Absolutely brilliant performer. I used to watch the show as a kid, and loved it, and it was a staple, it brought the family together. This and Carol Burnett and Doug Henning . To me, Shields and Yarnell and the Carol Burnett show will never have equals.

They contributed to the early Hip Hop Dance culture I wonder if they knew it 🤔I got some of my moves from watching 👀 them

Jimmy Fallon and Andy Cohen brought up your name during a catch-phrase episode I watched.
_When they said Shields and Yarnell a bell clicked in my head and the memories flooded back!_
How did I/we forget you two!?

You're such a treasure, Mr. Shields. I'm no great mime, but you (and the late Ms. Yarnell - my deepest condolences) have informed everything from my life onstage as a singing actress, to my life in front of students as an arts educator.
I once demonstrated to my students that "teachers were human too" by transforming into the very opposite - an "animatronic educator" - before their very eyes. They loved it, and even asked for reprisals. That I could call that up at all - even amateurishly - was because of you.

this robot, marionette performance by Robert Shields was a hoot back in the day!!

Robert inspired many break dancers back in the day.

Chaplin also did some robotics, notably in The Circus (1928). But much cruder than what Mr. Shields can do. But then, robots were much cruder in 1928.

Your ability to pull off that particular illusion is SO convincing that I always wondered if you'd actually changed your ratio of fast-twitch to slow-twitch muscle fibers. I can only imagine the amount of work, study and practice you put in being on par with a concert pianist.
The "Robot" movements are really quite different.
If I reach to pick up a glass I begin the movement slowly but quickly speed up the movement until my hand gets close to the glass. I then slow down as I assess the exact position of my hand relative to the target.
We do these things without even realizing we're doing them through muscle memory, instinct, etc. etc. but you've practiced and practiced replacing those "human" movements.
Your robot seems to begin and end each movement at the same speed, no assessing, just completing each movement as programmed ahead of time.
It just seems like moving so differently for that much time HAS to have an effect on your muscle development.

Your movements in those brief few seconds completely captivated me to learn more about you and your flawless muscle skill and ability.
Do you have your own show that I may not know about - outside of "Shields And Yarnell" that you would recommend that I may see more of your ability ?

I loved watching you and your ex-wife on TV as a kid in the seventies. I was reminded of you guys after learning that Lorene did the body work of the robot, Dot Matrix in Mel Brooks' 1987 Movie Spaceballs, which is available on CZcams to watch with ads here: czcams.com/video/LnG7LdAsbnw/video.html

Fascinating hearing the explanation/demonstration; Michael Jackson sure ‘borrowed’ every single aspect, not only the moves but the eye makeup, the combed back hair, the…. marching band (?) style of outfit… what was your influence choices on those costumes?

pop-n-taco who was in the brakedance film 'Brakin' (1984) said he used to watch Robert Shields. Pop-n-taco later became MJ's offical dance choreographer for 16 years, so we can see the link& lineage.
