Invading another country is a risky business msot of times.
Defenders have home field advantage, are fighting literally defending own homes and know the countryside and are accustomed to weather.
Only few empires managed to make serial conquest a repeatable procedure.

Had they (the Japanese) not made the grave mistake of attacking the Americans, there is a very good chance that the Germans, and the Italians would have won the war against the British, the Soviets, and the Canadians (in Europe, in the Atlantic, and in Africa), and the Japanese would have won the war against the Chinese, the Australians, and the Mongolians (in Asia, and in the Pacific).

Their first mistake was not realizing the depth of the Mongol-USSR alliance. Even if the Japanese initially succeeded, It would have been short lived, the southern regions of Mongolia is fairly level plains and desert. The northern region is mountains where armor is useless. The fight itself was for resources - which the Russians needed as well - while the reason it went no further was the war on its way in Europe: USSR didn't want to fight on two fronts, Japan also didn't need a fight at their rear once they were forging down into East Asia.

The kamikaze "saving" Japan is a myth. Japanese sources don't even mention a typhoon during the first invasion. In the second invasion, the Japanese and Mongol forces fought pitched battles for weeks before the typhoon struck.
