The bright lights of the WWE isn't all. I think she knew they were limiting what she wanted to do. So I applaud her. Everyone should know their value. I think she is a talent that would be stuck in the 2nd tier behind Becky, Bianca, Charlotte etc.
Makes sense to me. After all possible exposure from her name is why she was signed in the first place. If you are gonna pay her a lot to grow your brand might as well go all in for it. Same thing WCW did when they signed Higan. He won the belt in his debut match with flair. Whether you agree with a decision like it or not it makes sense to go all in if you see that person at a certain level.

Mercedes contract is only a year at New Japan, so it would be interesting to see who beats her for it in the end. Plus in the meantime during this years she can face many other stars like Mickie James. Impact has that Metaverse joint show with New Japan, so there should be a champion vs champion match there. Not to mention the AEW show pppv next weekend and she could make an appearance there too.
