- If you need practice using a skew chisel, turning skittles from odd squared lengths of what might otherwise be firewood is a great way to go. If you're not up to turning a ball to bowl at the skittles, short cylinders to throw are a good alternative. Or oval balls.
Another great video from my favorite instructor!
I thoroughly enjoyed that. Thank you for sharing 🌞
I think this project brought out a little kid in all of us including our favorite master turner. I like the technique you used on the head changing from short-corner to long-point. The consistent hand position continues that cut around.
In 2000, I traveled to the UK to visit a friend who lived in London. He and his lady friend took me to many nice sights in that part of the country. While there, I stayed in a small community named Litchborough where the nice lady friend own a home. We visited a small pub there and had some wonderful beer. As we drank our beer, I was intoduced to playing skittles. It was very fun game to play; particularly when one has had a few beers. I have a fond memory playing skittles and I may have to make some of these wood turnings and play the game again at home. Thanks for sharing, Richard!!
What a lovely little project, and something the youngsters will learn from, without knowing it. Thanks Richard, great lesson as always.
What a great project to do for the grandkids. Thank you for the great lesson in using a skew too.
Quite right Richard, they're never too young to learn about momentum and inertia. Thanks for posting.
Very nice demonstration of proper skew use. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
If you want to learn how to turn wood then, you could not find anyone better to learn from than , Richard Raffan. Note the skew chisel has a curved edge which, I believe , was pioneered by him.
Great set of skittles Richard.
Awesome video Richard. Thats for the technique tips. Keep up the amazing work. 👽
I had always enjoyed using a skew, but only for certain cuts. Then your work made me confident to figure it out and I'm happy I now feel skilled with my skews.
I've also learned to appreciate a square scraper from your techniques on side grain. Then I used it, with a sharp edge, slightly below center, for a small cut on side grain spindle and it was not the sound of a nice cut. The finish was as you demonstrated in this video. I was certain I'd scraped side grain spindles with my skew, but it tore out, as well. I must've been thinking of hollowing. Regardless, I'd enjoy learning the principles of why a scrape would tear side grain spindle so much more than, say, the bottom of a bowl.
Thank you for your work.
Very nice great information thanks.
Thank You for sharing a few tip on the skew .
Good stuff! I have a couple of skews but have done very little with them. I need to practice so will try some of these shapes!
Very nice. And some can have different 'point values; later on so arithmetic too.
I make pepper mills the same shape. It's a great way to practice skew technique.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks
You manage your video like you do woodturning. Sometimes you'll get a catch or forget to press record but you always land on your feet and that never avoid you to make a nice skittle/video. Maybe it's because woodturning is a discipline for calm and persistent people too!
I now wonder if you have more catches or forgetting records. ^^
I learnt very early in my demonstration career that having a catch relieves tension in most audiences, so learnt how to catch a skew at will. I've hardly used skew chisels for years so am a bit rusty, as I am with all turning tools, so I have catches and you see them all.
ok thanks
I admit, I had to look up skittles.
love your videos, very hepful. I am trying to lear the skew, what angle do you use thanks
The included angle is about 30 degrees for hardwoods, 25-30 degrees for softwoods.
Hello mr. Raffan A hello from The Netherlands. Which bench grinder do you use? Furthermore, it spins faster than 1800 rotations per minute? Thank you &or your anwer. I am really interrested
I have 200mm and 150mm Abbott and Ashby grinders, both runnning at 2850rpm
Hi Richard, I currently find the skew “a challenge” but will persevere. One question, do you sharpen your skew differently to the gauges, ie is the skew sharper?
I use all turnig tools straight off the 80grit CBN wheel. Have you seen the catch video czcams.com/video/2joWFELkFTI/video.html
Hi Richard, I have watched the “Catch” video but watched it again. I use a Sorby Pro-Edge sharpening system so have no excuse. It just comes down to ‘operator error” I shall keep practicing. Thank you for all your videos, they are a wonderful source of advice and technique.
✋👍
Now you need to turn the balls for us.
I know - I forgot to make the video. That's why I suggested the trowing sticks or oval balls.
What are these?
We have these wonderful things call dictionaries... Skittles as in bowling. Pins might mean more to Americans - that is pins you bowl at to knock over.
What the heck are Skittles? I only know of the American candy.

One concurs wholeheartedly.@@RichardRaffanwoodturning
