Which means I am only covered if my medical bills for a month exceed one dollar over my benefit. So I have have fourteen hundred dollars in medical bills (after Medicare pays) per month, not counting prescriptions, to have Medicaid cover me.
The system rewards laziness and deadbeats, instead of hardworking people who for some reason cannot make more money, or have to juggle two jobs to make ends meet. It's the same here in Portugal and Europe as a whole, although when we elect right winged parties the situation tends to soften a bit. I'm really sorry for your mom's situation, she sounds like a great woman and I wish you all the best.

I had to make money under the table with art commissions until I finished grad school and got paid during my residency. The welfare system is absolutely fucked.
