually have a decent life.

I agree with you there. I am autistic and lucky to be in any sort of work despite having a college degree. 78% of autistic people are unemployed despite many wanting and able to work, but have hard time trying to access jobs and find one that is enough to help them live more independently, many who are in work are stuck in part-time and minimum wage jobs with poor security. Some employers are still discriminatory towards disabled people and only see the disability and not the potential. Sad really.

Mis-management of our countries public funds, profiteering by large companies holding monopolies over their goods and services, uncontrolled immigration, housing priority for migrants over indigenous British, overwhelmed NHS caused by immigration and mismanagement. poor wages and working conditions and over taxation. In my opinion all of these things combined are some of the causes of the poverty in the UK.

A Story of Saints and Divine Blessings
    Sand castles
Just as Harun was rich and opulent and Caliph of vast domains, Behlul was a saint, scornful of the riches of the world and focused on the eternal, timeless riches that accrue to men and women of goodness. Harun spent his time in the palace, surrounded by courtiers and sycophants. Behlul spent his time in the desert in seclusion. Oftentimes, he was observed building castles in the desert sand, only to demolish them after he had built them.
One day, Harun was riding in the desert with his comrades when he saw his brother building castles in the sand. The emperor descended from his royal stallion and greeted his brother: “How are you, my good brother?”, asked the emperor. “Shukr Allah, Alhamdulillah (thanks be to God, praise be to God), I am well”, replied Behlul.
The Caliph observed that Behlul had built a sand castle. Reaching out to engage his brother, Harun asked: “I would like to buy that sand castle. How much does it cost?” Behlul usually charged only one dinar (a gold coin) from merchants who were passing by. He would take the money and distribute it to the poor the following morning. But Harun was a mighty Caliph. He had untold riches. Behlul asked for a price worthy of a king.
“One hundred dinars (gold coins)”, came the immediate reply. “And I will distribute the dinars to the poor tomorrow morning at the bazaar.” “One hundred dinars for a sand castle?” rejoined the Caliph. “That is too much for a mere sand castle”. “It is one hundred dinars. It is up to you either to buy it or not to buy it.” The Caliph was not interested. He said salaam to his brother, mounted his horse with its saddle of gold and rubies and departed.
That night, as Harun slept in his royal chambers, he had a dream. He dreamed that he was taken up to heaven and was shown places of unspeakable grandeur and beauty. When Harun asked the accompanying angel to whom these palaces belonged, he was told these were the palaces built by his brother Behlul and purchased from him by passing merchants.
Harun woke up immediately from the dream. He could sleep no longer and spent the night sauntering back and forth in his luscious gardens waiting for dawn. Even before the sun rose from the east, Harun mounted his horse and went out into the desert searching for his brother. At last he located him in a desolate spot, playing with sand as usual. Offering greeting of peace, the Caliph descended from his horse and in a very solicitous voice he said:
“Brother, I will buy that castle you offered me yesterday for one hundred dinars: “The price has gone up. It is one million dinars today. And it must be paid in cash.”
Harun was aghast. “One million dinars! Only yesterday, you said it was one hundred dinars.”
“Yes, the angels took that castle to heaven. The demand is up and this is a new castle. I was told by the angels to distribute all of your gold among the poor of the land.”
Harun felt remorse in his heart. He had missed a golden opportunity to buy for himself a castle in heaven. And now the asking price of one million dinars was so high. He left empty handed, walking slowly in the desert, holding the reins of his horse.
The Shaikh who was narrating the story turned to his students and said: “O people! O my children! When Allah gives you an opportunity to do good, do not postpone it. The opportunity may never come back to you. A good deed is like Divine mercy. When you perform good deeds, you buy yourself a place close to Divine presence. You buy yourself a castle in heaven. Hal Jaza ul Ehsan il al Ehsan (What is the recompense of a good deed except the good deed itself?)”

Very large wealth to income gap in the UK. Much more so than other countries in Europe with a similar size economy.
