  • The ancient city from the Carian and Roman periods, located in the Yatağan district of Muğla, is famous as a city where gladiators trained and held shows. Stratonikeia, which has carried its echo to the present day with the love story identified with the city, has also attracted attention recently with the unearthing of its ancient theater.
6-7 km from Yatağan district of Muğla. The Ancient City of Stratonikeia, located within the borders of Eskihisar Village on the Yatağan-Milas highway, in the west, dates back to B.C. It is known that it was founded in the 3rd century. These lands, first ruled by the Carians, one of the indigenous peoples of Anatolia, hosted the Hellenic and Roman civilizations respectively, and then passed through the Principalities period and the Ottoman sovereignty and reached the Republic period.
It is quite impressive to see this rare historical texture in the ancient city, where human life has continued uninterrupted for almost 2500 years. Stratonikeia, the world's largest marble ancient city, offers the opportunity to experience ancient times and more recent historical periods together with its buildings. Among the city ruins and structures, Erikli, Jesus and Michael Churches from the Byzantine period, 14-15. There are the Seljuk Bath built in the 19th century during the Principalities period, the Şaban Ağa Mosque from the late Ottoman period, the Ottoman Fountain, the Ağa Houses, the shops on the streets surrounding the square, the fountain and houses built in the 1950s. While exploring this ancient city, you may pass a street from the Hellenistic period and come across the Ottoman Aga House.
Rumor has it that Nicator I, the king of the Seleucid country, chose a young woman named Stratonike, who was famous in the region for her beauty, as his wife. The unexpected result of this marriage was that the king's young and handsome son Antiochus and his stepmother Stratonike fell in love when they saw each other. The king, who could not find a cure for this illness of Antiochus, whose cause was unknown, invited one of the famous physicians of the period to the palace. No matter how hard the famous physician tries, he cannot get any results, until one day, while he is in Antiochus' room, he witnesses Stratonice entering. The physician who saw Antiochus's heart beating faster and his face turning red when he saw the woman he was in love with did not delay in making the diagnosis; The king's young son fell into bed out of love. When the doctor explains this situation, the king decides not to hinder this love, abdicates his throne and leaves the country to his son. The new king of the country, Antiochus, who married Stratonike, named the new city he founded as the political administration center after his wife. According to this story told by Stephanos of Byzantium, the city was founded in BC. It is dated between the years 281-261. This founding story of the city has also been the subject of various paintings in post-Renaissance European painting. In the scene described in some paintings made in the 16th and 17th centuries, the king's son is depicted on his sick bed in a room, accompanied by the physician and Stratonike.
Another fame of the Ancient City of Stratonikeia comes from being the "City of Gladiators". Grave stelae found in the early 2000s as a result of excavations in the ancient city revealed that Stratonikeia hosted the largest arena in Anatolia. It was understood that the dimensions of the Gymnasium, unearthed during these excavations, were 105 meters wide and 180 meters long. The gladiator cemetery around it indicates that there was once a gladiator school in Stratonikeia and that many famous gladiators came from the region. The most famous of the 10 gladiators identified so far is undoubtedly Achilles, the famous hero of Troy. When we look at the ruins of the cold washing room Frigidarium, the oiling room Elabothesium, the Young Men's Room Ephebeion where courses such as history and philosophy were taught, the Bag Room Kory-ceum and the Powder Room Konisterium, which are the ruins in the area surrounding the Gymnasium, it is a little easier to understand how much importance was attached to the training of the gladiators here. becomes possible. B.C. 2nd century to A.D. It is thought that the ongoing archaeological excavations on the funerary stelae, thought to have been built between the 1st century BC, will reveal many more warriors.
The residential area in the city, which spread over a larger area in ancient times, began to shrink starting from the Roman period, as can be seen from the ruins in the city. The city, where Greek, Latin and Ottoman inscriptions can all be seen on the same structure among its stone-paved roads, contains structures such as an acropolis, a parliament area, large and small agoras, a large amphitheatre, a castle and city walls.
